im always wondering. how do you sign up for more than one credit card at a time?
@sara:
Use IE, Firefox, and Chrome to apply simultaneously and typically get just one credit hit.
Dan – which of the cards would you recommend as the 3 to apply for? This would be my first cards towards building travel points.
@Aaron:
Do you have any credit cards yet?
can continental miles and united be put together for an international flight?
Yes. I have a Discover, BOA World Points AMEX, Citi Thank You and Citi World. I use mostly the Discover and the BOA. Al are over 5 years old and no new cards over the past 3 or 4 years.
@Joseph Levy:
Sure!
@Aaron:
You’re a prime candidate for an app-o-rama then!
I would do a 3BM (3 browser method) Continental, Sapphire, and your choice of United or Freedom if you also have a Chase checking account or can open a Chase checking account.
Then pick 3 AMEX cards (Starwood consumer, Starwood business, Delta, Platinum, etc, etc) and do a 3BM there as well soon after the Chase 3BM.
You can also do the same with Citi.
Then map out your free round-the-world trip!
Question – If I sign up now for the Continental, and then message Chase customer service, will I get 50K miles after my first purchase? Just want to be sure the 50K doesn’t include the 10K or 5K bonus shown in the application screen.
Also, we each have 4 Chase cards already, with the last one gotten 9 months ago (BA Visa). Will we have an issue doing a few applications at once (3 browser method). We each have a high credit score, 775ish.
@JS:
You get 25K for opening the card, 5K for adding a free additional used on the application, and then by sending a secure message people have been getting another 20K, for a total of 50K.
I have more than double that amount of Chase cards, but the worst case is you don’t get approved automatically and you call up reconsideration to get cards approved and credit lines shifted over from other cards that you can keep open or close in the process.
Do you have to give the social security number of the additional used? and if I added my wife and my wife added me, would either of those hits hit our credit?
@JS:
No social is needed for an additional user.
No hard credit pull is done for additional users.
@yitz:
Call the other recon lines, like credit analyst, etc, until you find a rep willing to move around credit or close an older card in exchange for approving the Freedom card.
Dan,
Per your suggestion, I applied using the 2BM for the Continental OnePass and United Explorer cards. United Explorer was pursuant to an invitation by mail.
Got a “Thank you for applying for the Continental Airlines MasterCard/United Explorer Cards from Chase, etc.
Not sure why I did not get instant approval at least on the targeted one. I have the Sapphire Preferred and Ink Bold cards.
Should I call immediately for manual approval or do I just wait it out? If you recommend calling, do I call the regular reconsideration line
Thanks
@Al:
Targeted offers do not help you get approved in any way, it’s just like any other application.
I usually wait it out for a couple weeks, but others like to call right away. There’s no right answer to that question.
I called the number on the invitation, not the reconsideration line. We didn’t get into the specifics of my application, however, when I mentioned having a good score and other Chase products, she stated the Continental and United cards are considered merged and you cannot get both. Looks like they are not going to let me get both and the 50k for each.
@Al:
Call back to reconsideration or credit analyst.
Explain that you would like to use your Continental card at Sams Club which only takes Mastercard and your United card at the Dollar Store (Deals, Family Dollar, etc) which only take Visa.
They can approve you for both cards.
I got the continetal offer in the mail and it says it expires on the 15th of feb..
Dan
Citi 50k mile AA card signup bonus I believe ends today.
Dan, in your response to JS above you said that people got 20K for sending a secure message. what kind of message does it have to be and how do i do it? and are you talking about continental one pass or one pass plus? (i already have the one pass card)
Thanks for your help Dan. I applied for the Continental, United and Saphire cards. Got an instant approval for Saphire and a pending decision for the other two – message was to hear back from them in within 10 days. Hope to hear good news on both.
Dan, do you suggest that it’s a good idea to close my chase sapphire preferred card and then reopen it in order to get the sign up bonus again? can i do it similarly with other cards?
thanks for your time
Dan,
Don’t you think this is a problem:
“United MileagePlus Explorer cardmembers will only receive one 25,000 bonus miles award if they apply for both the United Explorer Card and the Continental OnePass Plus Card after 7/19/2011.”
@CO offer:
Good to know, hopefully the card will be around at least until then.

@Aaron:
Good luck!
@esther12:
I don’t close cards.
I apply for new cards and get them approved by moving credit lines over from older cards.
@Al:
And cards also say that bonuses are limited to first-time cardholders…
As long as you still have separate mileage numbers (and new numbers if you have applied in the past) you’ll be fine.
Hi Dan,
In the 3BM if I use two computers can I use chrome twice since IE is so slow, or it does not matter it has to be 3 different browsers.Thanks
@Dan: Dan, please clarify to a newcomer to this. You’re saying to open up IE, Firefox and Chrome at once – ok, then i apply on each one to another credit card – though it’s clearly not exactly the same exact time, no? but what? since it’s ALMOST simultaneously so it’ll be CONSIDERED the same time and therefore will only get one hit??? AM I READING YOU CORRECTLY? And doing 3 applications just back to back in Firefox, say would not do the trick? I apologize for my ignorance and appreciate your patience. I believe i am missing something pretty obvious here.
Thanks a lot
Dan, is it too late to apply for the Continental business card that offers 25000 miles? or is it no longer available and considered merged with the UA card?
Thanks!
Dan if you move the cfredit line over, how do you avoid the annual fee once it posts?
On Flyertalk people are saying that Chase cards can’t be used with the 3 browser trick (they’re also saying you can only do 2 cards, not 3, though from your posts I assume this must be wrong). Can you please clarify.
Will applying for a business card (Chase Ink) and a regular card still get just one hit, or 2?
Dan – I heard back from chase and was approved for the sapphire code but denied for the one pass continental card and the united visa. I received a letter for each that the reason for not approving was due to “Too many requests for credit or opened accounts with us”. I did all 3 using the 3BM method. Is there anything I can do to get those 2 cards approved? For the sapphire code I was given a 12k credit limit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@Aaron:
Call reconsideration.
What’s the best way to explain the 3 card application? Explain the miles or ignore that and try to get them to move some of my credit from the sapphire card? Just want to have the right game plan. Thanks.
@Aaron:
Ignore that and explain the benefits of each card you want and why you want that card.
Tried the reconsideration line but was told that since I am new to Chase they don’t have enough spending history to see how I handle their cards. I then explained the benefits of each card and why I want them and she then asked if I would like one of the cards more than the other. Was then put on hold for few minutes but she came back and said they still are can’t approve at this time. Is this it or can I try again and call back? Do they keep a record of all calls made to that line? Will it hurt my credit score or my ability to get other cards in the future? Thanks.
@Aaron:
If you got 12K on Sapphire you should be able to move that around to get more of them approved.
Try to just get one more card approved at a time and why you would really like to have that card.
Just call back and consider trying another number, like the credit analyst number, etc.
