-Ending tomorrow, 07/17, at about 5pm EDT: Chase British Airways Visa: 50K Avios for spending $1, or 75K for spending $10K in 1 year, or 100K for spending $20K in 1 year, plus 1.25-2.5 Avios per dollar spent, and a free companion award ticket certificate on a mileage ticket for spending $30K.  No foreign exchange fees. Free flights start at just 4,500 Avios with no fuel surcharges and no expedite/close-in booking fees.  I’ve flown to NYC round-trip twice in the past month on last-minute flights that would have otherwise cost $1,200 for just 9,000 and $5 tax, hard to beat that!

Hey Dan,

Is there anyway around paying the $95 annual fee for the Chase British Airways Visa? And if the card were to be canceled before the first year is up to avoid paying the annual fee for the second year would I be able to keep the Avios points and for how long before expiring/losing them?

Thanks

realistic

You wrote plat biz gets $400 in airline credits the first year. I think you should specify that its not all at once. $200 before January and $200 afterwards.

Yossi

Do you still have to pay the $450 annual fee for the first year for the Amex business platinum card??

Kevin

How do we know for sure that the plat card goes away tomorrow

Dan

@Eli:
If you cancel a card within 60 days you can get a refund of the annual fee.
Avios last for 36 months from the time of last activity. Closing the credit card won’t affect them.

@realistic:
Will do.

@Yossi:
If you close it within 60 days you get a refund. If you close or downgrade it after 60 days then you get a prorated refund. In other words if you kept it open until January 2013 to get the full $400 you would get a refund of 6 months, or $225 of the $450 annual fee.

@Kevin:

And as far as the “last 12 months…” bonus point verbiage…not true in my experience.

jay

does anybody know if the gift card purchase on the amex plat for sure works…??

Dan

@jay:

Eli

So can I get the 50K points posted before the 60 days by immediately spending $1 when I get the card and then canceling the card and keep the points for up to 36 months assuming no activity?

Dan

@Eli:
Once miles are in an airline or hotel account they’re there for good (except for miles for purchased items that are returned), subject to the expiration policies of the airline/hotel.

George

I think the Mercedes Benz AMEX Platinum is a better deal with 50k points.

love this blog

Got a offer for the gold amex spend 1000$ for 25k and got instead approved for the first time amex!!!! Thanks Dan for everything!!!!!

Mendy

Dan, which 3 AMEX cards would you suggest I apply for, if I am doing the 3 browser trick.
thanks

RR

i opened up a british airways card in the past and got the 50K . I just applied again and got approved. do you know if i can get the 50K again?

ira

why is it only in 100 dollar increments and not more than that?

Izzy

I am trying to figure out where to find the 100 dollar increment benefit. I am familiar with the $200 airline credit, but what card is the 100 dollar increment all about?I am a consumer platinum card holder by the way. Thank you!

I am looking for the best possible amex business card. I use a lot of gas and rent machines for construction jobs. What is the best card with most bonus points and low annual fee?

Dovid

Southwest link is dead

Dan

Dan- if I opened up the Amex personal platinum for 50,000 points last August, got my 50,000 points, downgaded to a zync within 60 days, would I be able to open up a mercedes benz platinum and get the 50K points, or the fact that I still have the Zync from last time around won’t allow me to get the points??
