On 4/17 I made a Starwood-Marriott FAQ page and wrote that SPG Golds who matched to Marriott Gold would remain Gold when the programs begin to merge in August.
However, several other bloggers wrote that they were told that SPG Golds who matched to Marriott Gold would receive Platinum status in August. The Marriott merger page was vague on the issue, but it seemed to me like they were wrong. However after the Australian Business Traveler quoted Marriott as saying that SPG Golds who matched to Marriott Gold would receive Platinum status I made a post about Marriott’s contradictory statements on the issue.
Marriott has now updated their own FAQs as follows,
“I already linked my SPG and Rewards accounts. what will happen to my matched elite status in august?
SPG Members:
- SPG Gold (10 stays/25 nights) is status matched to Rewards Gold (50 nights) and in August will be Gold Elite (25 nights)
- SPG Platinum (25 stays/50 nights) is status matched to Rewards Platinum (75 nights) and in August will be Platinum Elite (50 nights)
Marriott Rewards Members:
- Rewards Gold (50 nights) is status matched to SPG Gold (10 stays/25 nights) and in August will be Platinum Elite (50 nights)
- Rewards Platinum (75 nights) is status matched to SPG Platinum (25 stays/50 nights) and in August will be Platinum Premier Elite(75 nights)”
In other words: Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
If you have SPG Gold matched to Marriott Gold, you will only be Gold in the new program. Worse yet, that’s a midyear downgrade for existing SPG Golds as they currently get 4pm late checkout, but will only get 2pm late checkout with the new program.
If you do have an AMEX Platinum card and currently have SPG and Marriott Rewards Gold, you will continue to be Gold in the new program.
If you earned Marriott Gold or Starwood Platinum without a status match then you will be Platinum in the new program. If you earned Marriott Platinum without a status match then you will be Platinum Premier in the new program.

What this quote means?
“In other words: Do not pass go, do not collect $200.”
Never played Monopoly before?

“If you do have an AMEX Platinum card and currently have SPG and Marriott Rewards Gold, you will continue to be Gold in the new program.”
Is this only for accounts that will be gold b4 August through the Platinum card, or can I still get the gold privilege through the Platinum card if I sign up after August.
You will still get it afterward.
What about SPG Gold for Life
Will be Gold for life in the new program.
What if you were to apply for the Ritz Carlton card which comes with Marriott Gold? Will you become Platinum after August 1st and keep the lounge access and 4pm checkout?
Yes, but only until January.
What if I earned Marriott gold from ritz Carlton cc?
Platinum through January.
even if I spent the 10k to earn gold for next year?
If I earn gold through spg and status match to rewards gold – how many nights would I need to become platinum?
Im so confused, im currently SPG gold, not sure how but have been that way for years, have no status by Marriott, do i do anything now?
Match it to Marriott Gold now.
I had platinum card and beacuse of it I have SPG GOLD and Marriott GOLD. I have cancelled card about two weeks ago and I am still SPG gold and Marriott Gold. Is this a glitch or they will take away the SPG Gold at some time?
They might, but for me it’s been “glitchy” for about 10 years or more (re: SPG).
I have a nonrefundable OTA booking for an Autograph Collection Hotel for mid August. I completed this booking weeks before Marriott announced the changes in Marriott Rewards. I made this booking because of my Marriott Gold status (status matched from SPG Gold), and because OTA booking at Marriott were eligible for elite benefits. And thus I could have access to lounge, and free breakfast. But considering this latest clarification, it seems I will not have access to lounge, and will not get free breakfast, despite what Marriott Rewards T&C promised at the time of booking. This looks like bait and switch to me.
Dan, what do you recommend me to do?
I canceled non-refundable reservations without penalty by calling Marriott Rewards. For a stay pre-August, I rebooked using points (for the benefits) while liquidating my points as there’s no benefit to hoard Marriott points as a new gold. For a stay post-August, I booked at a Hyatt.
I did not book directly with Marriott. Mine is a nonrefundable OTA booking.
If I am Marriott gold due to United 1k status what status in Marriott will i have in Aug
Platinum through January.
I am Currently Marriott Gold through my Amex Platinum. I am in the middle of the of a status match for Platinum. Assuming I hit the status before Aug., Under the new program will I become the Platinum Premier?
Yes.
If I have a 132nights this year with Marriott what status will I have ? And is there any benefit to having this many nights?
Depends if you spend $20K.
At the marriott or on cc? If I do than what status will I get
Marriott.
Platinum ambassador.
If I re-earn platinum before August with 25 stays (not with 50 nights)will that keep me platinum next year?
Yes.
The promise of lounge access as a Marriott Gold (matched from SPG Gold) was a great incentive to book full service Marriotts, but with that taken away, Marriott will surely lose lots of bookings to Hilton and Hyatt properties.
Tier name inflation.
I’ve stayed in the IHG/Hyatt world most of my life but my father is a Marriott guy, no experience with SPG and not a big points/miles guy. They had a tree fall on their house and just finished 5 months straight in a Residence Inn with a point total of about 650,000 and Platinum Elite status. I’ve tried to give him some tips on what to do with this whole merger to maximize redemptions and get the most out of his unfortunate situation. Any advice? Should he get a stay+fly certificate? Has the Marriott Visa card from chase…Thanks!
I am 260k points away from lifetime gold and I just cant ever find a reason to spend effort on Marriott cards to get there. Seems like more and more being taken away.
If I earn SPG Gold before August on number of stays, will I be gold for 2019? What if I don’t make 10 stays by August, am I out of luck if I don’t make 25 nights?
What if I got gold from the Ritz card will I become platinum
