Currently there are tickets from Philadelphia to Tel Aviv for $622 and from NYC to Tel Aviv for $874.

A $250 savings per passenger is enough for many NYC people to make the drive to PHL, but you can manufacture a ticket from NYC for as low as $768 on Delta and United.

Bookable on Priceline. Priceline tickets from the USA are refundable until 11:29pm ET the day after purchase.
And Bookable on Orbitz. Orbitz tickets from the USA are refundable until 11pm ET the day after purchase.

Delta and United have $660 fares from Philadelphia to Tel Aviv via JFK and Newark respectively.

If you book a multi-destination trip going from JFK or EWR to Tel Aviv and then returning from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia you will split the different between the fares of both cities.  Which in this case means you’ll pay $768, $778, or $783 instead of $874.  Just use the multi-city fare search.

Although your bag will be tagged to Philadelphia all bags will be picked up in NYC. Federal law requires that you bring your bags past customs yourself and can recheck your bags to Philadelphia, though nobody will force you to recheck them.

You’ll want to try multi-destination with both Priceline and Orbitz as the results will vary with this kind of search.

United also codeshares with Amtrak for departures from ZFV. ZFV is an airport code that Orbitz will recognize, but it’s not an airport at all. It’s the 30th street train station in downtown Philadelphia.  I’ve written about ZFV a few times before and discuss it in DansDeals seminars.

If you book a ticket from Newark to Tel Aviv and then returning from Tel Aviv to ZFV you would have to pick up your bags, pick up an Amtrak ticket, and then carry your bags onto the train as Amtrak doesn’t even have checked baggage on that route. Again, nobody will force you onto that train…

As far as which dates will work, it’s based on finding cheap fares from NYC to TLV and then from TLV to PHL.

I’ve done the hard work for you and below are most of the dates that this will work for.

Nobody will force you to take the leg in the red box and luggage is picked up by everyone in JFK…

This is called hidden city ticketing, and of course the airlines don’t love that.  And airline reps will probably lie to you and say that your bags will go straight to Philadelphia even though they will not.  They will be tagged to Philadelphia, but everyone has to pick them up in Newark or JFK.

They can decide not to give miles for your trip, though only USAirways has actually followed through with that threat.  I don’t suggest anyone do this every month, but tons of people save money by buying tickets with hidden city ticketing every day without problems.

You can read this post for more on how to utilize hidden city ticketing.

I’m keeping an eye out for NYC-TLV for early July 2016. I know those flights haven’t opened up yet, but will soon. What are the odds these prices will hang around?

What does UA do these days with the Amtrak interline? Before Amtrak went to etickets, there wasn’t a no show problem if you bought your ZFV ticket and never used it (again no baggage checking on the train). Do the ‘check’ that now electronically?

I need a flight from NYC to TLV round trip for the first 2 weeks of this coming august and I can’t afford the current available flights. Are there any deals that I might not have heard of?

Yaakov

If you depart from ZFV and don’t take the train, it sounds like United would know. Is that accurate? Otherwise you could just go round trip with ZFV and pay only the 660 price.

ben

hi,
will i get miles from unietd on this itinerary, at least on the way there?

Anonymous

@Moish: sure. Just fly through Russia or the Ukraine. You’ll save a boatload. Use Google flights and flexible on dates.

Just a Someone

I bought the ZFV – Newark – TLV. “MUST” I travel to Philly to ride the Amtrak to EWR or can I just skip that leg and join the itinerary in EWR onto TLV???
I’m leaving from Brooklyn and really do NOT wish to travel to Philly unnecessarily.

Any of these good deals originating in TLV?

Josh

@Dan, why book 2 flight segments (1 for NYC-TLV and 1 for TLV-NYC-PHL)?

When I try to book 3 segments (NYC-TLV, TLV-JFK, JFK-PHL), the price is still $778 — is there any reason not to do that? I assume then the bags are tagged to JFK, and I never have to worry about miles, etc…?

Is that correct?

simcha

I am not finding anything cheaper than $906 right now… ;/
