Update: The 3x offer is now dead.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® is part of my Chase Quadfecta that will be even more useful after the Starwood AMEX gets downgraded on 8/1 from earning 3 Marriott points per dollar to 2 Marriott points per dollar.
Read the Chase Quadfecta post to learn all about the cards mentioned below in this post.
The standard Chase Freedom Unlimited® offer is now 15k points 17.5K points ($175 given in the form of more valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points) after spending $500 in 3 months and adding a free additional user card.
Another Chase Freedom Unlimited® offer now available has no signup bonus, but allows you to earn 3 points per dollar on everything for 1 year and 2.5K points for adding a free additional user card. You can’t convert from other cards to get this offer.
Freedom Unlimited normally earns 1.5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on everything.
Which offer should you signup for?
That depends on how much you’ll spend. You’ll need to spend more than $10,000 in non-bonus everyday spending during your first year for the 3 points per dollar card to be more valuable than the regular signup offer.
However it will also depend on what other cards you have. Chase allows you to convert between Sapphire, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Sapphire Reserve, Freedom, and Freedom Unlimited as often as you want.
Note that all of those cards are subject to Chase 5/24.
A post comparing the Sapphire cards can be found here.
Either of those cards can be converted to a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited down the line. My Freedom and Freedom Unlimited cards all were opened as Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card s. Plus, whenever possible I try using cards like Chase Freedom and Ink Business Cash® Credit Card to earn 5 points per dollar on bonus spending categories for everything from gift cards for Amazon from office supply stores, to Visa/Mastercard gift cards on sale from office supply stores, to gas stations and grocery stores on Freedom during bonus quarters.
If you spend $1,500 per month on non-bonused everyday spending, that’s $18,000 in a year. Even if you earn 3 points per dollar with the new Freedom card offer, that pales in comparison to the signup bonus on a Sapphire card, plus the 1.5 points per dollar you can earn on Freedom Unlimited after you reach the signup bonus threshold.
However, if you will spend more than approximately $35,000 in your first year in non-bonused everyday spending, then you can do better with this new Freedom Unlimited offer.
It’s worth noting that until 8/1, my everyday spending is going on my Starwood cards to earn an effective 3 Marriott points per dollar spent before that goes down to 2 points per dollar in August. Starpoints themselves will become more valuable than ever for a window from August through January, so it makes sense to build up your balances now while you still can via the Starwood AMEX or by buying Starpoints on what could be their final sale ever.
That would mean that it’s worth waiting until closer to August to apply for an offer like this one as you only earn 3 points per dollar for 12 months from when you apply for the card, though we don’t know if this is a limited time offer or not…
What is your everyday spending strategy?

Off topic, dan how Long after does AA business Citi card drop off your history after you close your account, it’s been almost 3 years but tried signing up a few times after and they denied me , I don’t have business using my ss#
Got a mailing with no 24 month language
Thanks
What are they denying you for?
The AA business card , they keep saying I had it before
Think even though I cancelled it was still somehow on my profile
Sounds like you may have closed the card but not the associated master business account. Reach out and see if you can close your master business account entirely before trying again.
If you have a Sapphire Reserve then you can’t get a SP, right?
You would have to convert it to a Freedom card first.
But chase points transfer to marriot anyway so isn’t it better to just get 3x Chase which are more flexible
But it’s wasting several months of the “12 month” signup period when you can just use an SPG card.
Is there a way for past customers to take advantage of this offer. Like by downgrading etc..
Or for new applications only?
New only.
Can one downgrade and get this 3 point for first year offer?
No.
It should be pointed out that they are not allowing “Product Changes” from Sapphire to this new Freedom Unlimited 3% as that is for NEW CARDMEMBER OFFER only.
Unless, HUCA works ? Dan ?
If I recently got the Freedom Unlimited, can I change it to the reg Freedom and take advantage of this new offer?
Should work, though would only make sense if you spend enough to make it worthwhile vs applying for a Sapphire card, etc.
nice. eventhough i would have received a bonus for the card already recently?
If i canceled a CSP 2 years ago, received a bonus on a CSR 1 year ago, am I eligible for a bonus on a new CSP? Or not because I received a CSR bonus 1 year ago?
You would need to wait another year.
Will I get 3x the points if I change from Freedom to Freedom unlimited?
No.
Do I need to apple for the new card in order to get 3x points or I can change my existing Freedom to the Freedom Unlimited to get the 3x points?
Is the Chase Freedom Unlimited a Business card or a personal card ?
Personal.
Off topic sorta- I have a Marriott Visa card should I transfer my points from there to my new SPG card that I just applied for? Will I get more value out of the points that way?
They’ll all be combined either way in August.
Hey Dan, I have a question about “Authorize User”. I am way over 5/24 and there is no way for me to obtain this nice card. But my mother has rooms so she can apply for this card. Can I still be AU under her account?
Yes.
Beginner in need of help!!
Where is the best place for an illiterate ignoramus in the credit card universe to start reading about which cards to open and what the benefits mean/transform into real cash? and what would be the single best card (personal or business) to open for a beginner that wont be swiping thousands of dollars monthly?
Do you only care about cash and not travel?
yes
Another beginner in need of help!
Where can I read up on best ways to accumulate points….? I have SPG and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards, open to adding cards. Thanks!
Hi After applying for the Marriott card and getting approved they mailed me the card and after activating it. I came to use it the next day and the card was not working I called chase and they said that they decided to terminate there relationship and closed the account. Is there anything I can do since I was mailed and offer to apply for the card which I did and this lead to me having a hard pull on my credit which I got approved but they closed my account before I was not able to take part in the sign up bonus. Is it worth fighting or suing them for closing the account after they approved the next day after I activated the card. Thanks
Did you ask them to remove the hard pull?
How do I do that is there a special department or just the general number on the back of the card.
Thanks
I’d start there.
I don’t understand why earning 1 starpoint/dollar is such a big deal. Rather, getting 1.5 UR pt/dollar by CFU, or 2 MR pt/dollar by Amex Blue Business is a much better deal and neither card has an annual fee.
Normally that’s true.
But Starpoints will be quite valuable, especially from August-January, you can definitely get more value from 1 Starpoints than 1.5 UR/2MR in that window.
And it will be hard to accumulate them after 8/1, making now the last few months where it will make sense.
are there foreign transaction fees on the freeedom cards?
3%.
Chase Sapphire Bonus only once in two years??
Is that true??
Yes.
Can I sign up for a Chase Sapphire Preferred AND the Chase Freedom Unlimited if I know I will hit the spending amount to get the bonus on both? I don’t have either.
Yes.
If I’m an authorized user on my wife’s CSP will I get the bonus when I open my own CSP card? Also does being added as an AU count toward the 5/24 rule?
Sure.
Sort of: https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/524-day-5-chase-cards-worth-considering-that-arent-affected-by-524/
She just got the card within past few months and we have joint chase account
Random q. Can u compare the capital one Venture to the chase Sapphire Reserve. Why don’t I ever see anyone talking abt the venture card?
Because it’s not a good card?
why not? I see some of the credit card websites have it being comparable to the sapphire
Any website comparing the two is doing so purely to sell you on applying for the card since they make money on the referral.
Hi I am a senior citizen who needs points for hotels and airlines
My jet blue master card was just hacked so I need to start using another card
I do have an spg card with no more points
Do you suggest I open a new card and if so which one???
after opening a csp/r, can i downgrade to freedom right away or need to wait a year?
what about upgrading from freedom to sapphire?
I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion on people having all their Chase accounts shutdown after applying for new cards with Chase. What have you heard? Any data points?
“You’ll need to spend more than $10,000 in non-bonus everyday spending during your first year for the 3 points per dollar card to be more valuable than the regular signup offer.” im struggling to understand how this makes sense thats 30k chase ur and the reg signup offer gives 17.5k ur?
And what does 10K in spending give you on the regular offer…
Hey Dan! Can I transfer the points I get with this chase freedom unlimited card to my chase ink preferred business card?
Yes
Hi Dan,
If I already have the CSP and was recently approved for the CFU, should I keep the 15k UR signup or switch to 3% back?
Does the spg card fall into the category of 5/24 bec I just opened an spg card and now I want to open the chase sapphire premier card and I want to get the bonus points
Why isn’t this a no-brainer? At 3 points per dollar, if you have a CSR, you get value of at least 4.5%.
Am I missing something?
As I wrote in the post, it depends on how much are you spending on everyday purchases per year and other factors.
Hi Dan, I downgrade my Sapphire Reserve about 4 month ago to a freedom unlimited. Can i now apply again for the Sapphire Reserve? I want my priority pass back!
Hi Dan! I applied for the Freedom Unlimited through the original new user offer of $150 cash back, but have yet to receive my new card. After I applied, I saw this new deal. I am a CSR and Freedom holder. Can I pick which startup offer to get, even if I applied under the last offer? I want to take advantage of the 3x points. Do you know if Chase will let me choose.
Thanks
Hi Dan,
Is it too late to get the bonus offer? I want to apply for a Freedom Unlimited and cancel my regular freedom (I have 2 and only use one). The representative said that if I open the unlimited and then consolidate credit with my regular before cancelling it it won’t affect my credit and I will get the bonus points. I would like to get the extra 2,500 if possible before I apply though. How can I do that. she said they only allow computer applications now and can’t apply over the phone.
Can I sign up for a Chase Saphire Preferred (with the 50k sign up bonus) with the plans to downgrade to a freedom unlimited in a few months if I already have a chase saphire and a chase saphire reserve?
It says:
“This product is available to you if you do not have this card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months.”
So do I have to wait 24 months from the first charge on my current card, or 24 months from the date the bonus hit? Also, do I need downgrade my existing Freedom Unlimited to a Freedom (or something else) before applying, or do I need to close it?
is there any way to get this now
Doesn’t seem like this offer still exists. I called CC services, they weren’t even aware of any such offer. @Dan any ideas?
It’s dead.
