does this really compare to 40 watts? not very bright

It’s a matter of personal preference. Daylight has a bluish tinge and is brighter and soft white has a yellowish tinge and is less bright.
40 watt is not bright at all
Soft white vs daylight is not a brightness thing. It’s strictly a color choice. White is for kitchen and work areas and soft white is more in line with th current light bulbs.
@40 watt: Wattage has nothing to do with brightness. Brightness is measured by Lumens.
