Get A 50% Bonus When You Transfer AMEX Points Into Avios

Normally 250 AMEX points transfers into 200 Avios. With this bonus 250 AMEX points transfers into 300 Avios. This promotion runs through 12/31.

The bonus is only available for transfers into Iberia Avios.

As you may recall from the “Everything You’ve Ever Wanted To Know About British Airways Avios” post, you can transfer British Airways Avios back and forth to Iberia Avios and Avios.com Avios. Each of those programs have different partner airlines and different award charts.

You can combine points via this link via the BA site. Sometimes that link doesn’t work so you can also try this link on the Iberia site to combine points.

There is no minimum transfer amount:

There are 2 caveats to combine points though:
1. Both accounts have to have been open for 90 days.
2. Both accounts must be active and received points. Transfers from AMEX or earning miles from other sources activate an account.

I’ve posted previously about Iberia Avios being a useful account to have, so hopefully you already have one from deals like this which gave free Iberia Avios.

If not you can open an Iberia account here.

AMEX transfers into BA Avios instantly, but transfers from AMEX into Iberia Avios can take a day or 2. Transfers between BA and Iberia are instant.

If you want to fly on Iberia to places like Europe or Israel you can save a fortune in fuel surcharges by transferring BA Avios to Iberia and using them on Iberia flights.

Assuming that you have an Iberia account older than 90 days you’ll be able to transfer points from AMEX MR to Iberia and then to BA at parity.

Here is the Iberia Avios award chart for travel on AA. Rates are for round-trips and are the same regardless of the number of connections:

And here is the BA Avios award chart for partner airlines. Rates are for each segment flown.

Note that using Iberia Avios are more complicated than BA. Their website is terrible and often requires calling to book. They also only have round-trip awards and you can’t make changes or cancel partner award travel. But you can save quite a few Avios if you’re persistent.

Of course this is all assuming you can find AA award space for your journey. Be sure to search before you transfer.

@dan. is this offer also good for spg points?

Dan

@w311:
No, but the ratios are fairly close.

20K SPG always gets 25K Avios. (Though there are much better uses for your SPG!)
It would take 21K AMEX for 25.2K Avios with this promo.

Jeff

Is this still good if I’m opening an account for both today? For domestic flights

Tammy

If I have a BA Avios account and opened an Iberia one a while ago though I never transferred any miles to it, can I still do it? And how? Thanks.

Hockera

250 to 300 is in reality only 20 percent more, i dont know if this is such a good deal

AD

For Canadians- RBC is giving 50% More Avios for points transferred before Dec. 17

Dan, or anyone with knowledg,

If I don’t have an Iberia account yet , and will open in order to get this promotion,
Will the transfer be unsuccessful ?
Or will it be without the bonus ?
Asking cause terms and condition by Amex offer doesn’t specify the 90 day term ,

Tnx

If I only have 38,000 amex points is this deal worth it or I should just transfer them to Singapore?

What is the optimal strategy if I want to avoid the BA Avios Chase card fee coming due in Fed 2017? I have had the card for 2 years and don’t see the benefit anymore now that I have accumulated a considerable amount of Avios points. Chase is telling me I can close due to consolidation and just move the credit line to another card which will have minimal adverse impact on my credit score. I’m being told there is no card to downgrade to without a fee. Is there any compelling reason to keep this card open? The free bag is a moot point since I only travel on BA internationally and get a free bag in those flights. What is your advice?
