Marriott improving something isn’t what I had on my Bingo card for 2023. The hotel chain has been so steadily downgrading former SPG benefits that “Bonvoyed” became a verb.
However Marriott writes to DansDeals that,
“Together with United Airlines, Marriott Bonvoy is implementing the first round of enhanced benefits of our preferred partnership with United MileagePlus. In addition to complimentary elite status, members now enjoy a 10,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred at a 3:1 ratio. Members will now get faster access to the points and miles in their accounts when they transfer between programs. A member email explaining the changes will be sent out next week.”
You can read more about the Marriott-United partnership and benefits here.
In other words, for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred, you will now get 30,000 United miles. This benefit replaces the previous 10% transfer bonus to United on top of the 5K miles bonus for transferring in increments of 60K Marriott points, which meant that you previously received 27.5K United miles for every 60K transferred Marriott points.
It’s worth noting that if you don’t transfer in multiples of 60K Marriott points then this will be a devaluation, as those transfers will no longer receive the 10% bonus for transfers to United and you then get a 3:1 transfer ratio. However as long as you stick to transferring in increments of 60K Marriott points to United, you will now come out ahead with an effective 2:1 transfer ratio after the 10K bonus miles.
This ongoing offer is now published on Marriott.com, though the transfer calculator has never properly worked since the SPG merger and doesn’t reflect the bonus. However it will be posted when the miles hit your United account.
Ignore the broken Marriott.com transfer calculator:
This comes after Marriott devalued transfers to American, Avianca, Delta, and Korean by removing the 5K mile bonus for transferring in multiples of 60K Marriott points. Transfers to those airlines are now 3:1, no matter how many points are transferred, so you would receive 20K miles for a 60K Marriott point transfer.
Transfers from Marriott to other airlines remain 3:1 with a 5K mile bonus for transferring in increments of 60K Marriott points, so you would receive 25K airline miles for a 60K Marriott point transfer. Again, that’s not reflected on the Marriott.com calculator, but will be shown when the miles reach your airline account.

I’m not sure why anyone would still have Marriott points. I know you definitely don’t recommend swiping on the Marriott cc. Big question is if Marriott will add any good options to transfer united miles to Marriott. 3/1 plus a bonus would be nice
I have just under a million points from SPG (last used for Israel stay before the changes). Is it worth transferring points now into united or just wait until they are needed (even with the few days delay)?
So: could I transfer AMEX points to Marriott for a 50% bonus, then transfer Marriott to United at a 50% loss, effectively transferring AMEX to united 1:1?
I know when optimized AMEX points can be worth far more, but I’m uncertain when my next international trip will be and often have use for United points…but please tell me if this is a terrible idea haha.
Where do you see an AMEX to Marriott bonus?
1.5*0.5 is 0.75, so no it would not be 1:1
I’ve been using Turkish for United flights. Much cheaper.
Sure, though United has additional award space for cardholders with United miles only.
And Turkish has a hard time with some routes, like nonstops between NYC/ORD-Hawaii.
And United has free changes or cancellations while Turkish charges $70.
“first round of enhancements”?
What else is coming?
What does Marriott mean by complinetary elite status with United?
@dan, please explain. Would like to know the same.
Thanks
he means if you have a high marriot status, than marriot will give you elite united status.
How can I transfer marriot points to united with different last name
You can transfer 100K Marriott points to another account.
Just transferred 180k miles. Was instant.
by both the point valuations I use (RRV & TPG) this would not be a deal as the Marriott points should be worth more than the united?
