Ukraine Airlines has $535.79 round-trips from JFK to Tel Aviv with 2-3 hour connections in Kiev.
Turkish Airlines has $594.59 round-trips from JFK to Tel Aviv with 2-3 hour connections in Istanbul.
Both Kiev and Istanbul airports are perfectly safe to transit in and both airlines are safe to fly. Thousands of DansDeals readers have taken flights on both airlines without issues.
Both Ukraine and Turkish normally offer 2 free checked bags. Turkish is offering 3 free bags for flights through 03/31.
Turkish is a very highly rated airline with free WiFi and an awesome Star Alliance lounge in Istanbul. They have more daily flights into Tel Aviv than any foreign carrier.
The $594 Turkish fares are available on most dates departing from JFK between January 11 and April 27 with returns through July 26. Be sure to check the connection times and if you don’t see any short connections try searching the day before or after. A Saturday stay is required with Turkish. The longest you can stay in Israel is 3 months with Turkish.
The $535 Ukraine fares are more limited if you are looking for a short connection. These seem to work the best on Orbitz. A Saturday stay is not required for Ukraine.
Ukraine JFK-Tel Aviv outbound dates with short connections:
February 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 28
March 2, 6, 16
Ukraine Tel Aviv-JFK return dates with short connections:
February 11, 18, 25
March 8, 15, 17, 22, 28
April 5, 12, 18
If you’re willing to have a longer connection in Kiev then many more dates are available. DD commenter “Aryeh” notes that he stopped over for longer in Kiev and for $100 he had a private driver (contact info here) take him to the gravesites of the Baal Shem Tov Zt’l, Rebbe Nachman Zt’l, and R’ Levi Yitzchok Zt’l. DD commenter Yakov had the same positive experience as well.
