June 2019 will forever be remembered of the month of Qantas. I won’t rehash the posts, you can read them above. Though I probably should try to roundup all of the information again into one post…
I noted in this post that one con of using Qantas points is that you can’t book a last minute award ticket for travel on the same day of booking.
Qantas seemingly has been actively working this entire month to fix every problem that I point out, including erroneous taxes and the ability to book El Al flights from Boston and Miami. I’ve been impressed at the speed of these fixes.
And now DDF member wakinike points out that they now allow same-day award bookings so you can book a last-minute trip with your Qantas points!
Several readers asked for a Qantas and El Al comparison chart with taxes included, so I’ve made that chart as well.
Here is a comparison for how many points you’ll need with Qantas (regularly or during a transfer promo period like the current one) or with El Al Matmid.
There are 2 of these charts below. Chart #1 is the old chart, which is valid for the current pricing on premium economy and business class awards. This chart has the old higher pricing for economy, which is no longer applicable.
Chart #2 is the new chart, which is valid for the current pricing in economy and will be valid for future pricing on premium economy and business class awards starting on 9/18.
In other words, if you want to book round-trip travel from NYC to Tel Aviv before 9/18 for travel anytime in the next year, you’ll need 75.6K Qantas points in economy, 126K in premium economy, or 156K in business.
If you transfer points from AMEX with a 44% bonus that means you’ll need about 52.5K points in economy, 87.5K points in premium economy, or 108,333 points in business class. If you need a one-way ticket now you’ll need 26,250 points in economy, 43,750 points for premium economy, or 54,167 points for business class.
If you want to book round-trip travel from NYC to Tel Aviv as of 9/18, you’ll need 75.6K Qantas points in economy, 141.6K in premium economy, or 180K in business. That’s a 10% decrease from previous economy rates, a 12.4% increase in premium economy, and an 11.5% increase in business class.
If you transfer points from AMEX with a 44% bonus now and want to hold that for future use, you’ll need to transfer about 52.5K points in economy, 98,333 points in premium economy, or 125K points in business class. If you need a one-way ticket for future use you’ll need to transfer about 26,250 points in economy, 49,167 points for premium economy, or 62.5K points during the current promo for business class.
- You will need to round-up to their nearest 500 points for AMEX transfers to Qantas.
- The chart below includes rates for round-trip travel, though both programs allow for one-way travel at half of the round-trip rate.
- The first 3 columns are Qantas rates based on no bonus, a 20% bonus, or a 44% bonus. The taxes will be same for these 3 columns. The 4th column are the rates for AMEX points transferred into El Al Matmid.

“another day, another Qantas post”
Not a joke anymore.
If only the US carriers were this good about program improvements…
Qantas marketing: “Hey guys, Dan hasn’t posted about us today, what can we do?”
ROFL!!!
how would you rate/compare the nonstop saver award space between el al and United nyc-tlc economy?
Hey dan why didn’t I get the HT for this. I posted it on ddf a few hours back..
You did. You’re mentioned in the post itself and it was added to your DDF profile.
Oh great. I was looking fwd to that HT lol my first
Maybe they want to go ahead and add first class redemption options for LY (as long as therye still around…)
1)Does Qantas charge fuel surcharges on flights from nyc to Europe like BA does for AA flights?
2) If I transfer 2MM , miles am I going to get 30%+20%?
It seems you can book China Eastern via Qantas. However, it shows Economy, Premium Economy, and First.
1) How would I know if they charge surcharges
2) Is “First” actually first or it’s really China Eastern business?
dan would you say award space with el al much better than United?
I wouldn’t do the same day ticket with them, Booked one on Tuesday night for a wed afternoon flight & we arrived for check in, they stated sorry your ticket is not confirmed but we do see a reservation, so we called Qantas & waited on hold for a rep for over an hour and half, at that time was to late for check in for the flight.
Qantas Claimed El Al lied, El Al basically was throwing the blame on Qantas.
In the end we spent money for a ticket on the same flight
Qantas Just apologized and said to bad, your loss.
@Dan Any recourse available?
Did you have an infant with you?
Always critical to make sure your have an eticket number, no matter who you book with.
Yes , had an infant & it was a premium economy ticket
Having an infant means they have to manually ticket it so that’s what did it. You should have texted them to expedite the ticketing in that case if you saw there was no eticket number.
I didn’t know that, But thanks for the heads up for the future.
Is there any recourse for the mess up?
If I have a Marriott Amex card do those points also get the 44% bonus?
You had written that if you used Quantas points to fly Cathay Pacific to Israel you could have a stopover in Hong Kong for a few day at no extra charge. When I called, they told me the flight to Israel would be about 37,000 points but if I stayed in Hong Kong it wuld be 53,000 to Hong Kong and another 53,000 to Israel. How can I get the free stopover?
hi dan i’d like to share you info there’s now nothing availability between the NY TLV and back route with Qantas can you figure or advise whats going on their system i transferred more than million points to Qantas i’m very afraid about it
