Starwood used to only allow a member to purchase 20K Starpoints per year. You can now purchase up to 30K Starpoints per year and you can receive 30K Starpoints per year as a gift purchase from another member.
Of course you can also buy more points for anyone living at your address and then transfer those points so that they’re all in the same account.
Starwood is offering 25% off purchases and gifts of 20K-30K Starpoints through 4/30.
20K Starpoints is on sale for $525Â instead of $700.
30K Starpoints is on sale for $787.50 instead of $1,050.
In other words you would be buying Starpoints at a cost of 2.625 cents per Starpoint.
There’s no reason to buy them speculatively at those rates. But it can make sense if you have a specific redemption in mind.
Say you want to stay at the category 7 S. Regis Bal Harbour from March 16-18. It’s just a few minute walk to The Shul and tons of kosher eateries in Surfside.
-The prepaid non-refundable SPG member exclusive rate comes out to $2,305.87 after tax or $1,152.94 per night.
-The refundable preferred rate comes out to $2,506.38 after tax or $1,253.19 per night.
-The refundable Starpoint rate is 60K for 2 nights. If you buy 60K Starpoints at 2.625 cents each that means you’ll have paid $1,575Â or $787.50Â per night.
-If you stay 5 nights the cost per night drops to 24K. If you buy 120K Starpoints for $3,150Â that means you’ll have paid $630Â per night.
-The refundable SPG Cash & Points rate is 30K plus $610.50 after tax or 15K plus $305.25 per night. If you buy 30K Starpoints at 2.625 cents each that means you’ll have paid $787.50 for the points plus $610.50 in cash+tax for a total of $1,398 for 2 nights or $699 per night.
-Starpoints can be an even better deal for upgraded rooms. At the S. Regis Bal Harbour you can redeem 31.5K points (or 15,750 points+$290) for a Grand luxe oceanfront roo. You can use 32.5K points (or 16,250 points+$315) for a Grand luxe oceanfront junior suite or Astor oceanfront junior suite. An Astor oceanfront junior suite goes for $1,561 after tax, so using 32.5K Starpoints is a great deal!
Too rich for your blood? Let’s take a look at the category 4, Four Points by Sheraton Miami Beach from March 18-20 for Shabbos. It’s a short walk from there to the kosher restaurants on 41st Street.
-The prepaid non-refundable SPG member exclusive rate comes out to $950.87Â after tax or $475.34Â per night.
-The refundable preferred rate comes out to $1,023.72 after tax or $511.86 per night.
-The refundable Starpoint rate is 20K for 2 nights. If you buy 20K Starpoints at 2.625 cents each that means you’ll have paid $525Â or $262.50Â per night.
-If you stay 5 nights the cost per night drops to 8K. If you buy 40K Starpoints for $1,050Â that means you’ll have paid $210Â per night.
-You can also redeem 11.5K points for a Junior suite or 20K points for an executive suite.
These same principles apply at Starwood hotels across the globe.

Why would someone but at this rate as opposed to buying points from a broker for considerably less?
@Josh:
If the broker doesn’t know what he’s doing and/or is dealing with a “dirty” account it can get your account permanently shut down and your points confiscated.
But yes, there are ways of going down the grey market route just like with any miles or travel that you may do, you just need to go in with your eyes wide open and weigh the savings and risks.
No, I will not be purchasing at 2.625 cpp.
@AJK:
This post isn’t intended for AJK type MS pros 🙂
WOW, I never realized how little it costs to upgrade to a suite.
Hey Dan, I joined yesterday and love your site!! So impressed by your wealth of knowledge. Question for you…..I currently have a Starwood Amex card. I read your blog post about all additional points but assume I am not eligible because I am an existing account holder. I took a vacation recently and used most of my points and am down to a balance of 5,000!!!
I will be taking a trip to Europe (probably Amsterdam, paris and Barcelona) from May 26-June 7 and would love to book some “free Starwood hotels”. Any tips on how I could build my balance asap??
Thanks again and looking forward to your blog posts and tweets!! Thanks, Barbara
Is it possible to transfer amex gold points to Starwood?
@@Yehuda:
Junior suites are priced very close to regular rooms.
Suites cost double.
@Barbara:
Thanks!
Do you have a Starwood business AMEX yet?
You can get 40K points for getting one and spending $5K on it within 3 months:

Do you have any Chase cards?
@Avi:
Yes, but at a lousy 3:1 ratio.
20K Starpoints for $525?
OK, maybe that’s cheaper than paying the published rates at some SPG hotels but it’s still kind of nuts.
I guarantee you that, at least 95% of the time, I could get you a better hotel deal for the $525 by just buying a comparable or better hotel room somewhere else.
First time poster here – long time lurker!
Not sure if coincidence or not on your end Dan – Appreciate that the March 18-20 Shabbas conveniently coincides with Miami Music Week!!! I’m thinking this deal works out for me instead of paying premium pricing for SB during the crazy weekend?
@iahphx:
As I wrote in the post,
“There’s no reason to buy them speculatively at those rates. But it can make sense if you have a specific redemption in mind.”
@Alex:
It can definitely make sense if it saves you money.
Have we decided whether the new card with new benefits is considered a new product to get the signup bonus again??
Please share your experiences!
Dan I figured out a way to get 3-5k spg (and possibly more) per month for almost nothing and i want to ask your advice regarding it is there any way i can contact you privately so I don’t kill the deal by posting it ? Thanx so much
