New Bermuda based carrier Bermudair launches service today, hoping to fill a niche in the marketplace.

Their inaugural flight from Boston to Bermuda this morning was cancelled due to Hurricane Franklin, though they’re still selling seats from Westchester County to Bermuda this evening.

Fort Lauderdale to Bermuda service will launch on 9/22.

The airline will eventually fly Embraer 175s equipped with just 30 seats in a pretty awesome looking 1-1 “aisle class” configuration:

It’s not even equipped with overhead space as the airline says there will be plenty of built-in room for bags, so passengers will enjoy a nice airy cabin.

However, the airline is launching now without those seats, just in time to miss the peak summer season and in time for hurricane season?

For now, the airline will fly with a dense 88 passenger E175, but it will block a seat on each side so that you won’t be sitting next to anyone.

The fares for now are reasonable enough at $199 or $299 each way. However, come November 1st when the new seating configuration will be available, the fares skyrocket to an eye-watering $999-$1,049 each way.

Sure, there are people that will pay extra for comfort. But does anyone need that level of comfort on a 2 hour flight?

OK, I’m sure some people will pay for it, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on that being a viable business model.

How long do you think Bermudair will last? Will you try them out?

Assuming it doesn’t count as a US airline for 35% back on Amex Biz Plat?

looks like its modeled on JSX; serving high end passengers in niche markets (Westchester) with low operating cost, outcome will depend in large part if American /Union suit against JSX use of Part 135 prevails.

How much does it cost the airline per a flight?WO they’re huge overhead.
