Kangaroo at Angelsea Golf Club on the Great Ocean Road, outsideĀ Melbourne:
The stunning Great Ocean Road, outside Melbourne:
Back in 2010-2011 Mimi and I flew around the world on AAās defunct round-the-world award and for Australia we stopped off inĀ Melbourne,Ā Sydney, Tasmania, and the Whitsunday Islands. Truly an awesome country!
-3-5 days in Sydney would give you enough time to experience the phenomenal Park Hyatt, climb the Harbour bridge, check out the Opera House, pet some Koalas and Kangaroos, and have a day in the Blue Mountains.
-4-6 days in Melbourne would allow for a road tripĀ of the sublime Great Ocean Road and the breathtaking Grampians before going to to Malborune forĀ ShabbosĀ at the excellent Park Hyatt which is around the corner from a great Chabad House. A flight from Sydney to Melbourne isĀ 4.5K BA AviosĀ with no fuel surcharges.
-2-4 days in Hamilton Island or Cairns would give you time to snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef. If youāre based in Hamilton Island youāll also be able to checked out famous Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsunday Islands.Ā A flight from Sydney to Hamilton IslandĀ isĀ 7.5K BA AviosĀ with no fuel surcharges. Sydney to Cairns is 10K Avios.
-We spent 4 nights covering the entire beautiful island ofĀ Tasmania without realizing just how much driving that would entail. Doing over a week would have been ideal.Ā Ā A flight from Sydney to HobartĀ isĀ 4.5K BA AviosĀ with no fuel surcharges.
-We didnāt make it to more remote places like Uluru, Kangaroo Island, Perth, or the Australian Outback, but perhaps on a future trip?
Then againĀ 10K BA AviosĀ can alsoĀ get you from Sydney to New Zealand. Thatās been on my bucket list for a very long timeā¦

Abaility to upgrade to first with points or $$?
would love to know any upgrade options J or F or even Y+ with any means (miles, $$, anything else?). tickets booked into Q by the way. Anyone???
Is this a price mistake?
Yes.
who cares
Some people like to know if they don’t feel it’s yashrus to take advantage of these kind of things
mistake fare?? will they honor it? i’ve gotten a “booking in progress, will contact after confirming with airline” message.
Let us know š
I haven’t been able to get anywhere, I either get not flights available on priceline or fare alert change on chase UR
Can you change DOB after initial booking? Dont have other passenger dob.
DOB is meaningless, make it up.
I know that to Australia the verify before check in that you have a valid ETA, so it might make you issues in that regard, regarding the airline is as Dan wrote
Pretty darn cheap to Sydney as well…
Dates?
I only did Feb 11-21 priced at $306
Any way to skip the Dallas segment?
You must take the first DFW-LAX, but you can skip LAX-DFW at the end.
LAX-MEL-LAX-DAL is $640. pretty cheap for a nonstop flight from LAX to MEL.
if skip the lax-dfw will i lose all the miles from the other segments?
No.
also what will happen to my luggage am I able to get it at LAX on the way back
Everyone must pickup their luggage on LAX per federal law.
thats awesome, that would cut out about 3 hours of travel time on the way back. Now it would be really sweet if VA tickets my flights and there is some sort of schedule change that allows me to get an even better itinerary.
Can I fly from Los Angeles
the way going you need to take the flight from dallas but on the way back you can skip it
Booked!
First dates errored out, 2nd dates worked, thanks!
Priceline showed availability for 2/14 – 2/26 but I keep on on getting msg that they are unable to book flight:(
the price keeps jumping I think its dead?
Could be. Tried different dates?
How much are you finding for. the cheapest i found for $281
Search on Priceline.
$281 – too much. Should be $151!
Don’t think it ever worked. I have been booking from about 2 min after Dan tweeted and it works up to the payment screen then price jumps
Definitely worked. I booked for someone afterward.
I tried right after too, many different dates, price always jumped for me as well.
deal dead
I’ve gotten all the way through, including paying and then I get this “We were unable to book the flight you selected, but we’ve got more great options for you to choose from!”
price changed from 182 to 814 per person as I was about to pay
My booking is still in progress. Has anyone gotten a confirmation yet?
From Priceline Confirmation page:
Booking in Progress…
We’re currently confirming your tickets with the airline. Within the next four hours, we will update this page with your airline confirmation number, and send a confirmation email to
Says “confirming flight details” on the last page, for a minute now – any chance I get this to go through?
Not dead. Just booked on Priceline via app on phone
Nice!
Did yours also say Booking in Progress…
We’re currently confirming your tickets with the airline…?
Yes
It’s ‘pending’ with priceline.
Dead or No?
i booked and it says pending what dose that mean?
It means stay tuned š
Btw, thanks, Dan!!
Says booking in progress…
So first time booking a flight with an infant so need some help. I tried to book my 4month old as own seat but then it was showing me subpar options (i guess there were only 2 seats left on flight) so I booked just my wife and I. How do I add my infant as a lap child on the ticket, after already booking my ticket?
You can always call the airline before the to. However generally try will charge 10% of the price of the time you call
I booked three sep flights. All$280 for each)Thanks Dan!
Booked! Can I upgrade with Delta points or Money?
I just booked 2 tickets for May 9-11. It took a few tries, because fflights weāre selling out and prices going up. Didnāt seem like a mistake to me. Waiting for a confirmation email. Will let you know.
Anybody got Feb 11-20?
I may be going then.
took my CC info and passenger info…but could not execute conformation. Got a call from Webjet rep from India…asked if he could book for me. I said for the same price …SURE..go ahead…Sorry Sir… the price is more now…
sweet just booked 2 tickets, realized dates were bad and booked two more for the following week.
Both went all the way through to the pending/in progress page.
question is, should I cancel the first trip with the dates I didn’t like?
Or should I wait and see what happens in the next 24 hours?
What website did you book it on?
Priceline.
I just picked my seats..it shows “confirmed” seat numbers and says they’ll sent confirmation of my ticket within the next four hours….
why do you ask?
I booked one set of four tickets for 3/27-4/10 on Priceline.
Then I booked a second set of four tickets for 4/2-4/10 directly on Virgin Australia.
The latter is $298pp, but I already got ticket numbers for each reservation.
We’re more likely to go on the latter (shorter) trip, as it’s really hard to pull the kids out of school for an extra week. But credit my youngest, who said, “We can go during Pesach!”
O that was smart….I was in such a panic to after realizing I booked bad dates i just went with priceline..already having ticket number is definitely a good sign…
Is this really a good deal?
It’s “dead” now but you can still get tickets for like $350 on Virgin’s website….
Are you seeing that price on virgin Australia’s website?
Yup..at least I was..not at the comp anymore to check again
Any idea what typical flights are?
Just got $152.76 for May15-22. Also got the Booking in progress screen, but it did give me a Virgin pnr. Plugged it into my DL acct and presto, a DL pnr and all legs show confirmed. Could choose seats on DL metal but not VA.
Did you book on Virgin Australiaās website?
oops posted this below to wrong comment…
Took a few tries but I booked – five tickets for $1558 – insane !
Only after I booked did I realize that my flight also goes via Sydney and stops in LA overnight…. any way I can change this?
You can cancel and re-book within 24 hours. Just one problem, the cheap fares are DEAD now.
Did you book on Virgin Australia’s website?
no. i booked via priceline – dont think i can do a trip with kids
NYC – Dallas – LAX overnight – Syd – Mel
even though the price is SO good!!
If I donāt take the last leg (LAX-DFW), will that nullify my mileage accrual for all the prior legs?
No.
Dan, Delete/ignore my last question. I see you already answered it upthread. Sorry. And thank you, as always.
Not sure if I got a ticket or not… says its pending on my CC, and I got the insurance email that I bought with it, but no email from the airline with a confirmation number. Thoughts?
Please be advised that we are not able to fulfill your request for airline tickets due to the following reason(s):
Airline System Issue
To ensure that no charges have been made to your credit card, please call 1-800-340-0575 between 8:00am and 11:00pm ET to speak with a Travel Services representative.
Is this a message from Priceline?
Where did you book?
I booked with Orbitz , says on the itinerary no baggage, so it must be an extra cheap ticket
Thanks Dan
I can’t find a good deal on any dates. It’s 7:49 pm in Phx. Can anyone tell me dates that are currently working?
What is the consensus on driving on the other side of the road, I have never done it and am a little afraid that habit may kick in at the worst time
You’ll be nervous at first, but other than mixing up the turn signal and the windshield wipers you’ll be fine.
What would be the best way to upgrade to business class. I am SPG Gold with points. Does that even mean anything ?
I just joined velocity and can transfer points but I’m not sure if I can upgrade this way.
Thanks
I also got to the booking in progress screen on two different trips, with a VA PNR which I checked at the time and was able to see the complete (still unticketed) reservation on VA’s website. Just checked again though and now receiving an error on VA’s site when putting in that PNR. And on Priceline’s site, when I click through to get the full itinerary and receipt from the My Trips page, I get an error that this booking has no flight segments. Anybody else seeing this? š
Same here
Yes. It seems that priceline has no record of the flight, and my va confirmation code is bringing up an error message
Its canceled
Oh my- I’m so sorry- auto correct changed my words meant to say how can I book with no fuel charges- pls update the comment for me.
Got an email from priceline, thumbs down.
My priceline link isn’t working anymore, did they cancel this?
Just got an email from Priceline that they canāt fuilfill my request due to airline system issue…
Flights are all cancelled š
My two flights are still there. No email notification from Priceline (yet)
Are the people whose reservations are being cancelled only have PNR/Confirmation Number OR were they actually ticketed?
I haven’t seen any specific reports of ticketed flights being cancelled just yet.
How do i know if they r ticketed? My VA conf is still active.
OK. Follow up on my 2 May tickets for $450 total, including flight insurance. No email confirmation, but my AMEX was charged $412 to Virgin America. Should I call the airlines?
Second follow up on my 2 tickets in May. Priceline emailed me that the tickets didnāt go through due to a āfare filing mistake.ā They told me my AMEX hadnāt been charged. They also told me that their $45.50 fee hadnāt been charged on it either. Not true! Just finished talking to an AMEX agent who said it was just pending and he flagged it, the Priceline charge and the travel insurance charges.
Check to make sure you havenāt been charged if it falls through!
Does anyone know how to upgrade to business if you booked it on Priceline? I called Virgin but they bounced me to Priceline and Priceline bounced me back to Virgin. 16 hours in coach does not sound the most fun.
Thanks
I booked on VA, had ticket numbers…but decided to cancel.
They actually gave me a runaround about cancelling. Wanted to charge $400USD per ticket. That’s more than the fare itself, LOL. Eventually, they got “approval” to cancel, since it was within 24h. (Or maybe they went and realized those are the rules.)
Still pretty upset that I had to give up these tickets, though.
Booked tickets for 285 for Yeshiva week. Just received cancellation email ;(
We got an email stating “the booking has been rejected due to a fare filing issue”.
How do we know if it went through? Should I call them?
lesson: learned to always book with airline directly. š
In this case Priceline was significantly cheaper than the airline, hence why they didn’t get ticketed.
In most cases that isn’t an issue and Priceline gives you more time to think about the ticket and decide to cancel it than the airline does.
You win some and you lose some.
Exactly my point. Wasn’t worth risking saving $100 on a $281 total fare to get cancelled.
Dan,
Would you mind doing an update post if you hear anything official about these fares? Seems like anyone that was officially ticketed is good to go?
From the comments I’ve read here and elsewhere it appears those who booked the $250 to $300 fares through either VA’s site or through Expedia or Orbitz still have a valid itinerary. I booked through Expedia $275 (only because Priceline would error out on me) and my itinerary is still valid (for now). Maybe the early ones on Priceline also got ticketed but anyone late to the deal seems to have received the “fare filing issue” emails from PL.
I would love to know the Virgin’s official stance on these before I make any other plans. Thanks in advance!
[UPDATE] Just received an email today from Expedia. Virgin Australia cancelled my confirmed and ticketed itinerary. After over a week, I thought I was good and I even checked yesterday by clicking the email link and all looked good. But now it’s cancelled. Oh well, like Dan said, you win some and lose some.
Also got cancelation and already have flights booked from Miami to Dallas round trip, any ideas?
got a call yesterday from Delta telling me they were canceling it because it was human error… i mentioned im gold medallion….they said we will speak to manager …as of now still shows valid ticket…
I just got an email this morning saying my flight was canceled. The charge was already posted to my cc as it’s been almost 2 weeks- is there anything I can do to get it reinstated or my money back? I also booked a connecting flight on the LA deal dan posted.
File a DoT complaint
If you were confirmed and ticketed and then cancelled, file a complaint with DOT. I filed mine and they are more likely to force VA to compensate or give back the ticket if there are more people who do it. Make sure to attach the itinerary that it was confirmed and your e-ticket and then the email they sent (3 attachements). They are saying cancelling 9 days later is against DOT rules so join in people!

https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/reservations-fares-ticketing-fees
my ticket jan 21-28 booked through priceline billed by delta is still valid after they called me to cancel and i said i am gold medallion. just wondering if i will earn mqm’s since its a delta ticketed flight…
Been getting reports of Virgin honoring ticketed bookings. Any data points of people trying to chase Virgin successfuly?
Any Birthday’s coming up in the family? I need tickets to Australia for Pesach…
