United is the only airline that gives expanded award availability to their credit cardholders. Officially that availability is for last seat standard award availability (which comes out of the FN, JN, or YN fare buckets for first, business, and coach awards respectively).
However it also gives availability to expanded coach saver awardĀ availability. When you have a consumer or business United Explorer, Presidential Plus, or Club card and you are logged into your account it will automatically display the expanded coach saver award availability (which comes out of the XN fare bucket).
United doesn’t charge the lowest rates for their own awards, but if you have a United credit card the availability will be much greater. To show exactly how much more space is available I took a look at the Newark-Tel Aviv route from now through January.
-United charges 42.5K miles for a one-way saver award between the US48 and Tel Aviv in coach and 70K in business class.
-Singapore can book the same award on United for 37.5K one-way in coach or 57.5K one-way in business class. Plus Singpaore has no close-in fees and only charges $20 to change an award or $30 to cancel and redeposit an award. However Singapore won’t have access to expanded award space or Plan B awards.
-ANA can book the same award on United for 65K round-trip in coach or 105K round-trip in business class. ANA doesn’t book one-way awards. ANA has no close-in fees, allows free date changes, and only charges 3,000 miles to cancel and redeposit an award. However ANA won’t have access to expanded award spaceĀ or Plan B awards.
-You can also redeem 70K United miles for business class even when there is only coach available. Read this post for how to do that.
-The Chase United Explorer cardĀ gives expanded saver and standard award space. After clicking apply nowĀ youĀ can also click to view the business Explorer card which offer 50K miles for signing up, and the Club card, which gives a full club membership, 2 free checked bags, and waives close-in booking fees.
-Read about how to use and decrypt Unitedās powerful expert mode here.
It used to be easy to view dates with nonstop saver award availability.Ā Unfortunately United killed their legacy Continental website, and with it the ability to actually see which of these dates actually have nonstop award space. Now you need to click through eevery date to see if there is nonstop saver award space on that date…

Other benefits of the United Explorer card include:
-As you have better access to saver coach awards youāll also have better ability to do Plan B awards. Plan B allows you to redeem for saver business and first class awards when thereās only saver coach available. Based on DDF reports and my own experience people have better than 95% odds of being seated in business class on a Plan B redemption. Read more about Plan B in this post. No airline besides United offers a Plan B redemption.
-The United and Chase Chase Sapphire PreferredĀ® CardĀ® Card cards are among the only cards that come with primary rental car CDW insurance. Almost every other card only has secondary coverage when you rent a car in your home country. This means that if you damage your rental vehicle you must file the claim with your own personal insurance policy first, and only if they wonāt cover the damage will the credit card cover the damage. Even additional cardholders get primary coverage when they rent.
With primary rental car CDW insurance you will not have to file anything with your own insurance company. Chase will cover the entire bill for any damage to your rental car. Just be sure to decline the rental agencyās CDW coverage.Ā This primary coverage applies in every country in the world.
-The United Explorer card gives 2 free United Club passes every year for being a cardmember.
-The United Explorer card gives a 10K mileage bonus every year in which you spend $25K.Ā That means youāll earn at least 1.4 miles per dollar spent everywhere if you spend $25K in a year. Spending $25K in a year also waives the requirement to spend $3K on United flights to get Silver status, $6K on United flights to get Gold status, and $9K on United flights to get Platinum status. You only need to fly the 25K, 50K, or 75K miles like in the good old days.
-Your miles will never expire as long as you are a United cardholder even if you donāt have any activity.
-A massive benefit for United elite members is that they can get free upgrades on coach award tickets on upgrade eligible routes if they have a United card.
Other card benefits:
-No foreign exchange fees
-Double miles on United purchases.
-Priority boarding so that youāll have space for your carry-ons.
-First checked bag is free.

I have the business explorer card. How do I know if my account recognizes that I have the card?
what happened to the ANA one way workaround?
Also I don’t see how my United CC will help the average person in coach on a XN award, you’ll have to pay 85k miles RT. that’s really expensive compared to current revenue sales or FB promo (of course the united flight is non-stop though)
I love my Explorer card for XN availability to Australia or some domestic routes, but I wouldn’t flaunt it for Israel.
Another point you should advertise is that United Charges much lower for a domestic standard seat award than the competition
@yossi:
Search for any of the dates in this post and see if it gives you saver award availability.
@High end hobo:
Not sure if it works anymore with the new chart. Have you tried?
A key benefit is with one-way nonstop flights. 42.5K is a bargain for that.
@yossi: If you hover over the mileage expiration date (on desktop) it will say if you are identified as a cardmember
If I can find a direct flight to Israel from JFK for 65,000 starwoods points via ELAL. Is that a good deal? Is that the best usage of points? I have 110,000…
@Moe:
It depends on the price of the ticket.
Those points can be sold on the grey market for a nice amount.
So end of the day what is better chase sapphire or united card?
United doesn’t show any Business class for today even i am logged in
I tried both ways logged in and not logged in and found that trips (from nyc to cle) also have a fare charge $80 when not logged it and $5.60 when logged in. Is the usally the case?
@joe:
Yup, people snapped them up already!
@sammy boy:
Do you have the Club card or elite status?
But United breaks guitars! We, at AA, just lose Dan’s bags when he flies on super cheap Business class tickets to London.
what are the odds of Plan B going through for EWR-SYD and then letting them also bring my wife along (had to book her with Aeroplan, but on the same flight)
@AA Baggage Service:
Indeed.
@Mahyar:
0%?
do i need to have a singapore account to book ?
also i cant seem to find tlv or tel aviv on the singapore website , am i missing anything
@mia flyer:
You need to call to book.
Availability will be the same as on United.com when not logged in.
@joe:
Looks like this guy got to them first š

Just approved for a targeted 50k +5k offer on the personal Explorer card. How long does it take for bonus miles to post in practice? It’s as soon as the statement cycles like other Chase cards? Also, how soon do I get the Club Passes?
I don’t understand the Singapore deal. Do they booked with United miles or some other miles. What number do you call
We are volunteers for USAID. They purchase our tickets and we are always in economy on Star Alliance. We have plenty of United miles. We are going to Beiruit in Jan. The tickets have not yet been purchased but will be soon. Can someone tell me how to get upgraded? Every trip we use miles and pay the fees to upgrade and it is so rare to get the upgrade. We hope we are doing something wrong and some one can help guide us. Our last trip to Cairo was booked through Luftansa and they would not allow us to use our United miles to upgrade. We dearly want to make these long trips in Business

Does this apply to the Presidential Plus card? Spend 3k or 6k & you get the straight mileage?
