Many airlines give discounts on mileage tickets for infants.

On US/Canada flights, lap children under 2 fly free and don’t need a ticket in advance, they can be added at the ticket counter.

Speaking personally, I join United flight 232 survivor and lead flight attendant Jan Brown in strongly advocating against bringing lap children on a plane. If at all possible, buy a seat and bring along a carseat for your child. It’s much safer in the case of turbulence and it means you’ll be able to enjoy your flight when your child sleeps in a carseat instead of your arms or in a precarious bassinet.

For international flights, many airlines charge 10% of the full fare, which can be pricey. However airlines like ANA, Asiana, BA, and Korean charge just 10% of the adult mileage requirement. Lufthansa and Qantas only charge taxes. Virgin Atlantic charges just 1,000 miles in coach or 5,000 miles in business/first class each way. Air Canada only charges C$25 for lap children! Those fees go according to the carrier booking the award ticket, not the airline operating the flight.

But until today, I have never heard of a mileage discount for kids in a seat. [Commenters below point out that Lufthansa Miles and More also offers a 25% discount on award tickets for kids under 12!}

Commenter dsh321 tipped me off to the fact that the Air France/KLM Flying Blue program is discounting kids award tickets that are under age 12 by 25%!

A few searches on AirFrance.us confirm that information. You’ll need to login to a Flying Blue account to search for award tickets.

For example a flight from JFK to Tel Aviv for 1 adult on Delta is 37K miles+$10 or on Air France is 25K miles+$92:

Adding a child under 12 on Delta adds 27,750 miles or on Air France adds 18,750 miles. Those are 25% off the adult mileage requirements.

A flight from JFK to Tel Aviv for 1 adult on KLM is 25K miles+$81:

Adding a child under 12 on KLM adds 18,375 miles, or 25% off the adult mileage requirement.

A flight from JFK to Amsterdam for 1 adult on Delta is 24.5K miles+$10:

Adding a child under 12 on Delta adds 18,375 miles, or 25% off the adult mileage requirement.

A flight from JFK to Paris for 1 adult on Air France is 22K miles+$64:

Adding a child under 12 on Air France adds 16,500 miles, or 25% off the adult mileage requirement.

This also applies in business class.

A flight from JFK to Tel Aviv for 1 adult on Air France is 55K miles+$233:

Adding a child under 12 on Air France adds 41,250 miles, or 25% off the adult mileage requirement.

The 25% discount does not appear to work on Promo Awards.

I wasn’t entirely sure if this was new or if I was living under a rock, but DDF member SOS confirmed with me that in late March he paid the full 25K miles per person rate, despite having 3 kids under 12, so it appears that this is a new discount.

It would be great to see similar kids discounts from other programs!

You can transfer AMEX, Capital One, Chase, or Citi points instantly to Flying Blue.

Through 5/15, you can get a 25% bonus when you transfer Chase points to Flying Blue.

No name

So since you can put in any DOB for the kids, everyone that looks around 12 can technically take advantage of that ? or is there any risk ?

The Miles and More program has offered this same 25% child discount for some time already. Sounds like Flying Blue finally decided to match. I’ll certainly take it! Thanks for reporting.

This is definitely not the first, even for the experts, there is always more to learn and grow.

See here for another example of kids discount

As Chase UR has a 25% bonus on transfers to KLM till 5/15, seems like a very good option for flight to Israel, with or without, the discount for children. Am I missing something? Looking mid August, comes out several hundred less than other airlines.
