also available from Lowes for $179 after 10% off coupon which is easily attainable!
Did anyone check with a competent authority (that knows Halacha and understands technology) if this is permissible from a Shabbos observance perspective?
@Alan:
Where can you get a 10% coupon having trubble getting one
The Nest would not be good for yom tov. For example if Shavuos is very hot and you need your AC on. If it’s a weekday when you’re normally not home it will not turn it on (or at least not cool down enough). There is an overide for when you’re home at a time when you’re not usually home but you can’t use the overide on Shabbos/Yom Tov. I would not get this for a frum house.
I did ask my Rabbi and he said with “auto-away†and the “screen on upon approach†features turned off it is permissible. I disagree with the poster regarding YT being an issue because the auto away feature is always off and therefor it does not know your schedule.
After having 2 of these thermostats for over a year I do like them but mainly because of the wifi, aesthetics and ease of use but we cant use the main auto away feature. The main annoyance is that on Shabbos and YT you cannot see the screen which can be very frustrating at times as you are not sure what the system is set at to be sure that it is operating properly.

and scroll down to the back issues. The one at the bottom is the current issue. It focuses upon Google and their various “questionable” projects underway. One of them has to do with their purchase of Nest (nest.com) for a few billion (yes, B) dollars as part of their entry into the IoT* You’d be surprised how much information they are collecting from those doodads. (They can tell you how many people are in the house/room). Fascinating read. Europe is looking to try & break Google into smaller pieces before Google can get too powerful.
