Air Canada and Abu Dhabi based Etihad are now partners for earning and redeeming miles.
I flew in Etihad 777 first class from Male to Abu Dhabi and in A380 shower suites from Abu Dhabi to JFK a few years ago using American miles. I didn’t find the service to be as polished as Dubai based Emirates, but it was still a great experience.
Currently the best way to fly to the Middle East or the Maldives on Etihad in premium cabins is with 70K AA miles in business class or 115K AA miles in first class. However AA doesn’t have any transfer partners besides Marriott.
With Aeroplan you’ll need 75K miles in business class or 105K miles in first class to the Maldives or 82.5K miles in business class or 115K miles in first class to the Middle East.
There are no fuel surcharges for travel on Etihad. Plus you can combine Star Alliance flights together with Etihad flights on the same award.
Aeroplan also allows for a free stopover, so you can fly United to London and stopover there before continuing on your journey with Etihad.
You can transfer AMEX or Capital One points instantly to Aeroplan.
Etihad recently flew a cargo flight to Tel Aviv for the first time.
The Jewish community of the UAE is also starting to come out of the shadows as the country’s ties with Israel grow:
Perhaps we’ll see Etihad flights to Tel Aviv one day?
Until then, there’s always the Avi Liberman method of flying to Israel on Etihad. Should we let him know you can also fly from Amman to Tel Aviv on Royal Jordanian? 😉
Will you use Aeroplan miles to fly on Etihad?

I love redeeming Aeroplan on United for no carrier imposed surcharges. I wonder if/what they’ll be on Ethiad for international travel USA to Maldives. Also wonder if I’m dreaming I might find 3 First Class award tickets available on the same flight.

No not them
Hawaii to Australia si 190K in F, so HNL-EWR//JFK-AUH0SYD for 95K o/w? long flight, but still, wow!
no not chase amex capital one etc
Seems backtracking isn’t allowed. For example. JFK-AUH-LHR is not bookable. But, JFK-AUH-SYD is bookable. That’s a nice routing with a stopover allowed.
When does availability start?
Avi L is really getting a lot of publicity these days. I still find it funny even though you keep on posting his video.
Thanks for all of your work. I really appreciate your efforts. Keep up the great work!
Can I stop over in Abu Dhabi to get to go to Europe ?
Any updates about the mileage program changes that you posted last time on may 7, 2020. Note that Air Canada is bringing Aeroplan back in house on June 30, 2020 and there may be changes to the program. However they have promised to not pull a Delta or United and delete their award charts.
