Next Saturday, 06/30, is the last day to earn 5 points per dollar at grocery stores and movie theaters with Chase Freedom as part of the Q2 bonus categories. You can earn the bonus points on up to $1,500 of spending between 04/01 and 06/30 at any grocery stores and movie theaters. That’s on top of 10% bonus points and 10 points per transaction if you also have a Chase checking account.
Don’t have enough to buy right now? Buy gift cards at grocery stores to get a ton of bonus points up front on up to $1,500 of spending and then use the gift cards as needed! I personally value my Ultimate Rewards points at a minimum of 1.8 cents each, so this is like a rebate of more than 9%. My local grocery store, Giant Eagle, sells gift cards for dozens of different stores, and they also provide free gas (typically about $6-$12 of free gas) for every $100 of gift cards purchased. Add to that the 5x Freedom bonus and it’s quite lucrative to stock up on gift cards!
Next, don’t forget to activate your Q3 Chase Freedom 5% categories.
For 07/01/12-09/30/12 the 5 point categories are for all spending at Gas stations and Restaurants!
Here is a link that explains where you will and won’t earn the 5 points per dollar this quarter.
And don’t forget for Q4: the categories will be hotels, airlines, Best Buy, and Kohl’s.
You earn 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 of spending per quarter.
Although they are called “5% categories” you really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be cashed out for 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending you will earn at least 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points.
However if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Bold card then you can transfer the points over to one of those cards and then transfer them at a 1:1 ratio into much more valuable airline miles (United, British Airways, Southwest, Korean, etc) or hotel points (Hyatt, etc).
Have any Chase checking account as well? You qualify for Chase Exclusives which gives you even more bonus points!
You will earn:
-10% bonus points on top of all base points earned.
-10 bonus points for every transaction you make.
And that’s on top of points for spending in 1% and 5% categories!
For smaller purchases there is no more lucrative card than Chase Freedom if you have Chase checking. Even if you are just buying a cup of Coffee for $2 you should use Freedom over Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card as Sapphire will earn 2.14 points per dollar for a total of 4.28 points while Freedom will earn 1.1 points per dollar plus 10 points, for a total of 12.2 points.

I don’t have a Freedom Card yet, but if I understand correctly, you can make 1000 $1 transactions on amazon payments and get 11,000 points! Is this so?
Can I prepay my grocery (put money on my account) to get more points?
Also, I’m not sure how to check if my checking account is linked, if I’m already getting 10% bonus points and 10 points per transaction, where on the site would I check that?
Dan, did you say that you can buy gift cards with your Chase Freedom card? Is there any fee for this?
@mordy:
Actually 11,110 points for free, but consider the time that would take!
@Shreck:
Sure.
You can look on your last billing statement and compare it to the image in this post.
@MacDan:
Huh?
Go to your local grocery store and buy gift cards to any other store that you want for free and often the grocery will offer rewards as well on top of what you get from Freedom.
is the chase freedom visa have the same promotion?????
@ben:
Yes.
I don’t have the Freedom card yet. If I get it next month do I have to wait until Q4 before I qualify for any bonus categories or are the current Q3 automatically added to new accounts?
are there gas stations that sell visa gift cards?
I also live in Cleveland, and have bought the Giant Eagle gift cards, but how do you get the $6-$12 off gas? I was only offered the $.20 per gallon off gas for each $50 spent.
@Lostie:
You have to actually manually activate the bonus category earnings but you can do that up until halfway through the last month of that quarter and still be eligible
Shoprite requires you to buy gift cards with cash in my area
@Lostie: when you sign up they’ll ask you if you wanna activate q3 you have until
two weeks from the end of each quarter to activate
Is there an easy way to tell how much you have spent on the bonus categories already for the quarter? I am paging through transactions on the Chase website, but that is very manual and not very exact.
I want to apply for the freedom card. should i apply for the visa or mastercard? are there any difference?
does groceries mean any small grocery or just that groceries that are listed?
@Lostie:
You can register for Q3 until 09/14/12.
@Marilyn:
20 cents off per gallon for 30 gallon is $6 of free gas for buying $50 of gift cards or $12 of free gas for buying $100.
@Johnb102:
Try using Chase Blueprint if you don’t want to do a manual count.
@RR:
No difference.
@booky:
Small groceries do count.
Most of the gift cards at grocery stores have a charge, like $3.75 or something. And they are usually in small denominations. So what’s the big deal?
can i buy a 1500$ gift card in a gas station to that gas company and get 5x points for that
