Since USAirways joined the OneWorld alliance there have been some lots of new flight bargains using Avios, including 30K flight to Israel with no fuel surcharges.
Unfortunately effective today British Airways has started collecting fuel surcharges for USAirways flights that begin or end outside of the Western Hemisphere. That’s the same policy that applies to AA flights.
A round-trip from Philadelphia to Israel in coach will now cost 60,000 Avios plus $692, effectively making Avios worthless for tickets to Israel. Business class will now cost 120,000 Avios plus $928.
Similar fuel surcharges will also apply to European cities. For example a round-trip flight from Philadelphia to Paris will now cost 40K Avios plus $648 in coach or 80K Avios plus $1,044 in business.
The fuel surcharge only shows up after selecting flights and continuing on to the booking page.
What’s left for avoiding fuel surcharges with Avios?
Luckily a lot still remains. Nothing like a program like United where you will never ever pay a fuel surcharge, but then again an Avios flight can require far fewer miles than United.
-American and USAirways flights within the western hemisphere remain a bargain, starting at just 4,500 Avios for a free flight with no fuel surcharges.
-Air Berlin flights still have no fuel surcharges systemwide and remain the cheapest way to get to Israel. They have flights to Israel from Berlin and Dusseldorf for 10K Avios and flights to several US cities from 20K Avios.
-Niki flights have no fuel surcharges systemwide. They fly from Israel to Vienna for 10K Avios.
-Aer Lingus flights have no fuel surcharges systemwide. A flight from Boston to Ireland is just 12,500 Avios. These flights can only be booked over the phone.
-Alaska flights have no fuel surcharges systemwide with flight starting at just 4,500 Avios. These flights can only be booked over the phone.
-LAN flights have no fuel surcharges systemwide. Many of their flights can only be booked over the phone.
-Flights within Australia, Europe, Japan, and many other countries and regions have little to no fuel surcharges.

we all knew this was coming. so sad, the end of an era…
its a sad day.
Like i always said . When things go well enjoy it till it dies . . In this market we see it daily …….. Lets start using american airlines miles for phl tlv
@Hamburg:
Yup, but that’s 90K instead of 60K.
Still better than paying those fuel surcharges though.
@JimJam:
What Era. Give me a break, US Airways only joined One World a few months ago
Why is there a “fuel surcharge” on US flights when US doesn’t charge one using its own miles? Does BA pass the money onto US or does it pocket it?
@Al:
They pocket it.
What’s the next bad news for the mileage awards ?
Thank god I booked me tlv – Phl flight for July 24th already last week b4 these new rules came in!!
Just tried booking a flight to montreal and its 4500 points plus $89. Am I doing something wrong? when did things change.
@Moishe:
Just looked up LGA-YUL on 07/09.
It’s 4,500 Avios plus $2.50.
Looks like if I book one way tickets its $2.50, round trip is $55.
@Moishe:
Those are Canadian imposed taxes for flights leaving Canada, not fuel surcharges.
Always been that way.
Thanks Dan
how do I book a NYC – TLV flight with avios using air berlin ?
Hi Dan,
I have a United cc through Chase it says Mileage Plus Club on the card. What is this card called I see you refer to many names- like Sapphire, ink, bold, business etc. What you wrote abt BA does that apply to the cc that I have for Chase/United? I wanted to fly to Trinidad but flights were around 40k points each way, with the avios that you talk about “1.1” here they’d be 7k or 10k each way to Tobago (near Trinidad) Can you please clarify. Thank you!
Have you seen any special rates from TLV TO MIAMI now?
Not knowledgeable, you have the United credit card. With that card, you earn United miles, that can be used through United’s frequent flyer program called Mileage Plus. That card has no connection to Sapphire or Ink, besides for the fact that they are both issued by Chase. Sapphire and Ink earn UR points, which can be converted to many different mileage programs. With your United card, you earn United miles, which can only be used on United. You do not have Avios, you will only get Avios if you open a British Airways card (also offered by Chase) or convert UR points to Avios. If you just have the United card, you can not get Avios.
Thank you malka. I understand.
So what is the cheapest round trip business to Israel for 2 in Aug.?
what mileage program is the est to use?
This is mafia style highway robbery in the guise of “global warming” carbon credit nonsense. Remember how the airlines offered for you to pay $50 more for flight to “offset” the pollutants of your flight?
How do I book flights to Israel using avios on air berlin?
I need to get to israel on only BA avios? is there a way?
