Most hotels chains reorganize their categories yearly to keep them current with the average rates that they charge. Marriott reserves the right to change hotel categories at any time, but most of them are done in March.
This year’s hotel category changes have 51 hotels going up in category and 150 going down.
That’s a tiny fraction of last year’s absolutely brutal changes despite a year that saw hotel rates and occupancy plummet. I lost faith in Marriott after last year’s changes and it’s very disappointing to see that last year’s changes haven’t been corrected.
You can book stays before 3/3 to lock in current rates for future stays at hotels that are going up. You can book stays up to 350 days in advance. Almost all hotel stays are cancellable for free until a certain amount of time before the stay (read the fine print).  If you have a reservation at a hotel that is going down then just cancel and rebook the stay on 3/3 when this year’s category changes go into effect.
If you have travel packages, you’ll want to reserve hotels for those before categories go up.
Hotels going up from category 5 to 6 will no longer be bookable with anniversary nights from cards like the discontinued Starwood Consumer AMEX, Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, and the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Consumer Card.
Hotels going up from category 6 to 7 will generally no longer be bookable with anniversary nights from cards like the Marriott Brilliant AMEXÂ and the discontinued Ritz Carlton card. However you can still use these nights at category 7 hotels during off-peak times when they only cost 50K points.
Note that you won’t be able to change the dates on a reservation after the price goes up, your only options are to use the stay or cancel it and get your points back. You can make one night reservations if you’re not sure how many nights you want to stay, though you won’t be able to take advantage of a free night on a 5 night point stay like that.
Unfortunately you can no longer lock in rates with Points Advance if you don’t have enough points to book a stay.
Highlights:
- Zion National Park gains a 35K anniversary night eligible hotel.
- The Opus, Westchester, previously a Ritz Carlton, is now eligible for anniversary nights.
- Vancouver gains a 35K anniversary night eligible hotel and the JW Marriott there drops from 7 to 6.
- Curaçao gains a 35K anniversary night eligible hotel.
- Many Bali hotels go down in category.
Lowlights:
- Despite countries like Israel being closed, hotels haven’t gone down in category as they should have.
- The W Aspen went from category 8 to 7 last year. It will go back up to 8 again.
- Despite Kauai’s draconian tourism rules, the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort climbs from a 5 to 6 and won’t be eligible for 35K anniversary nights.
- Ocean City, MD hotels all climb out of reach from 35K anniversary nights.
- There are no Marriott hotels dropping from category 8 to 7.
- Only 1 Ritz Carlton hotel goes down in category.
- No S. Regis or W hotels go down in category.

Marriott is just so blah. Any hotel that can potentially be nice, just gets more expensive every year. Most nice hotels are already hovering between category 6-8 as a result of the last 3 years of devaluations.
Yup, only highlight of the SPG-Marriott merger is that award rooms at all suite hotels and overwater villas became much more affordable.
Other than that, beyond terrible. Killed the card spending rates, raised point requirements, out of control category creep, killed SPG moments, no enforcement on hotels not giving available suites or late checkout to Platinums, etc, etc.
Agreed. I hate that all the bloggers give them a free pass. If we had a unified voice out there, they wouldn’t be able to go all out against their customers like they do now.
Marriott doesn’t give me a heads up to changes like this as they do for other bloggers because they don’t like my coverage.
I just say it as I see it. C’est la vie.
Any chance of any of the old guard from SPG banding together and launching a new hotelier company, similar to what David Neeleman is doing with airlines?
A lot of them moved to Hyatt 🙂
Only redeeming value ATM is SpG Biz cards with AMEX $15 wireless credits making holding card a money maker with a free night to boot.
I keep the cards for the anniversary nights and status, but never use them anymore.
Had to dust them off for the restaurant and wireless credits!
“The Opus, Westchester, NY, was 6, now 5” is a highlight as well . The former The Ritz-Carlton New York, Westchester property will become a 35K anniversary night eligible hotel.
Oh wow thank you for pointing that out. I had no idea that it had switched over names. This was the Ritz that went from 5 to 6 last year and is now back down to a 5 making it anniversary night eligible.
When you compare their award chart and point chart to Hyatt… it is flat out awful… they have shown complete disdain for pt holders and elites the last 5 years. Also wish more bloggers would speak up!
I just got the Marriott Business Amex, can you outline the benefits of this card? (mobile credits etc.) Or point to the post where you have this info?

Wuhan Marriott Hotel Optics Valley, Wuhan, China, was 3, now 2
WHAT A SURPRISE
the langley buckinghamshrie looks nice did you ever stay there? wondering when the uk would open up again to americansf
Vancouver gains a 35K anniversary night eligible hotel and the JW Marriott there drops from 7 to 6.
I’m assuming you are implying that this will be eligible for off peak redemption but according to the Marriott chart, category 6 is 36k points during off peak so wouldn’t that not qualify for 35K certificate redemptions?
2 separate Vancouver hotels in the drops.
Can 35k free nights be upgraded to 50k free nights?
Also would upgrading to the brilliant card upgrade all my 35k nights to 50k nights?
No and no.
