To book these awards just call AA’s AAdvantage desk at 800-882-8880 and reference the following award code:
7,500 miles off Coach: TB8X7A
7,500 miles off Business/First: UB21X2A

You may be able to avoid the $20 phone booking charge by first placing a reservation on hold at aa.com and then calling up AAdvantage to have them reduce the cost of the award by 7,500 miles and ask for the fee to waived since it was originally booked on their website.

I called and it does work for the US48 only.

There are no direct flights from NYC to the locations in CA.

It should work on stops, but it is true that AA + codeshare partners don’t fly non-stop from JFK/LGA/EWR to SNA/SBA.

I should add that it takes much less time to get out of these small CA airports, perhaps 30 minutes less than at LAX. It is not always worth the extra drive, depending on your location and traffic. Another quick note is that if you are at JFK/EWR and have a courteous agent, if the non-stop to LAX is empty the agent may place you on that flight. You will have to be super nice… YMMV but they are known to do this, at their full discretion.
