Update: South Africa will not allow tourists who have been to red listed countries like France, Israel, the UK, or the US, in the past 10 days.
South Africa has been under heavy lockdown since March, with a ban on all international flights.
The country announced today that they will reopen to international flights and tourists starting on October 1st.
However, President Ramaphosa said they may restrict travel from some countries with high infection rates. It’s not clear what parameters will be used for those restrictions or which countries may be affected. Given that, it’s hard to imagine tourists locking in plans until those are known.
You will need to provide a negative COVID-19 test from within 72 hours of departure in order to avoid a quarantine. If you are symptomatic upon arrival, you will have to take another COVID-19 test. If you do test positive, you will have to enter a quarantine facility at your own expense.
I had been booked to fly on United to Cape Town in late October, but last month United already cancelled their flights to South Africa until mid-December. Delta did the same as well.

Hmm – My shul is only allowing limited seating even with masks but some people are willing to spend 18 plus hours sitting right next to a stranger who will likely not be wearing a mask. At least while they are eating/drinking.

How does a passport indicate this? Just a stamp in my passport showing I entered a low-risk European country 10 days before I fly to SA? Does that prove anything? Asking for a friend.

Personally I kinda want to see how stable the country is with all the COVID job losses. While risk of COVID maybe greatly reduced, the risk of becoming a crime victim is likely not.
Things had really settled down and economic stability with greatly reduced crime over past five years.
