Update: DEAD!

-Starwood AMEX Consumer Linky
New AMEX Consumer Terms: “This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

-Starwood AMEX Business Linky
AMEX Business Terms: “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product within the last 12 months.”

This offer expires 06/30.

With this offer you will get 10,000 bonus points for spending $1 and 20,000 bonus points for spending $5,000 within 6 months. So spend $5,000 within 6 months and you’ll have 35,000 Starwood points.
The $65 annual fee is waived for the first year.

Key benefits:
-The card doesn’t have bonus spending categories except in SPG hotels, but you get a 25% bonus when you transfer points into miles. Note that SPG point transfers can take from 2 days to 2 weeks to complete.
-Starwood has gutted the cash and points program, but the regular hotel redemption rate can still be a bargain in some hotels. Starwood charges insane amounts of points at their high end hotels though. While the Park Hyatt Maldives is 25,000 Hyatt/Chase points or 12,500 points+$150 per night, the W Maldives would run at least 90,000 Starpoints per night. Room rates at either resort are more than $1,000 per night.
-AMEX benefits like return protection, warranty protection, etc.
-Promotions like Twitter savings and Small Business Saturday that work on primary and secondary cards.
-The business card gets open savings cash rebates.
-Just by having a Starwood card you earn Preferred Plus status. This status earns you the right to checkout at 4pm at Starwood hotels.
-If you spend $30,000 in a year on either Starwood card you earn SPG Gold status.
-Cardholders get 2 elite qualifying stays and 5 elite qualifying nights towards earning Gold or Platinum status.

I got this card with in the last 3 months is there any way that I could get this promotion?

Moshe

What are the best other cards to 3bm this with?

Happy Thanksgiving

Dan, I never had the biz card. Can I submit a 4BM with 4 apps of SPG Biz apps?

Nate

What benefits does spending 30k and getting gold status? What does gold status get you?

Ari

Didn’t know about the Preferred Plus status, and 4pm checkout.
Where is that listed? I don’t see it in the benefit terms for the card.

Yanki

If I use a new business name as self proprietary with my social do I qualify for the bonus ?

Dave

I received this message any number to call and get a decision right away ?

moshe

@mendy: I’d like to know this too

moish

so you get 10,000 for spending 1$ and 20,000 for spending 5,000$. So how does that equal 35,000? Isn’t that 30,000?

Dan

@mendy:
AMEX won’t match offers. But you can always ask and they may do a goodwill adjustment. YMMV.

@Moshe:
Depends what you have had.

@Happy Thanksgiving:
Unlikely to get 4 approvals, but you can try.

@Nate:
A 250 point rebate on all stays or free WiFi. And maybe an upgrade to a better room.

@Ari:
Unpublished benefit.
Your SPG.com status will change to preferred plus once you start earning points on the card.

@Yanki:
No, that doesn’t work with AMEX, only other banks.

@Dave:

@moish:
5,000 base spend points at 1 point per dollar plus the 30K bonus-35K.

mas

@moish …. the 5000 points come from the $5000 you spent to get the 30k 🙂

J

@moish

You get a dollar per point spent also

dovi

@moish you will get 5,000 points for spending the 5,000 thats 35,000

anonymous

It’s this still the best card to get from amex even though they charge high amounts for their high end hotels, and gutted their cash and points program?

Dan

@anonymous:
Still one of the best from AMEX though other cards like Barclay Arrival and several cards from Chase have leapfrogged the Starwood card for spending.

A few years ago this card was the best by far. That’s no longer the case as competition has heated up.

cards

@Dan. Does having too many cards ruin a credit score. Also does canceling credit cards ruin credit score. I am someone who pays on time no e hb”h
No debt b”h

Avi

I didn’t had none of this spg cards
Can I apply now and will get for both
Personal and business ?

Moshe

I only have chase cards so it’s my first dip into Amex.. Which 3 would you go for. Thanks

CS

If I’m a card holder and I apply under my name can I still get the welcome bonus offer?

Dan

@CS:
Probably not, YMMV.

Nobiggy

I got Amex to add 5k SPG points to my account. Both buisness and consumer. 😄😃😀

Dan

@Nobiggy:
Congrats!

Eric

@Dan, do you know if opening credit cards affects getting a mortgage? I am about to move.

You’ve said before about the chase ink cards that they do not affect your personal credit. Is it true for this Amex too? (again, related to getting a mortgage.)

BTW, I am addicted to your site. TY!!!!

Returns

Can you tell me how AMEX returns work. The agents I’ve spoken to were not helpful

samuel

I opend this card 2 weeks ago, I called now and said I must have used a wrong link cuz my offer only gave me 25 and now I see that its 30k they gave me another 5k which will process 7-10 B days,
Also did anyone confirm that ones you had an amex in the past you can not have the bonus again? Or its just in the terms but it srill works?

Anonymous

How long ago did they stop with cash & points? Any reports of ppl getting bonus offers with Amex even though they had cards in past

Mendele

@Dan
Gut Voch!
I don’t have any Business cards with Amex..
I see you posted in the comments here three cards to do a 3bm, with one of them being a personal card.
I always thought personal and business are two different pulls?

Yitzhak

About a month ago, it was posted that you’ll only be able to earn a signup bonus from an American Express card if you have never had it in the past.

I had both Starwood cards (business and consumer) back in 2012, the first time the 30,000 point sign-up offer was made.

Do you think I have shot to get a second sign-up bonus with this offer?

Eli

Do u need a tax id for the biz card? Or can I put my ssn and “sole Proprietor” like the Chase inks?
And if I have the consumer card, will I still get the bonus on the biz card?
Thnx

Eli

@Yitzhak: not the personal. U cnt get the bonus if u have ever had it in ur life. That new rule went into affect 5/1/14

E. D.

What’s the bonus on the gold right now?

martin

I have starwood personal will it still work if i apply for business ???

mendy

@Nobiggy: how did you do that?

Yossi

Can I get both of the cards under the same SPG account? Will I get 10 qualifying nights or just 5?

david

amex hade an offer for spg 40,000 Starwood Starpoints Signup Bonus On The spg AMEX Cards at 09/13 does anyone have a screenshot from that please email me

thanks in advance !

Dan

@Eric:
Applying for any card will cause a credit pull that can cost you a few points.

If you’re right on the edge of where you need to be for an optimal interest rate and you are applying for a mortgage within a few months you may want to hold off.

However they will probably just ask why you needed the credit and they are fine with the explanation that you do it for the points.

@Returns: http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/33964

@Mendele:
Incorrect.

@Yitzhak:
That rule was only for consumer cards.
I havent read any reports either way since the new rules started may 1st.

@Eli:
No.
Yes.
Yes.

@E. D.:
25K

@martin:
Yes.

@Yossi:
10

@david:
30K is the biggest bonus they ever offer.

CtownBin

@Dan:
You say that the Barclay Arrival has leapfrogged the Starwood for spending, implying that the Arrival is now the best general-spend card out there, to be used whenever there is no category bonus to be had. However, what about the new AmEx Everyday Preferred card? This card effectively offers 1.5 MR points per dollar spent (it is trivial to hit 30 transactions a month for many of us), which means as long as you value MR points at 1.5 cents each- which seems reasonable if not conservative- this will beat out the Arrival. I’m curious why you haven’t mentioned it?

Dan

@CtownBin:
I didn’t say Arrival leapfrogged Starwood for spending. I said if you only want round-trip coach tickets bought in advance then that card can make the most sense.

If you can earn 5 points per dollar on Freedom/Ink no card will beat that.

Everyday Preferred is a good card if you like AMEX MR points. But AMEX MR is weaker than Starpoints and Chase points for most people’s usage patterns. The main achilles heal is a very weak signup bonus.

Richard H

I got this card a long time ago and canceled when they raised the annual fee maybe some 15 years ago. Do you think that their records will check back that far to determine if I have had the card before and not qualify for the bonus?

Anonymous

@Dan: As for Starwood being better than MR points- this could very well be true, but if it is, I might be missing something. Many of the transfer partners are the same, and with MR they are instant and you don’t need to worry about transferring in blocks of 20k. The only valuable partners that Starwood transfers to that MR doesn’t is AA/US, and I am bleeding those points right now thanks to multiple Citi 100k and don’t think I will be transferring to them for a long, long time- and I think many are in the same boat. Are there any other worthwhile Starwood transfer partners that are NOT partners with MR?

Dan

@Richard H:
YMMV.

@Anonymous:
AMEX MR doesn’t have AA, Alaska, JAL, Lufthansa, etc that SPG has.

Miles

So if I have the business spg but not the personal I can apply using my current SPG # in the application for the consumer card and

Miles

So if I have the business SPG but not the personal SPG I can apply with my current SPG # in the application for the consumer card or should I leave that portion blank and then combine the accounts?

Pepe

I tried a 3 BM during last month’s Chase Ink promotion for Plus, Bold, and Cash. I was only approved for Bold, and from my conversation with recon, it sounds like there may have been two credit pulls. Can I apply for the SPG AmEx or better not so soon after my recent Chase application?

help

I applied this afternoon for personal starwood. my confirm email said 25,000 points, not 30,000. I have HUCA’d 3 times. Several hours of this later, not budging, but amex sending to investigate problem . They will decide in 6-8 weeks. They told me not to cancel today’s application and apply new, as they will not honor it.

dsh

@nobiggy would love to hear how you did it. have consumer and business. got tuned down by chat reps

josh

How often can I sign up for this and get the sign up bonus?

Rivka

Will I have a problem signing up with a 2BM for both the SPG consumer and business at the same time if I recently had credit card fraud since the credit unions will flag any new attempt at opening a credit card now?

Rivka

I just tried to sign up and the link says the deal is expired, even though it’s 6/30 today.

Chaim

@Rivka: I also couldn’t get through today. Should I apply for a redulat Starwood card, and then complain about this?

el

I know i missed the 30k signup, but I want to sign up at the current 25k. I used to have the SPG AMEX card but cancelled it a while ago. a few questions: #1 will they let me sign up again? #2 is there a certain amount of time i need to wait before signing up again? #3 do I give my current SPG account number when signing up? Thanks!

michael

is it worth it to pay the $65 annual fee for the SPG or better to downgrade if i am someone who usually sells points?
