Japanese Star Alliance carrier ANA is offering a rare status match opportunity for North America based flyers.
ANA says that, for example, AA Gold status and Delta Silver status will be matched to ANA Bronze status, which is Star Alliance Silver. And ANA says that AA Platinum or higher and Delta Gold or higher will be matched to ANA Platinum status, which is Star Alliance Gold.
ANA also says they will also consider matching status from any non-Star Alliance airline. Status from last year or this year can be matched.
To request a status match, you must first be enrolled in the ANA Mileage Club.
You can then fill out the status match request form.
ANA won’t email you when you receive the status match, you’ll just have to keep checking the ANA site or app to see if your status has been upgraded.
Status matching can take up to 14 business days.
Matched status will expire 3/31/23.
Star Alliance Silver status doesn’t really have meaningful benefits, but Star Alliance Gold status does.
Star Alliance Gold status allows you and a guest access to Star Alliance lounges worldwide when flying on any Star Alliance carrier. Incredibly, non-United Star Alliance Gold status also works to get access to United Clubs even when flying on domestic itineraries. United doesn’t even allow their own 1K Star Alliance Gold elites to access United Clubs on domestic first class tickets unless they have a paid United Club membership!
Star Alliance Gold status comes with a free checked bag, but it doesn’t stack on top of the free bag that United credit cards come with. However if you are flying internationally on a flight with 1 free bag, you will get 2 free bags.
Star Alliance Gold status also comes with priority baggage handling, priority boarding, priority Gold Track security and immigration lines, priority waitlisting, and upgrades to business first class on the Heathrow Express.
United does not give economy plus seats or upgrades to partner Star Alliance Gold members, though they do offer free same day confirmed flight changes.
It’s worth noting that ANA also has an excellent Star Alliance award chart with bargains like a business class round-trip to Europe or South America for 88K miles, to Asia for 95K miles, to Israel or Africa for 104K miles, or to Oceania for 120K miles.
ANA also still has an awesome old-school round-the-world award chart with up to 8 permitted stopovers, though those have to be booked over the phone.
You can transfer miles from AMEX to ANA at a 1:1 ratio.

ANA Charges me 104k to Israel RT BUT above $1500 in fuel surcharges. Is that the norm ?.
No fuel surcharges on Air Canada, Avianca, Copa, Ethiopian, SAS, TAP, or United.
Otherwise, it goes based on the airline. Lufthansa Group airlines are notorious for high fuel surcharges, so avoid those.
@dan do you have to fly if you are matched? I’ve seen other airlines offer a match and then a challenge with a minimum number of miles you have to fly to keep the matched status . Thanks for sharing this!
