-United Will Not Honor Danish Kroner Tickets
—————————————————————————————–
I joked on the DansDeals Forums that the Vegas line for the United first class tickets from London to be honored was 9:1.
And now we know it conclusively, the DoT will not be enforcing tickets bought with Danish Kroner:
“On February 11, 2015, a currency exchange-rate error in 3rd party software supplied to United affected several thousand bookings on United’s Denmark-facing website. Specifically, this error temporarily caused flights originating in the United Kingdom and denominated in Danish Kroners (DKK) to be presented at only a fraction of their intended prices. While United filed fares correctly, this software error caused amounts charged to be significantly lower than prices offered through all other distribution channels or available in any other currency.
United promptly voided transactions affected by this exchange rate error, reversed all associated charges and contacted customers directly through email and other methods. Customers should not have any resulting charges related to voided reservations nor should they need to take any proactive steps to seek a refund of charges.
The Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has informed United that it does not intend to pursue enforcement action in this matter. With the agreement of the DOT, this statement replaces the requirement to provide individual responses to those interested in this issue who have corresponded with the DOT or with United.”

How about those shafted by Booking.com, 10 days after Le Parker Meridien offered $60 per night for specific nights? That was NOT promptly dealt with!
As I said…
Work-for-ur-muny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Steven:
Complain to SPG if you want.
But nobody is going to force a hotel to honor a glitch.
@Work-for-ur-muny:
An education helps…
This from the D.o.T. says it all:
“Additionally, the Office is concerned that to obtain the fare, some purchasers had to manipulate the search process on the website in
order to force the conversion error to Danish Krone by misrepresenting their billing address country as Denmark when, in fact, Denmark was not their billing address country.
This evidence of bad faith by the large majority of purchasers contributed to the Enforcement Office’s decision.”
Darn!
Their decision about the flights aside, I’m having a hard time understanding why the DOT can get off with responding to people’s complaints through a statement United makes on their own site. Why are customers required to patrol United’s site for a response to their DOT complaints? Maybe I’m missing something.
As much as I would have loved to get it. Gam Zu Ltova.
@lawboy:
Dot has it posted as well.

I’m on the phone now
trying to get my united 1 way ticket refunded back into my mileage account
the united rep told me they want $200!!! to refund my miles!!!
I’m on hold for a supervisor
Any advise???
@Davidm:
My United Return Flight LAH-JFK FC ticket for $50 was canceled
My United Mileage ticket for JFK LAH to get the issue!
i did not say denmark was my home or billing country when i ordered my tickets
This particular sentence is what makes the difference “This evidence of bad faith by the large majority of purchasers contributed to the Enforcement Office’s decision.â€
I don’t think anybody who owns a business would think otherwise. United could be the worst company in the world but when vyou booked the tickets the best you could have hoped for was a nice gesture. After all it was bad faith.
I just got a stupid rep on the phone
supervisor had a brain saw they canceled my return
they are going to refund my flight there miles back into the account no charge.
that was a close call!!!
What is difference, legally, between a flight with a rate that is lower than expected, purchased in good faith, which the DoT would defend (I understand that they aren’t doing it here) and a hotel with a rate that is lower than expected, purchased in good faith, which “no one will force a hotel to honor a glitch”?
@Davidm:
Good job.
@HDS:
Because the DoT regs for price mistakes only cover airfare.
Wait, so does this mean I won’t be able to keep my ticket?
Someone I know in UK got the ticket as they booked for that day and printed the boarding pass, they honored return trip home too! First class both ways!
@Anonymous:
Yup, same thing happened with 4 mile island. Those that flew that week got it honored.
Tough luck for everyone else.
Danish resident – Danish credit card – Paid in DKK – Didn’t help.
I booked for fun and was more concerned that the tickets might be honored and passengers downgraded. We have travelled United before and will never do it again at least not in Monkey Class 🙂
Someone at the DoT was paid off?
Probably not the first time, probably not the last time…

Big Chilull Hashem thanks alot.
@Paul:
How so?
This was covered on dozens of blogs, sites, and forums.
@Paul: Huh?
@Charlotte: DoT said that they only intend to pursue enforcement action against flights that are marketed to people in the US. Curious to see if this will be the new norm.
@Paul
your comment is way off. the interest to book these fares was so widespread among all ethnic groups
@Dan’s the Man: very deep
Good. To enforce the fares would have been an insult to common sense, which seems to be sorely lacking among some who posted on the original deal. Many people need to drow up. Ever heard of win-lose mentality?
Dan we are heart broken now you find us another
Flight deal
@moishe r:
News outlets reported this as originating on DansDeals. This website is clearly owned and frequented by frum Jews (e.g. “Seminar:Jerusalem”, “Shiurim on Sale” etc..)
I agree with Paul that posting and encouraging things like this is Chilul Hahshem. This is especially true when people complain when the “deal” doesn’t work out. “Oh man, my taking advantage of someone’s mistake didn’t work!” Or how about rationalizing it’s OK because it’s revenge for corporate greed. Cmon…
Just because other outlets are reporting it, doesn’t justify you posting something that is clearly manipulating a business
If anyone starts a class action on this, let the rest of us know. I’m not surprise about the useless DoT’s inaction.
@TG:
Class Action!?!? I can see it now-
“Your Honor, it’s despicable how the US government doesn’t protect the fine citizens of this country who were simply trying to take advantage of a large evil corporation’s mistake. Taking advantage of a person’s weakness is what this country is all about.”
I think shareholders of UAL should file a class action suit against you for wire-fraud for falsifying information to manipulate an honest error.
Per FlyerTalk:
Not that I am surprised at all to hear this but I can confirm per an insider with United the PR strategy for this situation was/is to manipulate the blogs and other forms of social media to believing those ticketed were wrong in doing so. FT and other higher traffic blogs where the highest percentage of discussion regarding this topic have been assigned to “teams” for mediation (and manipulation) of discussion. Their thoughts are to convince this population that the general public thinks what they did was wrong and hoping they will follow like sheep to join the rest of the herd.
DoT is right but I am sure most of us wouldn’t be affected since to lie about where we live would be a massive chilul Hashem.
This was not a deal it was a mistake.
The right decision was made.
The tax on such a ticket is 100’s
Cannot understand how people are really going crazy about this mistake. As someone stated anyone who is in business would understand.
So Dan would you honour a mistake on your site if a price error was made ? Say 200 new imacs for $50 ….I don’t think so.
I know this is old news at this point but need some advice… Husband and I booked one way London-Newark in business class during the glitch. After we saw our reservation was canceled we tried our luck speaking to a United Rep who ended up reinstating the ticket somehow (she seemed to be totally unaware of any glitch). As of now we’re are still showing ticketed and confirmed on the United website and were even able to select our seats. We are hesitant to book the rest of our trip around this flight since we’re nervous that once we get to the airport they will cancel somehow. Any advice as to how to proceed with this?
