Activate Your Q1 Chase Freedom 5% Categories Linky
Chase Freedom Linky-Earn $200 cash back (in the form of 20,000 Ultimate Rewards points) when you spend $500 in 3 months. There is no annual fee for Freedom!
Everyone has been having success sending a secure message to Chase to get matched to a $300 (in the form of 30,000 points) offer after getting the card! Just be sure to send the request within 3 months of getting the card.
For 01/01/12-03/31/12 the 5 point categories are for all spending at Amazon.com and Gas stations!
Here is the 5% calendar for the rest of 2012:
Q2: Grocery stores and movie theaters
Q3: Gas stations and restaurants
Q4: Hotels, airlines, Best Buy, and Kohl’s.
You earn 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 of spending per quarter.
Although they are called “5% categories” you really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be cashed out for 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending you will earn at least 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points.
However if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Bold card then you can transfer the points over to one of those cards and then transfer them at a 1:1 ratio into much more valuable airline miles (United, British Airways, Southwest, etc) or hotel points (Hyatt, etc).
Have any Chase checking account as well? You qualify for Chase Exclusives which gives you even more bonus points!
You will earn:
-10% bonus points on top of all base points earned.
-10 bonus points for every transaction you make.
And that’s on top of points for spending in 1% and 5% categories!
If you have a Sam’s Club nearby they’re great-they don’t cut you off even if you make multiple purchases on the same card at the same pump!
That means 5 points per dollar this quarter, plus 10% bonus base points, and 10 points for each pump! It just became fun to buy gas again!

Does Chase Freedom apply to Sapphire Preferred cards?
@bklyncpa: no chase freedom is a different card
Hi Dan i applied for chase one pass, and for UA card one i got approved and for UA i called recon, and they r asking me why i need both as they r one airline. any help what to answer pls , because i don’t want to lose the 50k points. and the promo expires 2012
@gevaldig:
Sams club stores (not gas stations) only take mastercard or discover.
Most dollar stores only take Visa.
@Dan: the problem is i also have the sapphire preferred card, and that’s a visa.
@gevaldig:
But you want to use your precious United Visa there. If you’re not convinced you need the card you won’t convince recon you need it, that’s for sure.
hey dan, i got my 50k ultimate rewards after 3 months and i wanted to thank you! also, which card do you think i should have them switch it to in order to get another round of bonus points. these 54k points i plan on selling for 1.4 cents each..thanks again!
Dan,
Will amazon payments qualify for the 5%? An extra $75 ($1500*5%) on my monthly transfer will be nice.
Although this is not entirely related to your thread, I just wanted to thank you dan, for your previous post that reminded us to ask to be matched to 50,000 miles with united and continental. I was just given an additional 40,000 miles between the two cards!
Thanks,
Chez
any way to get 5% on amazon.com chase credit card?
Dan,
I applied for the INK Bold. I got denied. When i called they told me i have no credit history with Experian. Ive had Credit cards for years. I dont know how this is possible. I also have the Saphire preferred (Approved for $35k) and regular Saphire approved for $8k. They said i dont have those long enough.
What could have happened to my credit history?
Is it worth another hit on my credit to have them look at Transunion?
What do i do to find out what happened to my credit history? I checked my FICO score 6 months ago and i had an 800 rating. Thank you!
continued from previous: I also bank with Chase for 4 years-personal and business- and have been a good customer keeping high balances in the accounts.
Dan
does costco gas qualify for the 5% back?
as dan suggested i applied for the ae platinum card in the summer i am now disputing with them to give me the 25k signup which they claimed i was not entitled to, by the way my husband applied at the same time and he got his.luckily i found your original link which i copied and had to fax to the customer service division[they are not allowed e mails]!!!!!!!
lets see how that plays out but they are not getting away with this ,then i will cancel it.
i applied for a sapphire preferred and want to get another card with a good signup bonus but nothing looks very appealing i wanted brittish air but offer is no longer available how about ae blue sky 22.500 bonus no fee,and continental-united?
Dan,
Do you get 10% bonus on the 5 points categories? From previous months it doesn’t look like it.
I signed up with dans link for the freedom card and got the 20K signup bonus, I sent a secure message to to chase asking them to match the 25k-30k signup and within minutes there was an additonal 10K UR in my account. Thanks Dan (great tips on the DDForum hope your all in there)
@yehuda:
You should be able to get more than that for them.
@steve:
No.
@chez:
Congrats!
@yanky:
No.
@Mark:
Call recon and have them move credit lines around to approve more cards.
@bec:
Costco only takes AMEX.
@Mike:
Yes get 10% on top of base spending only.
Spend $10 on gas and you’ll get 61 total points.
@Joel L.:
Congrats to you as well!
Will amazon payments work?

@jay
@shlomo
Steve asked the same question and Dan answered him.
Look up and you will find the answer.

The post suggest buying some gift cards now to get bonus points. I noticed that if you already have UR points, you can pick up a $25 Amazon.com gift card on sale now for 2250 points. Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems this is a better deal.
For example, if you start with 2250 UR points and redeem them for a $25 gift card, you end up with 0 points.
However, if you start with 2250 points and buy a $25 gift card using your Freedom card to pay for it, you end up with 2413 points (2250 + 125 + 25 + 3 + 10). Now you still need to earn another 87 points to have enough to trade in to recoup the $25 you spent.
@Jay:
No.
@atq:
No.
@Shlomo:
No.
@hunch:
Lol.
@David R:
That has got the be the strangest math I’ve ever laid eyes on…and on Pi day no less!
Using 2,250 UR points for a $25 Amazon GC (1.1 cents per point) would be a terrible deal as those points are worth at least 1.7 cents each if not much more than that when put to good use in a mileage program.
On the other hand earning 5 points per dollar (plus a 10% and 10 point bonus for checking customers) on Amazon gift cards is an excellent deal.
