Amazon Prime goes up from $99 to $119 tonight. Here’s how to lock in the $99 price.
Step 1. Buy a $99 Prime Gift Membership here. Send it to yourself and file it away in an email folder. You can always forward it to a friend as a gift. You can buy as many as you’d like, but you’ll have to buy them one at a time.
While regular Prime requires credit card payment, the Prime Gift membership allows the use of Amazon gift cards as payment, which means you can save even more on Prime! If you use a Ink Business Cash® Credit Card card to buy Amazon gift cards at Office Max/Depot or Staples stores you’ll earn a cool 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other business travel cards.
Or you can purchase Amazon gift cards from grocery stores and earn 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent this quarter with a Chase Freedom card. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!
Prime membership is taxed in most states, but with a gift card you can avoid those taxes, see this post for more details.
Step 2: A regular Prime membership is set to auto-renew. To use the Prime Gift Membership, you will need to set your Prime not to auto-renew.
To do so, click on this link and select “Do not continue” or select “End Membership and Benefits”
You will be asked if you want to end your Prime benefits. Select “End My Benefits.”
Click on “continue to cancel:”
Confirm that you want to end your benefits at the end of your membership that you have already paid for:
You will get a confirmation that your Prime membership will end on a future date:
Step 3: On the day after your Prime membership expires, click on the email with the subject “Congrats…you’ve got 12-months of Prime!” Click on “Start enjoying Prime” and you’ll have another year of Prime membership. If your membership expires on 6/30/18, just click on the email on 7/1/18 to get Prime through 6/30/19. If you order a 2nd gift membership you can click on that on 7/1/19 to have Prime through 7/1/20. If you order a 3rd gift membership you can click on that on 7/1/20 to have Prime through 7/1/21. Etc.
Decide that you no longer want Prime? You can convert the amount you paid back into an Amazon gift card by scrolling to the bottom of the email and locating the link in this paragraph:
Clicking that will credit your account the amount paid for Prime, including taxes paid:

Nice, hope they don’t catch this loophole soon.
Dan, a question outside this topic
I just had a company do a pull on my credit score to get me a preapproval letter for a house purchase. If I apply to a chase business credit card today, will this be counted as another pull on my credit score or a total of one since the pull happened on the same day?
Thanks
I’ve been doing this for years.
Separate pull.
What if I have a grandfathered family plan where I share my prime benefits with 4 family members? When I let my prime membership lapse, will this disable the grandfathered family feature?
It will, though at least one DDFer tried this and was able to get Amazon to add the grandfathered sharing back.

Anything for students to do to lock in $49.99?
No.
Just to confirm, this option won’t work with the grandfathered plan
Correct, though at least one DDFer tried this and was able to get Amazon to add the grandfathered sharing back.

1) what happens if I have grandfathered family plan?
2) I bought a gift of prime and was charged $7 tax. Is that normal? Amazon gcs never charge tax.
1. You would lose it, though at least one DDFer tried this and was able to get Amazon to add the grandfathered sharing back.

2. Prime is taxed in select states only and can be avoided by changing your default state. See this post for more info on that:
https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/amazon/amazon-prime-going-99-119-per-year-heres-can-lock-99-rate-future-years/
If you do convert to a gift card that the tax would convert as well.
There’s $8.79 in taxes…hardly worth it, only saving $11
Incorrect.
Prime is now taxed regardless of whether you use this method or the regular Prime method.
Note that tax can be avoided by changing your default state to a state with no tax on Prime. See this post for more info on that:

Thanks…I didn’t know it was taxed.
Dan, on another topic , I applied yesterday for both the ink preferred & the ink cash , both went pending , checked today and both got approved.
Anyway I can try to get matched the ink preferred to 100k ,
Can’t hurt to send a secure message to ask, but that offer is not open to the public, so don’t get your hopes up.
Alright.
What should I mention to them , just that I saw that there is available an in branch offer for 100k ?
Sure.
Dan,
If I do cancel & click the email link the day after, does my order history disappear if I use the same email/user name? What about saved payment options & delivery addresses?
Thanks
You don’t lose any of that stuff. Everything stays the same.
can i Buy a $99 Prime Gift Membership with a amazon prime reg gift card?
Yes.
Dan, you’re absolutely the best!
Any word on ebt prime?
Nope.
Thanks Dan for the clear point by point instruction for one who learns better with pictures than lotsa of words. Appreciate it!
YW!
Am i the only one thinking this…
when i click on the link, this is the message i get:
“Next Payment:
On January 23, 2019, you will be charged $99.00 for a year of Prime.”
It does NOT say you will be charged $99.00 OR THE PRIME MEMBERSHIP FEE ON THAT DATE.
I took a screen shot, and have every intention of arguing the above. I’ll still buy a gift membership, but will only have to use it Jan. 23, 2020.
Amazon has said that will be corrected.
Most likely CS will give you a credit if you complain, though be aware that to many complaints can cause a ban. Personally I wouldn’t bother when this method exists.
Can I purchase amazon gift cards from staples online with my chase ink or does it have to be in store?
They don’t sell Amazon GCs online.
Can you do a follow up on Beam Bank? I got invited to join but seems too sketchy.
Hi. Trying to take advantage of this. Cancelled my free trial and was having an error “your action cannot be completed because you are in the middle of a prime membership” so I called in and had them cancel my benefits now (not at the end of my trial). I got to the next part of my order and now, do not have an option to purchase more than 1. Anyone else having this issue? Looks like its a 1 per customer; giving you just the 1 year of prime. TIA
“You can buy as many as you’d like, but you’ll have to buy them one at a time.”
I’m wondering why they are charging me $1.91 tax in Florida?!??? Weird.
Finally, a benefit to living in Illinois!
If I cancel my membership just to reopen it the following day, will I be able to access my previous amazon purchases?
Thanks
Of course.
Dan, does this work for a business prime membership?
No clue.
Can you buy Amazon gift cards on Ink online? I don’t see them on Staples or Office Max websites.
Nope, that’s why I wrote stores.
I have a grandfathered family plan, does pay to loose it to take advantage of this?
I don’t share my account with others, i just have multiple accounts for myself to be able to take advantage of 1 time offers.
What’s my benefit of keeping the grandfathered plan?
if you use Uber Credit card, they will refund your prime membership – at least a portion of it
I don’t know if it was mentioned but i managed to buy 3 prime memberships for $93.62 each but switching the State as Dan mentioned and using my Amazon card with the 5% cash back. So with the $5 cash back and the $8.63 in tax, i am saving over $13 on top of the $20 price increase for Prime. Am i doing this right or am i missing something?

How many accounts are you sharing it with?
The current Amazon Prime shares full benefits with 2 accounts.

Depends how much use you get out of them.
Dan, my account says it’s renewing on 6/17/18 for $99? Will the amount change after tomorrow?
Correct.
Can I purchase prime/ gift card for future years, but not active it?
I currently don’t have prime at the moment.
For now it would be cheaper to get prime monthly via ebt.
Yes.
I was already on a trial of Prime and didn’t cancel it before trying this. It didn’t cancel my trial and said that I would be charged $99.00 on June 1, 2018. It also didn’t provide the option to cancel auto-renew so I guess I’ll have to keep a hard lookout for the next “You Have Prime!” email. I didn’t use the gift cards thing because I already have an Amazon Points credit card. I did get charged the horribly high sales taxes of my home state, but I think of that as the price of doing business here.
Can we just add the prime gift card to extend our current subscription?
Thanks for posting this Dan! Do we need to cancel our auto renew on prime tod2or can it be done whenever our prime is set to renew (in 2919)?
Thanks
Dan, is there a specific day the gift membership should be sent? Gift of Prime offers you the option of scheduling the email, and in fact I’ve heard it ought to be for the day after one’s membership lapses. It seems like these gift memberships have no expiration date, so the email could be scheduled for any day, even tomorrow?
Thanks!
Do I have to wait until the day after my Prime expires to use the gift membership ? Or can I do it on the day of expires
