will this work if I plug it in on an airplane?
Tyr a microwave lol
An Ooni is best
Just putting it out there, this does not work as a Shabbos hotplate
Why not?
Covering the knob or removing the knob should be just fine, but you can AYLOR.
It does not get hot enough, Dan
According to the user manual: (LOW: 120°F, MED: 195°F and HIGH: 265°F)
It sure does
Works good enough for me…
Covering the knob or removing the knob does not work according to many poskim including R Moshe!
As I said, AYLOR.
Nope, you need to cover the fire AND the knob.
Which Rov said that just covering the knob is fine? never heard such a thing.
(You might be getting confused with a hotplate that doesn’t have a temperature control at all, then many say you don’t need to cover the fire, but that’s not the same thing.)
Likely needs to be covered either way to put things on on Shabbos, such as on top of another pan.
Again, AYLOR. The item will also change the equation. Pointless to do this here as there are many customs.
I was talking about KEEPING something on FOR Shabbos, (the function of a Blech) not putting something on ON SHABBOS (which is never allowed regardless if there is a blech or not. Unless it’s dry and it’s going on top of a pot or something)
And these things are in Shulchan Aruch, not really a matter of custom.
So you just qualified the never allowed with when it’s allowed. Cool.
And what is considered dry is certainly up to varying customs.
I don’t get what you mean
What part of AYLOR do you not understand
Where in shulchan aruch does it say you need garuf vekatum on foods already cooked? (Maybe biur halachas chumra but don’t bash others who may not keep)
https://dinonline.org/2021/01/10/shehiya-in-oven/
Just to quiet down your ignorance…
Silly. This is talking about mitzamak ve’yafe lo.That doesn’t even need a Blech according to many. I’m talking about something that is partially cooked
Just saying don’t get too excited, cuz if you ask your LOR (Orthodox that is) that’s what you’ll hear, because that’s what it says in Shulchan Aruch.
*flipping pages urgently* What chapter deals with hotplates, again? Also, how do you say hotplate in aramaic?
Siman 253, 318 on Orach Chaim. Have a look.
(If you manage to find an Orthodox Rav that allows this to be used as a Blech by covering the knob, let us know.
Good luck finding one.)
Are you still hocking a chainik here?
Cover the knob and put a cookie sheet on top so it’s not derech bishul, and you can do chazara according to just about anyone.
And as I always say, AYLOR. And stop making blanket statements.
Finally you got my point! Lol
You need to put a cookie sheet, unlike the one’s which don’t have a temperature control.
And my rov holds you need a cookie sheet either way. Pointless to continue this discussion, like I’ve said time and time again, AYLOR.
For Chazara, not for Shehiya (assuming)
Correct.
make sure the covering you use does not cause the hotplate to overheat
Some will hold it’s also a problem of hatmana bdovor hamosif hevel. So you would need to make sure to take off the cover/silver foil of the food.
And yes, some are more lenient then others regarding what’s considered dry.
“Stam” hasn’t posted in a while. Stam.
There might be diff opinions but I know some rabbonim def prefer the not adjustable hot plates. Chefman used to make this some one that wasn’t adjustable but doesn’t seem to make it.
Not sure if they still make them, but covering the knob should work.
AYLOR.
Again, fake news. That’s not enough. You’d also need to cover the fire (unlike the one’s without a temperature control that many say you can put things directly on them.
And many say you can’t do chazara even without a knob, unless you have a pan separating.
And many will say covering a knob is fine.
This is all pointless discussion here. AYLOR is the only correct answer. Posting here as if there is any concensus is naarishkeit.
Although fun fact: you don’t need a Blech to keep food that is at least half cooked (or fully raw) on the fire unless you want to be able to put it back on the fire on Shabbos.
I am sorry to say for those that want to bash this post…. There are poskim like dan said that does allow returning this onto the hot plate even on Saturday day. Of course ask your local rav however i have a yalkut Yosef open in front of me which allows returning solids to a hot plate on Shabbat since it is not an act of cooking someone will do on the weekday as long as knobs are covered even if the pot was put down on the ground. See yalkut Yosef siman 253 Hilchot Shabbat chelek 1. Not that everyone holds of this but a good majority does. He even says you can put liquids on the hot plate that’s set on a timer so that when you put it on the hot plate is not hot yet and then it will automatically turn on afterwards. Some hold it’s not allowed but SFardim do take this leniency. It may be night on your side of the world but on the other side it’s day so no point in really arguing it’s all a matter on where your holding. 🙂
only way to put heat liquids on shabbat is crockpot otherwise bishul, sephardim hold lach bishul acher bishul , even through grama
Dan please add a sticky comment on top to prevent others from reading this halacha conversation in toilet etc…
Not telling you what to do, aylor…
Remain calm.
In the toilet? Or while on the toilet???
Just cover the toilet, should be fine.
But again AYLOR.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
For the comic relief that is 🙂
WRONG! You have to cover the flusher handle too.
And stop making blanket statements
can i use this on monday?
Ha ha ha ha!
Oh that’s really funny
Depends if tachanun was said….
Which Lubavitcher rov would say taking off the knobs is enough and no need for some sort of blech
Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner OBM of Beni Brak… whoops he wasn’t lubavitcher
Lubavich rov means according to the alter rebbe’s shulchan aruch….
Dan, if you haven’t done it yet, perhaps create a separate forum titled AYLOR, combining all such past and future posts, where everyone can chime in with their personal views, halachik opinions, chumros and you-name-it-mishugas…?!
Alive and cheaper now
im happy i dont have to AYLOR since there so many Poskim right here saying what they think! theres nothing like Dansdeals!!
Ded
Works in Israel?
They also have the long tray in special, which doesn’t have a temputare knob, it might be helpful for shabbos, for the worrying people out there
Cycles on and off to keep the temperature constant. So if you put something cold on it, might not that cause it to turn on? And the same for taking something hot off of it?
Do you need to toivel it?
Not if food doesn’t touch the tray itself.
Inverted cupcake tins work well on hot plate for shabbos
Dan. Seems like Rabbis don’t use the website. Maybe your next target audience….;)
Available from Costco for $40
Shipped to your house?
