Google’s Project Fi is pretty awesome. Many people use it domestically, though I’m on a shared Verizon plan with unlimited everything for $30/month, so it’s not compelling for me to use in the USA.
But I use Project Fi extensively when traveling abroad. 4G LTE data is the same $10 per GB everywhere in over 135 countries. That’s a bargain for true high-speed data. You can make phone calls for 20 cents/minute or you can make phone calls over the data network with Google Voice. The line itself costs just 67 cents per day and you can place your plan and number on hold as needed. I’ve used it in places from Israel to Svalbard to the UAE. You can view supported countries here.

Would I need to be on WIFI to make calls using google voice? Also, does this work in Israel?

Verizon neutered TravelPass recently by limiting the 4G data to a paltry 512MB per day.
After that it slows down significantly.
With Project Fi you’ll continue to get 4G speeds.
Do you need to buy their phone?

It needs to be setup on select phones (I have a Nexus 6 that I bought on sale from Amazon).
People say after setup it will work on other phones, though I haven’t tried that yet.

Is there any way of getting Fi if you live in Israel?
I just went to the website and it says the service only works on Google smartphones.
Whats voice and data reliability? Are there times when no network is available – but would be available on regular cell? Im traveling to Europe does it ever use Network space – or is it mostly on wifi?
