Several people asked if I could make a chart for flights to/from the Middle East to show the price increases that will occur there for awards booked as of 03/22/16.
There’s lot of pain in this chart as well. Without a doubt the Etihad partnership is responsible for some of the jumps in business and first class award rates. Sweet spots like business and first class to Australia have jumped as much as 77% under the new chart. Etihad First Class from the US to the Maldives climbs from 90K to 115K. Etihad has good availability in their A380 First Class Apartments from London to Abu Dhabi and that award climbs 56% from 40K to 62.5K. Still a relative bargain, but a big increase over the current chart.
There are a couple bright spots, namely coach awards to the Western Hemisphere. But overall, this is pretty ugly as well.
Between the Middle East and: | Class of Service | Current Rate | New Rate |
---|---|---|---|

So basically for coach flying to israel the chart actually looks better.
It appears that flights between NY and Tel Aviv in coach class service will be charged less points.
I guess it could’ve been worse.
Sort of true.
Currently you can book travel USA-TLV for 40K between October and May by connecting in Europe and you can even get a free stopover in Europe in each direction.
Under the new chart you can do that year-round, but no free stopover.
@Dan:
Which airline partner is this with? 40/45
Fuel surcharges?
@Mendel:
Any partner, there are several options. AA, Air Berlin, Finnair, Iberia, RJ, etc. Can mix and match for the Us-Europe and Europe-TLV flight.
Currently it’s 20K US-Europe from October-May and 20K Europe-Middle East, so you can stopover in Europe for as long as you want for free in both directions.
No fuel surcharge as long as you avoid BA.
Surprised that M.E.-Asia in F is still so cheap
@Dan:
Thank you!
For children ages 4-9, is it worth using mileage or paying reduced fare? What ages is reduced? What is the typical fare?
@EJB:
Don’t give em any ideas 😉
@Mendel:
Depends on the fare and the airline.
How does the “child-fare” work by the cheapest of the partners?
I heard that American Airlines is cancelling round trips from the U.S. to Israel. Any truth in. this?
Looked at the new chart on AA for redemption after March 22, 2016, couldn’t find the middle east.
Dan, Do you think AA may join up with El Al again now that they don’t fly to Israel? The whole reason they stopped was bc of the US Air flight from PHL to TLV now that it no longer exists it seems to me it would be good for AA to offer that AA would get whatever benefit they had during the partnership (which I presume is keeping the people who fly to Israel in the AA system – otherwise they’d run to United/Delta). Obviously it would for sure be good for El Al so I think it might be a possibility. For people who just wanted to use miles to fly from US to Israel the partnership was amazing (great award availability on El Al and no fuel surcharges).
What do you think Dan?
Look at the prices from Middle East to South Pacific!!!!!
Otherwise, still happy to see flights to Asia are better than any other airline. Hopefully CX will start direct service to HKG this year.
@Dan’s the Man: Nope – LY made their bet with B6 and AA couldn’t care less about servicing TLV — they have made that clear by being the only airline to kill their US-TLV flight….not once, but twice
@Anonymous: What is B6? Also AA wouldn’t be servicing TLV by having an award partnership with El Al. They would have the same partnership with them that had before they merged with US Air. They didn’t end that partnership because of financial resaons. They ended it b/c they would be flying to TLV on their own. Since they are no longer flying on their own the partnership now makes the same sense it did prior to the merger with US Air.
@Anonymous: Oh I see B6 is Jetblue. The only reason El Al did the partnership with JetBlue was because AA canceled their partnership with them. The partnership they have with JetBlue is only codeshare flights (so El AL can sell a ticket TLV to Chicago by combining a TLV to JFK flight with a JetBlue flight from JFK to Chicago). The partnership is not an award partnership that El Al had with AA. I believe Dan previously said El Al could dump JetBlue whenever they want so I don’t think that is an issue.
what is better, using an airline that you dont use(united) for a cheaper fare (save about 150 per ticket x 4) or use the more expensive airline where you have a chance to aggregate miles for family (jetblue)
@mitch: $150 X 4? Take the cheaper ticket man!!
Iberia from Madrid to TLV has a fuel charge when ising AA mile.
@stu:
It’s very minimal.
@Dan’s the Man: Not sure that American will want to leave themselves open to complaints and lawsuits stemming from interrupted movies and arguments over men sitting next to women on El Al flights.
