The Blue for Business® Credit Card from American Express

The Blue for Business card is an excellent no annual fee card.

AMEX is back with another special limited time offer for this card.

You’ll earn 10K bonus Membership Rewards points after making any purchase within 3 months. Plus you’ll earn another 15K bonus Membership Rewards points for spending $5,000 within 6 months.

The Blue for Business card also always earns a 30% annual points bonus based on the past year’s purchases, so you’ll earn an effective 1.3 points per dollar spent everywhere.

Additionally all AMEX Membership Rewards cards earn 2 points per dollar on Uber. Thanks to the 30% annual points bonus that means you’ll earn 2.3 points per dollar on Uber.

All AMEX business cards also include Open Savings for 5% cash back at Fedex, Hertz, HP, and 800-Flowers on top of the regular 1.3 points per dollar earnings.

While the Blue for Business card can’t transfer points directly into miles, the points can be transferred into miles if you have a card like The Amex EveryDay Preferred Card, The Amex EveryDay Cardthe Premier Rewards Gold Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, or The Enhanced Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN.

That means if you hold a combination of the Everyday Card and the Blue for Business card you will have no annual fees, but can earn at least 1.3 real airline miles per dollar everywhere (and more on groceries and Uber).

If you have a Business Platinum card you’ll be able to redeem points earned on this card for at least 2 cents each on airfare. That means you can earn 2.6% back everywhere and 4.6% back on Uber.

AMEX business cards don’t appear on your credit report. That’s great for several reasons.

First of all they won’t count against your 5/24 count for opening new Chase cards. Only cards on your report that have been opened within the past 24 months count for that.

Second, when you spend money on personal cards your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card bill before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On an AMEX business card it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score.

Third, if you close a business card it won’t ever have an effect on your score.

You may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can just open a business credit card for “Joe Smith Sole Proprietorship” as the business. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that.
Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field.

Dumb

How does this compare to yesterdays?

ask

Same question as Dumb.

Abraham

What are the points worth if you don’t have any other Amex? Cashback?

Bobby

Does this offer work if you open a
additional user (employee card)

Moshe

Can i sign up if i dont have a buisness?

mareh

What if today’s is better for me then yesterday’s – will they honor this one after I was approved yesterday?

Steve

@mareh:
Tried that with the recent Startwood increased sign-up bonus. Just 2 days earlier I sign-up for the lower bonus. Amex would not match the new bonus. Chatted and called many times but they wouldn’t budge.

Isaac K.

Hmm. Rushed to get approved yesterday but I’d rather today’s sign-up bonus. Would they give me today’s instead?

Reuvenhunt

@all those concerned about being “stuck” with yesterday’s offer:

Just up your MSing skills.
MS $50k within 12 months with yesterday’s offer and you’ll net 10k + 50k*2.3 = 125k Amex MR points
With today’s offer, you’ll only have
10k + 15k + 50k*1.3 = 90k points

Reuvenhunt

And if $50k MSing seems intimidating, break even point is only at $15k MS

Isaac K.

@Reuvenhunt: Thanks. That’s a good point.

CtownBin

Hhmm, tough call about which offer is better. If you figure it without the restaurant incentive, the two offers break even after spending $15K on the card in a year in general spending. So it really depends on if you have that. Obviously 2.3 MR points is GREAT for Msing at places that aren’t bonus categories- like GiftCardMall online, etc, so it may be worth keeping yesterday’s offer and Msing to more than $15k in addition to regular spending. Plus, the 20,000 MR you can get for the restaurant spend- if you have a good way to spend $2,000 in restaurants in 6 months- definitely swings it to yesterday’s. But it’s close. They are probably trying to see which offer customers find more attractive.

DL

What should I replace Delta with? I am unsure if keeping it open for AF is worth it. using it mostly for offers. Suggestions?

DGS

Blue for Business offers only Membership Rewards Express points. MRE points cannot be redeemed for cash. MRE points can only be used for statement credits or to purchase gift card from the MR website. You must link a full MR earning Card like EDP, PRG, or Platinum to your Blue for Business in order for the points that you earn with it to be transferred to travel partners.

DGS

DL Don’t cancel your Delta Card if you don’t like the AF. Simply call the number on the back of your Card and request a PC to the no AF Hilton Card. That way it won’t hurt your utilization or your AAoA if your Delta Card is backdated a number of years.

DL

Would Hilton have similar offers to delta? I don’t need Hilton points
In terms of long term card I have several chase
And good credit score
Again, don’t want to pay AF
Paying 2 to chase and one Amex
Would eliminate one
My Amex has a few family on account so
Each offer is several
But still not worth the fee

With the 30% bonus, shouldn’t Uber be 2.6 points per dollar? You said 2.3.

chaya

can you please explain what this means?
