Update: The new award chart will go into effect 9/17 at 10am EDT. Book your premium cabin award tickets now before rates go up! For example, a one-way NYC-Tel Aviv business class ticket on El Al will go up from 78K to 90K points.

For years I ignored the Qantas frequent flyer program. It was overpriced in both miles and fuel surcharges and didn’t have good transfer options.
In recent times though they have aggressively added transfer options as AMEX, Barclays, Capital One, Citi, and Marriott can all transfer points to Qantas. They also added the ability to book El Al awards, which have good availability, but have been tied to the poorly managed and very overpriced Matmid program.
The Australian Business Traveler has a rundown of Qantas program changes.
In short:
- Qantas has added new partners in Air New Zealand, China Airlines, Bangkok Airways, and Air France/KLM Flying Blue, though some of those are restricted to select routes.
- They are also lowering fuel surcharges on their own flights starting on 9/18.
- They have released new Qantas and partner award charts here.
- Economy prices have been lowered effective immediately.
- Premium, business, and first class prices will go up starting on 9/18. They justify the increases with the reduced fuel surcharges, but as they never collected fuel surcharges on El Al there is only a devaluation at hand.
- Qantas is also adding additional award space on their own metal. The best way to book awards for Qantas flights is actually with Alaska miles, followed by American miles and hopefully that additional award space will be available to those programs as well.
- Qantas is adding a lifetime Platinum level.
- The coolest addition is that in December Qantas will start a points club that will be awarding elite-style benefit program for people that earn at least 150K miles from non-flying earnings and there will be higher tiers in this program as well. Let’s hope this starts a trend among other airlines!
On the one hand, some of these devaluations make it pretty pricey for awards. On the one hand I’m just happy that they still have award charts. The trend these days is to get rid of award charts and switch to dynamic pricing and things certainly could have been much worse.
Luckily, the 44% (or more!) stacking transfer bonus from AMEX to Qantas is still working! Now that we know Qantas’ plans you can make an educated decision about whether to transfer points for El Al travel.
You can read this post for all about the Qantas program and redeeming on El Al.
Here is a look at what is changing.
Here is the old Qantas partner award chart:
Here is the interim Qantas partner award chart with the reduced economy prices:
Here is the future Qantas partner award chart effective 9/18 with the increased premium cabin pricing:
Sample destinations to/from Tel Aviv:
- Zone 1: Larnaca
- Zone 2: Athens, Sofia
- Zone 3: London, Madrid, Moscow, Paris, Venice, Warsaw, Zurich
- Zone 4: Mumbai
- Zone 5: Bangkok, Beijing, Johannesburg
- Zone 6: Boston, Hong Kong, JFK, Newark, Toronto, Tokyo
- Zone 7: Chicago, Miami
- Zone 8: Los Angeles, San Francisco
Here is a comparison for how many points you’ll need with Qantas (regularly or during a transfer promo period) or with El Al Matmid.
There are 2 of these charts below. Chart #1 is the old chart, which is valid for the current pricing on premium economy and business class awards. This chart has the old higher pricing for economy, which is no longer applicable.
Chart #2 is the new chart, which is valid for the current pricing in economy and will be valid for future pricing on premium economy and business class awards starting on 9/18.
In other words, if you want to book round-trip travel from NYC to Tel Aviv before 9/18 for travel anytime in the next year, you’ll need 75.6K Qantas points in economy, 126K in premium economy, or 156K in business.
If you transfer points from AMEX with a 44% bonus that means you’ll need about 52.5K points in economy, 87.5K points in premium economy, or 108,333 points in business class. If you need a one-way ticket now you’ll need 26,250 points in economy, 43,750 points for premium economy, or 54,167 points for business class.
If you want to book round-trip travel from NYC to Tel Aviv as of 9/18, you’ll need 75.6K Qantas points in economy, 141.6K in premium economy, or 180K in business. That’s a 10% decrease from previous economy rates, a 12.4% increase in premium economy, and an 11.5% increase in business class.
If you transfer points from AMEX with a 44% bonus now and want to hold that for future use, you’ll need to transfer about 52.5K points in economy, 98,333 points in premium economy, or 125K points in business class. If you need a one-way ticket for future use you’ll need to transfer about 26,250 points in economy, 49,167 points for premium economy, or 62.5K points during the current promo for business class.
- You will need to round-up to their nearest 500 points for AMEX transfers to Qantas.
- The chart below includes rates for round-trip travel, though both programs allow for one-way travel at half of the round-trip rate.

Should i book a flight asap with points and pay for possible cancellation or wait 6 months to book
You can change a Qantas award for a fee of 5K points or cancel a Qantas award for a fee of 6K points.
If i book reward flight for my wife an I. Do i need to pay 5k change fee for each flight? Or only pay one 5k change fee because the two flight on the same itinerary?
Hey Dan! Thanx for the amazing breakdown. I wana go next summer to Israel. I will be ready to book by Feb. You think I should transfer now?
Might want to consider booking before 9/18.
You can change a Qantas award for a fee of 5K points or cancel a Qantas award for a fee of 6K points.
I am wanting to book the economy.
So I wouldn’t need to book before 9/18, no?
I am willing to transfer now though to lock in the 44%
Correct. I’d transfer now.
Thank you!
I pulled the trigger!
@dan you can add that all routes are now bookable online. #DDeffect?
Not all. BOM – TLV isn’t bookable online.
thanks!
what about “earning” miles from Elal to qantas
With no plan for future travels is it worth to Transfer 125K and get the 44% bonus or just pay the 180K when I’m ready. Question really is being that things can change in so many ways (from ELAL’s part and qantas) is it worth locking up Amex points in qantas.
I wouldn’t without any plans.
As a data point I transferred Amex points on Wednesday. Bonus miles posted Thursday but only 20 percent, not 24.
Ymmv? Or now 20 instead of 24?
500*1.2=600
600*1.2=720
500*1.44=720
Oops. Never mind. 44 percent effective cumulative bonus.
All good!
If you make a ticket now but change dates after the miles go up, will you have to pay the higher prices?
Also, is there a limit on how much of a bonus you can get from both amex & Qantas for the extra bonus miles?
Thanks.
Odds are that changes will be at the higher rate, but I’m not positive.
No limit for the bonus.
Thanks for the info.
but is qantas valauble if i’m not flying to israel? is it worth transferring to use for domestic/international flights e.g. on AA?
There are better options for most other flights.
True, but now you can get a domestic flight for 44% cheaper.
Also, they are the best option for last minute flights that include a stopover.
There’s no award chart in that link for PG?
TBD
If i flew qantas am i able to claim mileage with aa?
Yes.
Dan do you know what the rates and routes for AF will be? And when will it start?
TBD
The surcharge is being removed only with elal direct flight, not with any other flight to isreal with a stop.
El Al flights never had fuel surcharges.
Am I missing something, to me it seems that economy pricing is lower! From NYC to tlv Instead of 42k u now need only 37.5k, sounds awesome to me!
Did you read the post??
Given the big difference in mileage and availability between NY and Miami in business class, might be worth getting a NY-TLV ticket through Qantas and then booking a MIA-NY ticket separately.
What airlines nowadays will interline your bags with LY?
Certainly not worth taking a stop for that.
Thanks. I did the transfer as a trial and I did get the 44%. I’m thinking if getting the round the world fare for 150k. (Which with the bonus is a great deal)
is it possible to book one way business and one way economy for the same price
“The chart below includes rates for round-trip travel, though both programs allow for one-way travel at half of the round-trip rate.”
I see a domestic award flight on aa (with stopover) but not on qantas should I call them ?
You see it where? Does BA have it?
lga to mia 7/8 on AA with stopover not on BA
Hi Dan, Thanks for this amazing update.
I booked 4 award tickets with qantas as one family reservation. I would like to cancel, will i be charged 6k fee once or 4 times for each person?
6K per person.
Dan. How long do you think until ElAl pulls the plug on this.
I think this will last.
Dan
I cannot figure it out, Is any fees added to the miles with Qantas using ELAL flights?
I’m trying to book award tickets and they’re charging me almost $95/premium economy and $57/economy ticket in fees! Why so high?
Transferred miles june 21 and as of now only received amex bonus not Qantas bonus.
How long is it supposed to take?
The Qantas bonus takes up to 5 days.
Just transfered AMEX point and was given only a 20% bonus
The Qantas bonus takes up to 5 days.
55,000 AMEX points gave me 66,000 Qantas points
The Qantas bonus takes up to 5 days.
Would love if you updated the post showing that the bonus is not still valid, as this is a post originally from June – Or am I wrong?
yea it seems like that 44% is till working based on what you highlighted in this post?
44% bonus still works?
No
Just a “tiny” update. Capital One is offering a 33% transfer bonus right now to Qantas.
Effectively, it’s 1:1 transfer from Capital One to Qantas.
did anyone get that 15% targeted extra points in July, after stacking 44% from qantas that dan spoke about?did anyone have any luck getting an already flown flights miles back if they paid 42 for economy each way, instead of 37,500? If someone can please contribute their dps, i would appreciate it. I am trying to claw back qantas points on a few round trip tickets booked at 42.5 a way, and have been unsuccessful so far.
With regard to the actual booking, what is the information you need to submit in order for the ticket to be issued and how do I submit it?
bad availability it becomes almost impossible to get a seat NYC-TLV route in biz hope should someone announce more about it ppl needs to know before transferring
I do transfer 1.5x points but I get stuck with now no availability
I agree. Availability is getting worse and worse. More than that, Elal does not open all it point availability to Qantas. A flight with point availability on Elal will not necessarily be available on Qantas. I totally regret transferring so many miles from amex.
Does Qantas have any availability on LY Business class anymore for TLV-JFK or EWR?
Yes, but it’s limited.
Just booked business class for august 7 from ewr to tlv for 90k
