Google Express is pretty awesome. Whenever we need an item from the grocery store or Costco we’ll just order it and have it the next morning! I’ve developed quite the habit for La Croix Grapefruit seltzer because of Google. Available stores vary by the region of your delivery address. 1. Google Express launched with a membership based model charging $99/year after a free trial. They would ship items found in local stores with free overnight shipping.
Marc Lore’s Jet.com tried a paid membership model and quickly removed the paid membership option, opting for a higher free shipping threshold and no membership fees.
And now Google Express is abandoning the paid membership model and will raise the free shipping threshold as well. If you paid for a membership, Google will send you a pro-rated refund. Free shipping will now require a $25 or $35 order from most stores.
2. Google Express will start selling items from Walmart stores starting next month. You can enroll here to get 20% off your first order from Walmart and be notified when Walmart items are available.
Looks like it will be Google and Walmart teaming up against Amazon…
3. While Google Express started with the premise that prices would be the same as stores charge, they are now charging more for Costco items in most regions.
I checked addresses in Brooklyn, Kansas City, LA, Miami, and Pittsburgh and found that Costco prices were higher than in-store prices.
However Costco prices were the same as they are in-store for orders shipped to Cleveland or Manhattan. Go figure.

It is cool that you can still use an AMEX at Costco with Google Express, as that allows you to take advantage of benefits like extended warranty, etc.

Ideally though, best bet to maximize the warranty is to purchase from Costco directly with their Costco Anywhere Visa Card, this then becomes in essence a 4 year warranty. Much better than using an Amex…
Except that AMEX warranties and return protections are significantly easier to deal with than other banks.

In amex times I bough on visa online at Costco and returned in store for cash.

Prices in my area jumped drastically. As much as 30% . they said prices are set by stores and there’s nothing to do about it. But as mentioned some areas still have cheaper prices….

As of a few days ago, I realized that Costco prices on Google Express went up, it seems that they upped the price of each product based on its weight / shipping cost.
Will Amazon drop or discount its Prime membership? Will Costco? Eventually…

I think this is probably the big story here.
I guess it remains to be seen how deep their partnership will go, but this could potentially kill the advantage Amazon has over Walmart on the technology side, e.g. drone delivery.
The main partnership story was teaming up to take market share away from Alexa. Google Assistant is light years ahead of Alexa.

Google Express is unable to calculate exact sales tax? Anyone else find that a bit shady?
From Google express help: “In most cases sales tax is determined by the location of the store. Since stores are not always located in your area, the tax charged on Google Express could be different from taxes you see at your local store. The “Estimated Tax” at checkout may include other applicable fees, and may be an overestimate”.
Recently, I was in a Costco and had a nice chat with a guy doing Google Fulfillment. Turns out that’s the only store doing fulfillment for a VERY LARGE chunk of LA. Watching them do their work, and thinking about the issues of getting around in LA, and getting around in a very busy Costco, I was left scratching my head trying to figure out how they make money on this. They guy told me he thought the Costco/Google Express partnership was going to go away in Sept/Oct because it was a big-time losing proposition. The efficiency of an Amazon warehouse and distirbution, vs. a Costco retail store are miles apart.
@dan, Costco to the Detroit area is priced the same. However, since the items ship from Illinois the sales tax is charged based on Illinois tax rate (%10) vs the Michigan rate. (%4). Take into account that Costco always charges sales tax on the full price – even for sale prices- and it’s sometimes worthwhile to make a trip to the local Costco.

Up until last week i was able to order the Costco 40 case 16.9 oz poland spring water, As well as 16 Bottle san pellegrino sparkling water and perrier.
beginning this week all water product except the 12 pack 1.5 litter poland spring water disappeared from the app.
i called google express customer service they couldnt tell me if something has changed. i called costco store in upper manhattan and they informed me google express is no longer being deliver from the manhattan store.
costco from google express was the cheapest way of getting water deliver do your door and it seems that option is gone.
