It wasn’t a matter of if, just a matter of when.Ā Effective 06/01 Amazon will begin collecting sales tax for shipments to Ohio.

As of today, Amazon collects the sales tax for shipments to 24 states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

No sales tax is collected for orders shipped to the other states, though most states ask that you include the tax on your income tax return as a use tax.

Welcome to the club.

Applies to items marked “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.”
Items that are sold by sellers, even if “Fulfilled by Amazon,” may not have the sales tax collected.

Shucks! Is there a tax exempt option?

States becoming greedy to collect tax šŸ™

As mentioned above, try looking for third party sellers that use fulfilled by Amazon service – their prices are usually either the s for just below amazon’s and most would only collect taxes for shipments to states they are based in or non at all. It is kind of a nightmare to deal with as a seller (I am one) but could potentially save you some $ if you are in the unlucky state.

I have also found that even Amazon’s Warehouse Deal items are often not including tax. Not sure if it is based on the warehouse it is coming from since it is a one off item or what. Lot of good items in their warehouse deals!

Sad day:) All good things do come to the end:)

@CSS:
Don’t get me wrong – I don’t “like” paying taxes of any kind, but it is kind of necessary in a civilized society. Why are you accusing the states of being greedy? This is tax money that is supposed to be paid, whether as a “sales” tax or a “use” tax. The states are just getting more efficient in the collection of said taxes.
Personally, as a small business owner being hurt by the unfair advantage enjoyed by online retailers, I sort of welcome this levelling of the playing field.

Our governments, local, county, state and especially federal waste so much of our hard earned tax dollars they don’t deserve anymore than what they’re already get. Our dollars we earned have already been taxed numerous times before it even reaches our pockets, then gets taxed more as we buy items, pay bills and further help expand the economy which is the real driver of growth. Additional taxation of online sites will not help local retail stores. It just means less money consumers have to buy things with and more drag on the economy which results in less jobs, less income and turns into less tax revenue, more unemployment benefits being paid by less and less actual workers.

“Our governments, local, county, state and especially federal waste so much of our hard earned tax dollars they donĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢t deserve anymore than what theyĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢re already get.” Comment: It is not up to the individual to unilaterally correct what they perceive as mishandling of public funds. The individual can and should endeavor to elect responsible politicians and lawmakers.

“Additional taxation of online sites…” Comment: Collecting sales tax for online purchases is NOT an “additional” tax. Virtually every state that has a sales tax has a corresponding “use” tax, which is owed whether or not the merchant collects it and whether or not the buyer pays it. It is extremely easy to avoid paying this tax and the states just want to make it easier to collect a tax that has been the law for decades.

“… will not help local retail stores… more unemployment benefits… less actual workers” Comment: While the collecting of sales tax for online purchases will not directly benefit the local retail store, the residual effect of leveling the playing field definitely will. More people will now opt to shop local, because they can touch, feel,try on, and evaluate the products before they buy, and then take it home with them the very same day. This will translate to more local workers earning wages and spending those earnings locally. To me that reads MORE purchase at local stores, MORE jobs, and MORE income, without actually raising taxes.
