1. How would you explain Data Science to a layperson?
In a nutshell, Data Science is about making meaning out of numbers.
Using advanced analytics methods to examine large data sets, a data analyst would extract information to help businesses of all types make decisions, improve their costs, operate efficiently, market the right audiences and much more.
2. How does Data Science differ from Computer Science?
A computer scientist learns the technical skills required for a job in programming. They spend time learning different programming languages and on varying modalities. They are learning the skill of programming.
A data scientist uses the computer as a tool to analyze data. So, embedded in the curriculum is the programming piece, but you will be doing it in a language which is used in data science. As data analysts, we learn the skill of using the computer as a tool to answer our questions.
3. What traits or qualities does an ideal Data Scientist possess which are essential for success in the field?
Intellectual curiosity, someone with enough skepticism to question norms, and someone who has good intuition. You also have to be a good listener so that you can really hear the question being asked, as well as a good storyteller who knows how to present their insights to others, especially to those who have no technical knowledge.
4. What is the earning potential?
Starting salary is about 90K and there is incredible growth from there as you become more experienced in both your knowledge about the business /domain and as you gain real world experience.
