Tesla has finally launched the Standard Range Model Y and it will cost $41,990. If you order with my referral link you’ll also get 1,000 free supercharger miles. It has a 244 mile range and can accelerate from 0-60 in just 5.3 seconds. That’s a $4,000 premium for the mid-size SUV compared to the Model 3 mid-size sedan.
When the Model Y was launched last March the cheapest model was the long range at $52,990 with a 326 mile range. That model has since gone down to $49,990, which is just a $3,000 premium compared to the Model 3. The Performance model launched at $62,990 and has since gone down to $59,990, a $5,000 premium compared to the Model 3.
There are also state incentives available, such as a $2,000 rebate in NY.
Last month, I wrote about my 2 year experience with the Model 3. While service is not quite up to par, it’s truly an incredible car that is a real joy to drive and it gets better every week thanks to software updates that add awesome new features. Fair warning, once you go electric it will be very hard to go back to gas!
Tesla is also now selling a 7 seat version of the Model Y. Previously they only sold a 5 seat version. That option adds $3,000 to the cost of the SUV.

Tesla sells a $1,000 option for white seats, though I wouldn’t recommend that as stains will show much more easily. The white seats and the trim can also cause more glare.
All Teslas now come with autopilot included for free that make highway driving a breeze. I would certainly not recommend spending $10,000 on “full self driving” as it is today.

Yes, you can toggle between Cash, Loan, and Lease on the order page.
Teslas maintain great value and that’s not reflected in lease pricing, so you’ll likely be better off buying and selling it yourself instead of leasing.
Right now only to buy, unless a private car dealership buys them and leases them.

False, I know many ppl who leased Tesla’s from years ago.
Another issue with leasing is you may not be able to buy out the lease when done. Tesla plans to use these cars as part of their robo taxi network in the future.
My next car bli neder will be a tesla. That much I have decided. Ideally if I can wait two years that is when I will get one. Maybe sooner if something comes up.

Do you find much use of the AutoPilot even though you need to keep your hands on the steering wheel?
It’s incredible. You don’t need to keep your hands on the wheel.
Once a minute it will ask you to confirm you’re paying attention, which you can do by toggling the volume, the speed, or tugging slightly on the wheel.
Dan – What happens if you do not respond? I would guess autopilot remains engaged, but it keeps pinging you over and over? Just curious.
I believe that it will disengage and refuse to engage again until you shift into park. But I’ve never gotten to that point.
Doesn’t the new Honda odyssey have that same feature?
It’s nothing close to Tesla’s autopilot.
Dan – Can you talk on your cellphone or text? I believe legally they can still pull you over and autopilot is not an ‘excuse’, but I am wondering practically on this.
Legally, no.
Practically speaking on a highway with autopilot engaged, sure. The car is doing all the work and watching for what’s happening around it. But most accidents are caused by complacency, so I wouldn’t recommend doing it.
You have to pay for some exterior paint colors. Any advantage to choosing the more costly colors?
No advantage other than personal preference.

I probably would if I was buying a new one today, but my 2018 Model 3 has grandfathered features like lifetime free LTE, priority software updates, acceleration boost, and full self driving that will make me hang onto it for a long time. Even the color that I got was discontinued years ago 😀
When we need to take the family somewhere we use my wife’s 2014 Odyssey, also a solid car 🙂
We almost bought a 2020 Odyssey but the salesguy lied about price so deal didn’t happen. Wondering if we should get a Tesla instead.

Dan, I keep hearing about the great autopilot from many different places(not the fsd). I was just wondering how this is any different than most new cars nowadays… For instance, my volvo has adaptive cruise control and keeps me in lane. I’m just wondering what additional features the tesla has that most cars don’t. Thanks
It’s much more advanced and adapt at lane changes, surrounding obstacles, and the like. Take it for a test drive and see?
The current version of autopilot which comes standard on all models does not have lane changing capability.
They don’t have automatic lane change, but they will change lanes for you when you signal.
I have auto lane change disabled anyway.
Your information is outdated at least in the case of the model 3. In the current version of the basic auto-pilot for Model 3 there is no auto lane change, with or without, signaling. Nor is there any option to toggle lane change assist on or off.
Interesting, before Tesla gave me FSD I was able to do that, but I guess they now call that enhanced autopilot.

I’ve driven it before but never had a chance to test out the autopilot features. However the acceleration was incredible! Doesn’t compare to any regular ice car
Any way to filter the browser on the Tesla?(my understanding is that whether or not you get LTE you can always connect via WiFi)
Not sure if it can be filtered, but if it’s in valet mode (locked with a PIN) then features like browser would be disabled.
What are the ramifications of driving in valet mode? Are any other features of the care restricted other than the browser?

Seems like I’m a bit late to this post! Do you have more details the process of how they disabled the data? We’re they still able to get software updates and gps data and just the browser was disabled?

The white seats clean up easily and did not stain. Plenty YouTube videos demonstrating this
And I’ve seen stained seats as well. Likely depends on what spilled and how fast it’s cleaned.
What are your thoughts on people saying they have glare problems?
I have the Model 3 with white seats. Have not had any glare problems. Love the car but still getting used to having to plug in. Problem is when you get home with 30% and find out you need to go out and drive right then and there. With gas, it’s a 5 min fill-up. Even with tesla super charger it takes time!
How far are you driving that you’re getting home on 30%?
If I leave Monsey to Newark with 80% (drive 45 miles each way for a total of 90 miles), I return with 40%. If I stop in NYC instead of going straight to Monsey, I end up with 30%. This is with the extended battery. There is no way from 100% to 0% is 300+ miles! Love the car but hate the plugging in constantly!

Maybe yes, maybe not, but as it is today it’s not worth anything close to that.
