Joso

is this a great deal for everyday use? better deals tonight or tomorrow?

Dan

@Joso:
This is excellent for everyday use and a fantastic price for a powerful Core i5 processor.

Grab it while you can and if something even better comes up you can always return it. Though I doubt we’ll see Core i5s for anything less than this.

Sam

Webpage not working. Im on mac

Dan

@Sam:
Working fine on my PC 😀

Joso

@Dan
Thanks, ordered 1.

Shlomo

And if you have problems ordering try the mobile site it seems to be working faster

Shlomo

There is no optical drive

Dan

@Shlomo:
Most laptops don’t anymore.
Can always buy an external USB optical drive for cheap:

yitzy

Thanks Dan got 1 for my grandmother.

Eliezer

Hi Dan, I got the core i3 from staples for $260, should i buy this and return i3 to staples? which is a better deal.

Ring

So this doesn’t have a DVD drive?

Cool

Does this have a DVD player?

Naphtali

@Sam: its the microsoft website soo Competition lol

Dan

@Cool:
Read comment 8.

eva

If I use a regular AMEX card will I get the second year waranty?

Dan

@eva:
What’s a regular AMEX card?

Yyb

Thanks dan. I got the toshiba from staples, for everyday use is this a better deal or arich with the other?

Jason Smith

It does not have a DVD drive, but as Dan pointed out you can buy an external one for $30. However, it may be a pain to carry around a portable drive with you.

Also, be wary that some of the Gateway laptops do not have a wired Ethernet port.

Gateway is the lowest of laptop manufacturers (I believe they are now owned by Acer), they are very cheap with their parts so just be aware of that.

I would also disagree slightly with Dan, while there are some laptops that do not have an optical drive, I would by no way say MOST. In fact, I can hardly ever remember seeing a Dell that does not have an optical drive – maybe the real small 11″ ones, but the full size ones almost always have one. I am a computer reseller, usually the only ones without the optical drive are the real small 11″ ones, the chromebooks, and most of the hP sleekbooks – but pretty much all other models have one.

hey

whats the total after tax?

Jason Smith

Ok, the specs on this one do say it has an Ethernet port, only other thing I would comment on is the 4 cell battery which they claim gets 4 hours, the last Gateway I owned got significantly less than that. If not having an optical drive and a small battery are not concerns to you, then I would say jump on this.

yudig

great find! just got my claim approved by amex for bad laptop i had purchased that didnt work and now have this one to replace it.

abc

358 with tax in ny

Eliezer

Dan, please respond to my question (and also yyb) if this is better than the staples deal a few days ago.

Joe

Total 356.55 in ny

tzvi

Dan, as usual thanks for a gr8 post. I had the same question as Eliezer and yyb, can you please advise which deal we should go with, as I purchased the toshiba a few days ago from staples.Thanks

Dan

@tzvi:
Core i5 is better than Core i3.
Really depends on whether you’re willing to pay for the extra speed.

As an

As an IT person I advise Tzvi to keep the toshiba as it is much better quality construction and component-wise

Eliezer

@Dan: Thanx. It is only $70 for the extra speed but the toshiba has a built in dvd drive, so if you need that, its much more convenient than having an external drive. Keep the deals coming Dan !! 🙂

hi

Is the touchscreen worth any extra $ over the toshiba?

Also worth noting that it seems microsoft offer free return shipping

Dan

@hi:
Yes, Windows 8 is significantly better with a touchscreen.

Sara

Question for the computer experts:
I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 & Toshiba Satelite On sale for $300 a piece (Original $500). Both have i3 processors & the same specs.
Which company is better overall – Dell or Toshiba?
Thanks

mordy

@Sara: dell by far, better manufacturing and better customer service

Isaac

@Joso:

Its $30 cheaper on staples

Dan

@Isaac:
Link?

dd

is this a good laptop? works well? comparison to which other laptops?

sam

@Isaac:
That’s for an Intel Pentium Processor 2117U 1.8GHz 2MB L3 cache
http://www.staples.com/Gateway-NV570P09u-156-Touch-Screen-Laptop/product_275656

Dan

@sam:
That’s a significantly slower processor.

sam

@Dan
Exactly my point. I already purchased the i5 from microsoft. Thanks for the tip. I was debating about buying when $399, but was turned off because of the lack of DVD drive. But for $329, I’ll make due with an external. Thanks for the tip.

Jason Smith

If you want to buy a really good laptop that will last you for years, then OfficeMax has the Dell i15RMT-10001sLV a 4th generation core i7 touchscreen with 8GB of RAM for $699.99. If you use an Amex business card on the OPEN program, you automatically get 10% back, bringing it to $630 + tax. Again, this is a much more expensive laptop but it is a top of the line and from one of the top companies.

DH

Actually Jason – couple of notes for you.

1. Gateway is indeed a lower level machine but the truth is most laptops depend more on the actual machine than the manufacturer. HP had about 50 different laptops that all failed after a year or so (most of the HP DV6 and DV9 Series) and Dell as well (Dell Studio hi-end Laptops all cracked at the hinges after a few months)
2. Many of the new Dell and HP laptops are shipping without optical drives, the new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series which is the higher end line of Dell Laptops are all with no Optical drives (http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-7537/pd?oc=fncwb561h&model_id=inspiron-15-7537)and so are the new HP Envy laptops.
3. The Dell you recommended is the older build – pretty heavy and not that great either…

Dan

@DH:
Thanks DH Data, you’re the bomb at finding computer deals!

hi

see,

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-3337U-vs-Intel-Core-i3-3120M

for comparo of toshiba deal from staples v. this lappy

Shua

Is this deal dead? I cant open the link

JoeShmoe

Link is not working…

Jason Smith

@ DH – the laptop I recommended has an i7 vs the one you listed as an i5, it has an optical drive, and it has a 6 cell battery vs. a 4 cell. And it comes out to $80 cheaper. Yes, it is a little heavier than the newer ones but they both have the new 4th generation processor.

The funny thing, if you read the comments on the model you have listed, the first review lists the con as “no optical drive.”

Jason Smith

And we can argue over exactly how many of the new models nowadays don’t have an optical drive, I was only responding to the use of the word “MOST” which I don’t feel is true. Most laptops still come with an optical drive. The fact that you found one that doesn’t on the Dell website, go to the main Dell page and their main models almost every one includes an optical drive.

Max

@jason it’s time for you to join ddf and see dh’s vast knowledge in the computer/tech world.

Shua

does anyone know if/how this is still avilable?

Thanks

Dan

@Shua:
It is still available but their site is getting slammed, keep on trying!

a4

dead

DH

@Jason – I wasn’t recommending that link over yours, I was merely pointing out that every manufacturer launches their new line of laptops every couple of months. Dell’s new line (which is the link I provided) doesn’t include an optical drive. The older lines like 15r will faze out as did the older Inspirons and all the Vostros etc. HP too doesn’t include optical drive standard in their new lineup even though the old Envy dv6t did include it.
The Laptop you recommended is more than double the price of this one, which means that a standard user can buy 2 of these for that price. Obviously the Dell 15r is superior to this machine, and the Dell 15Z that was on sale for $399 is by far a better buy – but this a good deal for many Deal finders and is considered a deal in every site that lists this.
I never used this machine so I can’t attest to its performance – unlike hundreds of other models that I used – but I can say with absolute certainty this is a good deal. This is over $100 cheaper than anything comparable right now and for someone looking for a cheap laptop this is a good buy. Obviously the lack of an optical drive is a con for some people but it’s not as much of a con as it was a year ago. In this day in age when hundreds of model come standard without an optical drive its more of a personal preference than a real negative factor.

rots5

I bought one, thanks. Now have to decide between the last dell deal and this one. 🙂

DH

Wait for Feedback and decide which one to keep and which to sell.
