Earlier today I wrote about El Al’s plans to launch Tel Aviv-Tokyo/NRT service on March 1, 2023.
I just took a peek at the flight’s award availability via Qantas and every date that I spot checked had availability in all 3 cabins! Economy will set you back 37.8K miles, premium is 70.8K, and business is 90K miles each way with no fuel surcharges.
Currently there is also a 20% bonus for transfers from AMEX to Qantas, so economy will set you back 31.5K AMEX points, premium is 59K, and business is 75K AMEX points each way.
Japan plans to remove tourist entry restrictions and quotas starting next month.
There is availability to visit during Japan’s famous cherry blossom season in March-April or later in the spring through the flight’s end of scheduling in June.
You could potentially even redeem miles from the US to Japan, where availability is much better and less expensive than to Israel, and then book an award to Israel.
Will you book travel to Tokyo on El Al?

Can I transfer citi miles to a Qantas/Turkish account of another person?
No. But you can transfer to your own account and book for them (though it’s a pain with Turkish, and with Qantas you officially have to be related to them but I’m not sure if that’s enforced).
Hi Dan,
Really exciting opportunity!
What are best deals US (LAX) to Japan?
Is it ANA via Virgin Atlantic points?
Yes, ANA via Virgin Atlantic miles is an absurd bargain.
JAL via Alaska miles is a bargain as well.
Thanks, Dan, as always.
For me, the fuel surcharge of $+700 RT kills it. Why do you feel it is an absolute bargain?
Is that what ANA is up to now? Wow.
Hopefully they lower it back down to what is was. Still a great deal, but fair enough.
“You could potentially even redeem miles from the US to Japan, where availability is much better and less expensive than to Israel, and then book an award to Israel”
I’m not sure what you mean to say with that?
Isn’t us to Isreal same price ?
US to Israel is very hard to find at a saver rate, so you pay a much higher everyday rate.
US to Japan and Japan to Israel are wide open at a saver rate. And you can enjoy visiting 2 countries.
So quantas would show sometimes award that are not at the saver rate ?
No. Partner airlines can typically only book the saver award rate.
So its not more expensive since you don’t really pay the everyday award since it’s not showing up quantas at all, its rather just rare to find.
I wasn’t referring to Qantas.
i wouldn’t get too excited …yet , let them first open and get back to normal or else you will land with little to go or eat
There is little kosher food to eat in Japan even when the country is open.
What Quantas cancellation policy on these tickets?
I think if it’s more than 24 Hours of the booking then it would cost 6000 Points to cancel & redeposit the miles.
When searching NRT-TLV nonstop on google flights, I did not get any result?!
Did you search after March 1, 2023?
