Value of Southwest points
The value of Southwest points is variable based on the paid fare.
If you’ll redeem points for an average of 1.65 cents each, that makes a 60K signup bonus worth $990. If you qualify for a companion pass that number can double to a whopping $1,980 signup bonus.
For example:
- A one-way Los Angeles-San Francisco nonstop flight on 1/8 is $48.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,524 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,524 points gets you a value of $43.38 ($48.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.72 cents (43.38/2,524) per point.
- A one-way Newark-Ft. Lauderdale nonstop flight on 1/29 is $50.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,669 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,669 points gets you a value of $45.38 ($50.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.7 cents (47.38/2,669) per point.
- A one-way Phiuladelphia-Orlando nonstop flight on 1/15 is $50.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,669 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,669 points gets you a value of $45.38 ($50.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.7 cents (47.38/2,669) per point.
- A one-way LaGuardia-Chicago nonstop flight on 1/15 is $52.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,814 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,814 points gets you a value of $47.38 ($52.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.68 cents (47.38/2,814) per point.
- A one-way LaGuardia-Fort Lauderdale nonstop flight on 1/13 is $93.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 5,789 points plus $5.60 tax. So 5,644 points gets you a value of $88.38 ($93.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.53 cents (88.38/5,789) per point.
- A one-way LaGuardia-Denver nonstop flight on 1/13 is $90.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 5,571 points plus $5.60 tax. So 5,789 points gets you a value of $85.38 ($90.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.53 cents (85.38/5,571) per point.
- A one-way Newark-San Diego nonstop flight on 1/13 is $128.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 8,329 points plus $5.60 tax. So 8,329 points gets you a value of $123.38 ($128.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.48 cents (123.38/8,329) per point.
Annual travel credit
If you have the Priority card you’ll get reimbursed for $75 in annual spending on Southwest flights! Between the Priority card’s annual 7.5K point bonus and the annual travel credit, you’ll get about $200 of Southwest travel every year, more than covering the card’s annual fee.
Upgraded boarding certificates
If you have the Priority card you’ll get reimbursed for 4 annual purchases of upgraded A1-A15 boarding positions so that you can get some of the best seats on the plane. Southwest is increasing these fees so that thsy cost $15-$25 per leg, so this is a benefit worth up to $100 per year.
20% cash back on in-flight purchases
If you have the Priority card you’ll get 20% cash back on top of points for purchases of drinks, messaging, movies, and Wi-Fi on Southwest flights!
Free changes and cancellations. Lock in low fares with no penalty
While other mileage currencies charge up to $200 to cancel an award ticket, Southwest continues to allow you to cancel an award flight and redeposit the points in your account for future use without any penalties.
Coupled with 2 free carry-ons and 2 free checked bags per person, that’s a lot of added value. A family of 4 needing to cancel award tickets on another airline would set you back $400-$800 versus it being a free change on Southwest. A family of 4 checking 2 bags each would run $560 round-trip on another airline versus paying nothing on Southwest.
Thinking of taking a trip but not 100% sure about it? With Southwest points you can lock in a good rate and just cancel the trip free of charge at any point before the flight if you can’t make it!
You can use the points for yourself or book award tickets for anyone else you want to give a ticket to.
Southwest allows you to redeem points for any seat on any flight. There are no blackout dates or capacity controls.
When Southwest has a fare sale the amount of points go on sale as well as it tracks to the price of the ticket. Best of all Southwest will refund your points if the price of your award ticket falls! Just rebook your trip online for the same dates or give them a call for the credit.
Southwest points will never expire as long as you earn points every 24 months.
Don’t fly? Redeem for gift cards!
You can also use 60,000 points to get $600 worth of gift cards to places like Alamo, Amazon, Avis, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Bloomingdales, Brooks Brothers, Budget, Carnival Cruises, Express, Fairmont, Gap, Hertz, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, National, Nike, Saks, Sea World, Shutterfly, Staples, Starbucks, Target, The Children’s Place, TJMaxx, Walmart, Zappos and more.
Companion pass and A-List Status
You can get a free companion pass if you earn 110,000 points in a year from select sources, including earnings from credit card signups and credit card spending! If you earn 110,000 Southwest points in 2019 the pass will be good until 12/31/20. The pass allows you to bring a companion with you for free whenever you fly Southwest, even if you are flying on a free ticket! That effectively doubles the value of your Southwest points. There is no limit to the number of free companion flights that you can take.
You’ll want to hold off on meeting the spending threshold so that the card signup bonus points post to your account in 2019 in order that the companion pass will expire at the end of 2020.
While Chase no longer allows you to signup for a consumer Southwest card if you already have one, you can signup for a business Southwest card even if you have a consumer Southwest card open.
Or, you can always put items like federal taxes on a Southwest card to help hit the spending you would need to hit 110K points earned in a year. You’ll pay a 1.87% processing fee, but if you take advantage of the points earned from spending and the companion pass free travel that can be worthwhile.
The Southwest Priority card also earns 1,500 tier points towards A-List status for every $10,000 spent. You can earn a maximum of 15,000 tier points annually. You can learn more about A-List status here.
Cash back on top of points
Chase business cards in the chart above are eligible for additional cash back via Visa Savings Edge. That means you can get points plus 2% cash back at Chevron, Sheetz, AutoZone, or Texaco. You’ll earn points plus 3% cash back at Boost Mobile. You’ll earn points plus 4% cash back at Alamo, National, and MGM hotels. You’ll earn points plus 5% cash back at Lenovo and Wyndham hotels.
Business card information, benefits, and 5/24
2 of the cards in the chart above are business cards, but you may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can open a business credit card for “Joe Smith” as the business. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that. Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field.
It’s important to just write your own name as the business name if you are just applying for your own small business as a Sole Proprietorship that doesn’t have any business paperwork.
All of the cards in this post are subject to 5/24 restrictions, read more about that here.
However, it’s important to note that business cards from most banks, including Chase business cards, do not get added to your 5/24 count of recently opened cards. That’s because business cards from most banks don’t show up on your personal credit report and the 5/24 count is based off of your personal credit report.
If you’re like me and you run more than one business, you can signup for multiple of the same card for each business to manage each businesses expenses separately.
You can receive a signup bonus on each card once every 24 months for each business that you manage.
You can apply for a business card under your own name and under a business name. That would provide enough signup bonus points to earn a companion pass!
Another benefit of business cards not reporting on your personal credit report is that your credit score won’t be hurt when you spend money on your cards. When you spend money on personal cards your score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. That’s because a whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization, so you lose lots of points even if you pay your bills before the statement due date. You can pay off your credit card bill before your statement close date to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On business cards from banks like AMEX and Chase the spending is not reported on your personal credit report, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. That also means if you close the card, it won’t have an effect on your credit score.
As always, Southwest benefits include:
- 2 free checked bags per passenger.
- No change fees to switch your flight. Whether you are on a paid or an award flight you can change without penalty!
- No cancellation fee to cancel your flight (you will get Southwest credit for the full amount paid, even on non-refundable wanna get away fares) or to cancel and redeposit your award flight.
- A refund of the fare or point difference if the price of your flight goes down after you buy it, just call to get the credit at any time before your flight!
Will you signup for any Southwest cards?

Did the 20k bonus points for spending $11k just come out? I signed up my in-laws a couple of weeks ago and my wife yesterday. Thanks Dan!!
Yes, this limited time offer just came out today.
Under 5/24.
Applied and was approved for southwest premiere and plus (personal) in June 2017.
Any way to get 2 cards now (I know I can get 1 business) in order to get companion?
If you got the SWA Plus card in 12/17 for 40k bonus are you still eligible for these cards?
I opened this card a few months ago and used the points for three RT tickets from EWR to FLL this January. It will be my final hurrah with the airline as there won’t be any more nonstops this route beyond April.
Would be nice if there were more nonstop flights from my part of the US; Michigan. Almost nothing I’d use is nonstop.
Dave, which airport are you referring to, Detroit? Looks like SW has about a half a dozen destinations, but I understand that you probably aren’t looking to travel to St. Louis or Nashville. Delta has had a grab hold in Detroit for a while now, I recall when I lived in Cincinnati how they manipulated the high airfares there and drove competition away, to eventually dropping their hub like a hot potato. Being that Detroit is more or less stagnant (same 32 ish million passenger volume as year 2000) I can’t imagine Delta being loyal there forever. But I could be wrong.
Yes, I am referring to Detroit. Most affordable flights out of DTW to the east coast where I travel alot, is with American. I never flew Delta 🙂
So you’re surmising that SW may possibly add more direct flights from Detroit?? As you mentioned; right now, there’s almost nothing that helps me.
Probably not so convenient if you need to go to BOS or NYC. WN (Southwest) does fly to ATL and BWI though out of DTW.
Any idea of how long this bonus will last?
Hopefully less than 4 hours…
Is it risky to do a 2bm for consumer and business card?
Is there a limit on how often you can get the bonus?
Can I cancel my consumer southwest card and just reapply?
once every 24 months
How often can we open these cards and receive the bonus?
Can I open one and my wife another one to count for 110k for the companion pass?
Dan,
I spoke to a rep and they told me that if I do cancel a card and re-apply, in order to be eligible I need to have not received a bonus in 24 months, AND ALSO I would also have to wait 4-6 weeks after cancelling my card (so the cancellation gets reported to credit bureaus) to be eligible for the new signup bonus.
Is that accurate, or was she misinformed?
@dan Movies messaging etc are now free on southwest…so no need to use the card for 20% off inflight for those
Can I open the business card and then the consumer card? And will both cards count towards tge companion pass?
Yes.
Yes.
Do I need to open the business card first or order doesnt matter??
on my 4th year of companion pass
I don’t spend nearly as much as required to get the bonus points. Can you please suggest a few creative ways to meet the spending requirements?
Dan, does the biz card have the 48-mo restriction? or the restriction applies to only personal/consumer cards? TIA
Can you transfer a balance instead of making purchases on a new card?
Do i need to earn all the 110k in a calendar or just reach the 110k point?? Basically I currently have 50k points would i get the companion pass if I get the 60k from signup?
Thanx
Needs to be earned in a calendar year.
Thanx DAn!
Just to be clear.
I should sign up now but don’t finish the spending that will give he bonus points until 2019 or does all the spending have to be in 2019?
The bonus points are given on the statement after you complete the spending.
A bit new to this.
Should I apply for the business and consumer simultaneously to avoid a double credit check on my social?
Do i get the bonus 20k points as soon as i spend 11000 or only after 12 months?
On the statement after you finish the spending.
I am 20K miles short of a companion pass on my personal card. Any suggestions to finding those extra miles. I am prepaying taxes etc. If I open biz card will the bonus post by 12/31 to the same rapid rewards?
If you book a flight and cancel you’ll receive a credit good for a year from the date of booking. You’ll earn double points because it was a southwest purchase and you can use the credit over the year. Keep in mind the credit is nontransferrable to another person. So if you plan on traveling with your family book then each a ticket and cancel.
Hey Dan, Would applying simultaneously in different browsers enable one to get two consumer cards? It’s worked for me before when I was at 4/24, but not sure if this would be different. And would the answer be the same for CSR/CSP under their new rule?
Thanks so much!
DAN
Please respond to Michael. It would be helpful info
Thanks
Thanks jp!
Would really appreciate your input Dan! 🙂
Hi Dan,
So I can get 109,000 for example in 2018, and January 1, I can hit 110,000 then I’ll have it through 2020?
No, all 110K must be earned in the same calendar year.
Do the points have to be earned by one person? Or can my wife and I each earn 60k pts?
One person.
If we both have the same RR#, would that work?
Hi Dan, just to clarify regarding the bonus. My closing date on the SW card is the 4th of the month. Any purchases from Dec 5 and on will close on Jan 4 2019 and I will get the bonus on Jan 4, even though the payment due date for that Jan 4 closing will be Feb 1. In other words, my account is credited with the bonus on the period closing date, not the payment due date. Thanks!
Correct, though it will take a few days until it posts.
Thank you Dan! With thanks to you my wife and I have enjoyed amazing vacations and the ability to fly all around. These next 2 years will bring our Companion Pass run to 7 years (with one year overlap of us each having one)! Thank you!
how?
Does point transfer count towards the 110K miles for a companion pass?
No. Only flights, purchases on sw cc or bonuses earned on sw cc.
I’ve earned a companion pass through California promotion last year. I have close to 60,000 points and would get a companion again if I was approved for another card. I’ve tried getting a consumer card from the list here and got denied: the reasoning was “you already have similar type of consumer card” (even though it’s a different card).
Any way around it? What if I cancel the current card I have, will I be able to get a new consumer card soon enough ?
I’m confused. To get the companion pass I would need to spend another 50K at 1 point/dollar? So 60 k point bonus + 50k spending = 110 to get companion?
Or open a consumer and business card.
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the article!
Was wondering if the anniversary points add to the 110k?
Yes.
If I have the Consumer plus, can I upgrade to the consumer priority for the extra benefits?
I understand that I won’t receive the sign up bonus?
Yes.
is southwest points worth anything for ney york to israel travel?
@dan: If i have Priority card already, can i get the 60K bonus for Plus card?
Unlikely to be approved for another consumer card at the same time as having an active one.
need 4500 more points by dec 26 to get companion pass. ideas – pls help?
Spend on the credit card?
Can’t spend that much so fast.
If I use th miles throughout the year does it still count for the companion pass?
Yes.
Just applied for both. One was approved and one was not. Reason given was that you cannot have 2 Chase personal Southwest cards at the same time. Told them I needed 2 cards to separate expenses. They still said no. They will allow you to open a buisness and a personal. PS if you apply on a SW plane or in the airport they give you an initial 50,000 on both products. A
I am 30k points short of my companion pass and my bill posts on december 22. i have partner points with spg, can I use them to get the companion pass?
Can I open a Business Premier Card for my regular business and then another business premier card for a business as sole proprietorship and receive another 60k sign up bonus?
Yes.
Thanks a lot for the quick respons!!! And will both count towards companion pass?
Thanks!
Yes.
Just for tour info, I got 2 cards 1 for a legitimate business with a tax id the other as a sole proprietary ans after all the spending I got the 60k for the firs card and then received a letter in the mail that I won’t get tbe 60k on the second card cuz I took already advantage of the offer
Note: If you have a ink preferred card, sapphire preferred or a sapphire reserve you can transfer Chase points to Southwest. That’s a value of 1.65 cents per Chase point top that off with a companion pass and that value doubles. If you have the Chase trifecta you could earn 5 points per dollar with the freedom card transfer them to Southwest and that’s essentially 10 points per with the companion pass or 16.5 cents per dollar!
Any idea if one is one more likely to get approved if applying either in an airport at a SWA credit card booth/Southwest flight compared to thru the Chase/SWA website? They’re offering 50K for the consumer cards with a spending threshold of only $2K.
If I already have a personal premier card and just opened a business card, any way to open up a third or downgrade the premier I’m order to get companion pass?
When I apply for a Sole Proprietorship card should I write at the business name “Joe Smith” or “Joe Smith Sole Proprietorship
Thanks
Joe Smith
Are these deals expiring any time soon?
Can I sign my wife up for a business card with my RR# & then sign up my business on another card with my RR# as well?
@Dan,
Since Chase won’t allow you to signup for a consumer Southwest card if you already have one, how can I get two bonuses if I don’t have a business? It seems like I’m stuck at 60K, no?
Are they under the 5/24 rule?
Read the post.
@Dan,
Since Chase won’t allow you to signup for a consumer Southwest card if you already have one, how can I get two bonuses if I don’t have a business? It seems like I’m stuck at 60K, no?
Start selling items on ebay to get a business.
Thanks! wouldnt that just take care of one Biz card? I do not have an a Biz EIN so i would use my own SS as the Tax EIN as a Sole Prop – would I be able to open a diff biz card with same EIN to captur two bonuses?
I got the ink business cart a year ago and I use it all the time. But, I missed the signup bonus (Doh!). If I sign up for another one, can I get the bonus?
I am going to apply for the InkCash card but I don’t see anywhere in the terms that it has the 50k signup bonus. Is that still available?
Yes.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/reader-question-chase-ink-card-apply/
What is the normal sign-up bonus? If it is 50K for 1K spend on the consumer then I would prefer that then the current bonus.
40K
I closed my consumer card a few days ago (got it more than 24 months ago). Can I apply for another one now or do I have to wait for the final statement to close even though the card is closed? Thanks!
You can apply now.
Last time My husband signed up for a s.w. biz card and they made us send in our s-corp letter. He eventually was approved but it was a hassle. Is that typical? Also are the business cards always 60k? Or will that offer lower after today? Thanks
If you apply with the business name as your name then you don’t need business documents.
60K is a limited time offer, but the end date for the business offer is not known.
Thank you!
@Dan Which two would you sign up for today? The Business Premier, and Consumer Premier?
i had the business card in the past where is the best place to check when i received my sign up bonus as you cant get it again with in 24 months..
Hi Dan, If I open a business and consumer card can I combine the bonus miles to get the Companion pass?
How can i sign up to 2 at once (consumer and business) without them pulling a credit report twice?
can i get approved for both bus & personal same day/
Any idea why on the my previous 2 statements the closing date was on the fourth and points were transferred on the 5th, now i hit the $2k spend on 1/1/19 statement closed with chase but not getting any points to SW even the spend let alone the signup.
Dan. I have all the southwest cards except for
The Newer Priority card. Can I get that even though I already have the other cards over the past 24 months or is it each type of card gets its own 24 Months
