The cost of Amazon Prime will go up from $79 to $99 on March 20th for new enrollees. Amazon had said previously to stockholders that they would hike it to as much as $119, which I said at the time would be a real stretch to pull off. Luckily that didn’t happen.
The student rate will go up from $39 to $49.
Amazon will seemingly still allow you to share Amazon Prime between 5 relatives even at different addresses. Amazon Student can’t be shared.
You can lock in the $39 student/$79 rate for your first year by starting a:
-Free Prime Trial
–Free Prime Trial for Amazon Mom
-Free Prime Trial for Amazon Student.
For existing members the new rate will go into effect on April 17th. If your renewal is after that point you’ll be paying the new $49 student/$99 rate. Some people have been emailed that they will be able to renew one last time later in 2014 at the lower rate, so there’s some confusion there still.
Prime members get:
-FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items
-No minimum order size
-Unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Video
-Read free books each month through Kindle First and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
Will you be renewing for $99 instead of $79 later this year? Hit the comments!

I got this email:
We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Student Prime membership will be increasing in 2015. After your free trial, your membership will be the original price of $39 for your first year of Prime. On August 12, 2015, your membership will renew at $49/year.
Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
For more information about your Prime membership, visit our Prime membership page.
Sincerely,
The Amazon Prime Team

I got one additional year of student for $39
Nope. Its too much!!
Not that I can blame them… but ill pass.
Amazon prime trial works perfectly for me! First was my info. then my husband’s, mother, sister…. As long as they still offer 1 month trial, i’m good!
No way am I continuing..
@$49 still an amazing price.. maybe people should go back to school 🙂
I am currently in a trial, but the email I received says I will be able to renew at the lower rate when the trial is over.
I will renew my membership in September
Anyone read about the lawsuit concerning amazon prime?

I keep finding that the cheaper items don’t qualify for Prime free shipping anyway…unless it’s an “add-on” item. That’s been a killer for me.
Sharing (with the acknowledged limitations) makes more sense than ever.
I share it with my sister’s family and my mom. It’ll work out to $33 each for a year of free 2 day shipping. I think even at the $120 I would have renewed. Its still well worth the price
I like Amazon Prime, but I’ve never been willing to pay the $79 for it — so I guess I won’t be paying $99 for it, either. I’ve always taken advantage of the free trials. The problem is that I don’t make more than a dozen Amazon purchases a year that don’t otherwise qualify for free shipping. So my net result is that I’d pay about $7 in shipping for each Prime “free shipping” order. It’s the same reason I don’t buy “memberships” in the warehouse stores.
I’m in with a group from DDF. I’m happy to stay in at the higher price (divided by 5). We recently got guinea pigs, and ordering the food, bedding, etc. through Amazon is cheaper, and not as inconvenient as going to the pet store each time.
With the sharing between 5 people, do all of them get free movies ?
It all depends on how much you use the free 2 day shipping/ instant video. I use it pretty often to deliver anything and everything with free 2 day shipping so to go back to standard shipping rates wouldn’t make sense for the $20 bump.
Why wouldn’t I continue? It’s a service I use and enjoy…
I will be renewing in May. What is $4 more per year for me and each of my 4 family members I split with.
Was thinking of cancelling then signing up again to lock in another year, but not worth the hassle to have to reinvite everyone, prorated refunds, no Ty.
Wow, danka G-t I just renewed my membership yesterday.
Between the membership and price of pampers going up subscribe and save is only 20% now (there are many times that it’s cheaper in the store) I think I’m back at Costco…
@joe, only the primary member gets free video and amazon mom.
@Joe: No. Only the main account.
I am still a student, and my membership will be going up to $49/year. I order enough throughout the year for even the full membership rate to still make sense.
Just thought everyone would like to know what’s really going on with this Amazon Membership stuff. So next time some fool wants to debate Dans integrity and honesty on his website look at who the culprits truly are. Its all a game and sometimes the consumer gets to play it a bit better.

Here I share my Amazon Prime free membership trick!
It happened ones and simce then I tried it for another year and it worked…
I suscribed to Prime, then I called to change the CC charge to my Amex Blue Cash because. They give free Prime. they told me its fine, they’ll refund that card but still give me the prime for a year. This year 2 weeks ago I did the same and it worked for another year!…
Another good trick is Amex Blue Cash gives you one year free. After that year you can change the card for a different no anual fee card with 1 year free prime. After that year you can change back to the blue cash with a free year of prime :-)!
This should work fine + when you change cards no credit pull and no difference in credit hidtory cuz card numbers are the same! Good luck. And a easy fast!
is amazon prime free with most amex cards? I have an old amex blue cash card, will they automatically refund me the fee? also have a new platinum card, wonder if it will work on that too. Will it work for a student fee also?
@hdawg
Amex Blue Cash should give one year free prime when you pay for Prime with that card this should. Work also for old cards. You can call Amex to double check. Platinum also gives one year Free Prime.
“Work also for old cards”. I just called, Amex CSR said no one year free prime and can’t add it on for me.
I won’t even pay the student rate for Prime.
