SpaceX Starlink in-flight WiFi is a real game changer.

I used free Starlink on a JSX flight from Burbank to Oakland a year ago. The speeds were awesome and the ping lagtime was orders of magnitude better than other in-flight WiFi offerings:

2 weeks ago, United announced they would offer free Starlink fleetwide, with installation starting next year.

Here is some more fascinating background information on United’s decision to go with Starlink, despite being aware of Elon Musk poking fun at United CEO Scott Kirby.

Hawaiian Airlines announced they have completed Starlink installation on its entire Airbus fleet, for free and fast WiFi worldwide on their 24 A330 widebodies.

Hawaiian will also install Starlink on its flagship Boeing 787-9 fleet, but does not plan to add Starlink on its Boeing 717 aircraft, which is used exclusively on short interisland flights.

And Air France announced today that it will also adopt Starlink fleetwide, starting next year. It will also be free of charge, but only if you’re registered for a free Flying Blue account. Members will be able to connect all of their devices, free of charge.

Other airlines with Starlink or Starlinks plans include Qatar, Zipair, airBaltic, and JSX.

I can’t wait to have proper internet in the skies on more airlines.

Starlink adoptions will likely continue to accelerate, similar to how all North American electric cars quickly coalesced over the past year around adopting Tesla’s superior electric charging standard. Those that wait longer will have to wait more time for parts to become available.

In the near future, airlines that don’t have Starlink will find themselves at a massive competitive disadvantage indeed.

Flying for work has been one of the few excuses people have to not be connected, it’s a great improvement, but drops out one more place where you can be radio silent with an excuse.

I say this seriously- I sure hope it’s filtered.
