Southwest famously gives 2 free checked bags and free changes on all fares with non-expiring flight credits, though the airline will soon begin to act more like traditional carriers.

Some fees do fly on Southwest and for the 2nd year in a row, they have gone up:

  • Last year, excess bags over 2 went up from $75 to $125. Those are now $150.
  • Last year, bags from 51-70 pounds went up from $75 to $100. Those are now $150.
  • Last year, bags from 71-100 pounds went up from $75 to $125. Those are now $200.
  • Last year, bags from 63″-80″ went up from $75 to $125. Those are now $200.

I guess that’s one way to squeeze out a little more revenue. Do these changes affect you?

While southwest is ahead of the pack with free bags, their bicycle policy is more punitive and costly than even Spirit. $75 to check a bike even if weight and dimensions are under 50lb.
