Rita’s annual free ices for the first day of Spring is Wednesday, 03/20.

All customers will get a free Rita’s in a limited edition cup.

Flavors rotate by the day, but if you’re lucky your local store will have some of my favorites, like Passion Fruit or Chocolate Peanut Butter. What’s your favorite flavor?

Disclaimer: While Rita’s products are all kosher, only select stores are under rabbinical kosher supervision and only the water ices are parve. There are more than a dozen kosher certified stores in CT, FL, NJ, NV, NY, MD, and PA.

Lkwd

Lakewood at some locations has cholov yisroel custard

Dan

@Lkwd:
I thought it’s just the same old soft-serve klein’s ice cream you can get anywhere?

If it was real C”Y custard that may just merit a trip to Lakewood šŸ˜€

Moishebatchy

Nothing in Cleveland? šŸ™

Dan

@Moishebatchy:
There is but not under hashgocha.
Time to talk to my LOR or else drive to Pittsburgh šŸ˜‰

hari

Baltimore also has some locations

Dan

@hari:
Thanks, added MD.

Moishebatchy

@Dan: PIT DO? šŸ˜‰

elikay2

lakewood has only one cholov yisroel location

drew

@Dan: Hay Dan, I was once at the Lkwd location that has the cholov yisroel custard and when I came to the window to order they asked me to sign a form that I “witnessed” them put the cholov yisroel custard into the cholov yisroel machine, and I saw that it was a sealed Ritas container with a Kleins sticker on it. So I don`t think it is the reg Kleins stuff. Not to mention that it really tastes awesome… Much better then the reg cholov yisroel stuff. Come down and Ill sponsor you one šŸ™‚

cbc

What do you mean: “While RitaĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢s products are all kosher only select stores are under rabbinical kosher supervision”
If there is no supervision on the factory or store, how can you assume all are kosher?

Yankel

Dan is correct. The ice cream is good ole Kleins. They have 2 machines Kleins and regular non CY

Jeff Baum

They have a Kosher Rita’s in Henderson NV

Moishebatchy

@cbc: It’s quite simple: if Klein’s ice cream is being sold in Domino’s pizza, you generally cannot eat it, since the store is not a supervised establishment, so even if the product is kosher, there’s no telling what they’ve done with it.

Same thing here: Rita’s factories produce kosher product. But if the retail store has no supervision, that poses a problem, since there’s no telling what happens once they open the package.

MANGO!!!!

Dan

@Moishebatchy:
Sounds good to me.

@cbc:
Thus the disclaimer.

@Yankel:
Ah well.
Why do they call it custard then?

@Jeff Baum:
Thanks.

@Moishebatchy:
Which leads to my question, why are 7/11 slurpees considered acceptable?
And what are the differences between the Water Ices and the slurpees?

@chez:
Mango is very good, just not as good as the 2 flavors I mentioned šŸ˜€

Rita's in NJ

There’s a Rita’s in Mahwah, NJ under10 min from Wesley Hills/Monsey (they advertise w/ specials in the local ‘The Front Page’ & ‘Access’ magazines I believe. The kids LOVE going there – it’s a true treat (and it’s right by the train station for additional entertainment to boot!).

Jack

@Dan: The commercial soda and slurpy machines are generally not a problem, (as long as their an approved drink-check the Star K website) because they come from the factory in sealed canisters, which hook up to the machines. You can’t add anything to the canisters. Other products such as Ice Cream has the potential for someone to add something to the flavoring. Some people do refrain from using those machines, because they don’t know if the product used in the machine spouts, etc….. Was a kosher product.

Dan

@Jack:
I have not done the research, but I’d guess that the water ices are just “slurpees from a package”, no?
Anyone know for sure?

Ari

Any in florida

obi

Not sure what the water ices mean. But in order for them to make the ritas ices, they must mix a few different components into a big ice machine which makes the finished product. This includes the base flavor, the pieces of fruite etc. Each flavor has its own recipe. The same goes for the custards. Each individual shop must make the different flsvors. Additionally some of the topings offered arent kosher.

Dans the man!!!!!

Its way to cold for me to be having ices right now!

ydbe

water ice & slurpee are NOT equal. the water ices have actual pieces of fruit and a much different texture than slurpees. I am a big fan of both & assure you they are way different.

Dan

@obi:
Good to know, thanks!

@ydbe:
Of course they’re different, I just didn’t know it wasn’t a completed premade mix.

CLEAnon

@Dan @moishebatchy

There should be no difference. CRC has a great article on why slurpees are kosher regardless of supervision. One of the reasons is that regardless of what was in the pipeline previously, both the temperature and the time period are not enough to traife anything up. That is in addition to the contractual problems a store would encounter if they were to fool around with adding other ingredients. Both of those considerations apply to Rita’s IMHO.

Link to CRC article and relevant paragraph below-

http://www.crcweb.org/kosher_articles/slurpees.php

Is there a problem with the Slurpee machines?

Operating with the knowledge that almost all known Slurpee syrups are kosher, it is still important to relay that the minute amount of dairy or non-kosher in the flavors would not change a machineĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢s status to dairy or non-kosher. Not only is the machine itself set at 28ƂĀ° Fahrenheit, it is highly unlikely that the Slurpees would sit in the machine for anything close to the 24 hour kosher deadline of when, at that point, flavors may be absorbed into the walls of the utensil holding it. HereĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢s why: the barrel of the machines holds 92 ounces of finished Slurpee product, and 7-ElevenĆ¢ā‚¬ā„¢s top-selling Slurpee cup is 22 ounces, which means that approximately 4.5 large cups of Slurpee are held in the machines. Obviously, the Slurpees in the machines are replaced constantly. Consequently, the cRc can safely and confidently announce that there are no problems with the Slurpee machines.

Now, what if 7-Eleven puts a kosher pareve flavor in a machine that previously held a non-kosher or dairy flavor? What if leftover non-kosher or dairy syrup infiltrates my pareve flavor? While certainly not the common occurrence, it is a possibility because, generally, stores do not clean the machines between flavors. As a matter of fact, they claim that kids love getting mixed flavors. While this might happen on occasion, the many poskim that I spoke to on this matter all agreed, for various Halachik reasons, one does not have to worry about the small amount of leftover dairy or non-kosher flavor.

chana

@CLEAnon: Thank you! That was a very clear explanation!

dinger

so does all that mean that kosher flavors at ritas are ok even if store is not under supervision? one just opened in new city and want to know if we can go there
