Hertz massively devalued their points yesterday without providing any advance notice.
I reached out to Daily Getaways as they are selling Hertz points next week and the advertised amounts would no longer be enough points for a week rental or weekend rental. In fact Hertz killed their weekend award chart completely.
They responded,
“Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have confirmed with Hertz that there have indeed been recent changes to the Hertz rewards program that have affected the published redemptions. Hertz is committed to honoring all published offers to ensure its members never experience a disruption in satisfaction. They have increased the number of points for each Daily Getaways while keeping the same great price to ensure these deals uphold the highest value for travelers.”
And sure enough the packages have now been updated:
- The $280 “One Week Standard Rental” package will include 7.5K points (3.73cpp) instead of 5.5K points (5.09cpp).
- The $560 “Weekend Prestige Collection” package will include 20K points (2.8cpp) instead of 13.2K points (4.24cpp).
- The $698 “One Week Prestige Collection” package will include 25K points (2.79cpp) instead of 16.5K points (4.23cpp).
I asked if there would be any make-good offer for people who bought Hertz packages in the past that are no longer valid for the originally advertised length of rental and got this response,
“The updates to our 2019 Hertz offers are to ensure the value communicated for this year’s offer were in line to with redemptions reflected in their updated program. If you have purchased points previously and have not used them prior to the updates, then the current redemptions would apply. We cannot retroactively update past offers each time a brand updates their loyalty program, which happens often.”
As I always say, never buy points unless you have plans to use them in the short-term as devaluations will be sure to eventually wipe out the value.
And don’t hoard your points as they surely won’t appreciate in value.
That advice surely applies to Hertz as the worst sort of devaluation is one done with zero advance notice. That erodes all faith in the value of the program.
Will you still try to buy Hertz points next week?

Why hertz changeing everything up now..:
(silver lining) Technically if you were buying the 16.5k package so that you get a six week premium rental you are now getting a better deal

Best line of their email made me ROFL:
“Hertz is committed to honoring all published offers to ensure its members never experience a disruption in satisfaction.”
What does ”standard rental” mean? A standard size vehicle?
Do the points have to be used for a one week rental or once they have been deposited into my account I could do what I want with them?
You can do what you want with them.
in general on a hertz rewards rental it cost the same amount of points up to a full size (e.g. toyota camry) premium and higher have different rates
What about a minivan?
