Through 01/25 the Blue for Business® Credit Card from American Express is offering 10K Membership Rewards points for spending $1 and an additional 10K points for spending $5,000 within 6 months.

That’s double the normal signup bonus.

The card has no annual fee. Additional cardholders are free as well and they qualify for AMEX Offers like Shop Small In November.

But the most surprising feature for a card with no annual fee is that you get a 30% annual point bonus based on your purchases during each cardmembership year that will post within 30 days of each card anniversary.

That’s an effective 1.3 points per dollar spent everywhere, which is excellent for a card with no annual fee.

But there is a catch. The card can’t transfer points into airline miles or hotel points unless you have another card such as:
The Amex EveryDay Credit Card from American Express
The Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card from American Express
American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card
Platinum Card® from American Express
Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN

But the Blue for Business card combined with the Everyday card is a very compelling combo. Neither card has an annual fee and by having the Everyday card the points from both cards will be transferable to airline miles.

The Everyday card requires 20 transactions per month to earn an effective 1.2 points per dollar, so there’s no reason to use that card over the Blue card for everyday purchases which earns 1.3 points per dollar regardless of how many transactions you make per month. But it will still make sense to use the Everyday card for double points on groceries. Both cards earn double points on Uber.

If you spend enough it will make sense to pay the $95 annual fee for the Everyday Preferred card which gives between 1.5-4.5 points per dollar if you make 30 transactions per month. But if you don’t spend enough or just want to avoid annual fees, the Blue for Business+Everyday card combo is a powerful one.

With the Blue for Business card you will get Membership Rewards points AND automatic cash back on purchases from select retailers with Open Savings.  That means an additional 5% off at HP, Hertz, Hyatt, Barnes & Noble online, and Fedex, though the Hyatt benefit ends 12/31.

Getting a business card is simple. If Joe Smith sells items on Ebay or on Amazon, or has any other side business/hobby and wants a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures he can just open a business credit card for “Joe Smith Sole Proprietorship” as the business name. Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field as well as in the social security number field.

A perk of business card spending is that it doesn’t count against your credit utilization. On a personal card you should pay off your spending before the statement is even printed so that you don’t cost yourself points on your credit score. On a business card that’s not necessary and the spending isn’t reported as long as you pay your bills.

It’s also worth remembering that the credit line (and utilization) of business cards are not reported on your personal credit report, thus closing them also won’t effect your score.

Is the 30% bonus new? Or do existing cardholders get that as well?

Abka

Dan, is there a reason why I should or not apply for the Blue now, if I have a code for 75K on an AMEX Gold. Can a 3BM for EveryDay, Blue and Gold mess things up?

Ari

Momofboys

I’ve been doing all my bus spending on spg (1.25) and united club (1.5). Am I better off with the preferred for the 1.5 over spg? I charge over 200k on each card annually

“Additional cardholders are free as well and they qualify for AMEX Offers like Shop Small In November.”

I thought for the most part NEW business cards are not getting the offer?

Dan

@Anonymous:
It was an example, but many people had luck with the links I posted.

@Dan:

even for cards opened up in the last three months?

Steve

Dan. Does the jet blue a/e count as the other card

sam

@dan i dont see anywhere on the website saying that you get another 10,000 points for $5000 in 6 months.

Josh

Dan, apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I couldn’t find it anywhere. If I’m swiping my PRG for airline incidentals on Dec 31st (posting Jan 1) would it count towards the 2015 or 2016 credit? Thanks!
