Over there an LA based forum member had posted about the deal after sundown friday for us east-coasters, but before sundown friday for the west-coasters.

@chuchem: That will be difficult because the hotels are so much more expensive to Cancun. I haven’t been able to find free tickets to Cancun. What makes the Las Vegas and NYC deals so nice is that you have cheap, cheap hotels and hostels at just $20/night so you don’t use up much of your $300 in the package and can use the $300 for airfare and tickets to city events, etc.

@Steve, daniela: You can fly from anywhere (there are folks coming from Europe, for instance) to NYC, Las Vegas, or Cancun. The destination is all that matters.

@Chana: The key is to purchase your trip in multiple transactions (using a different CC and email each time). The first time, get your flight and the cheapest hotel for a single night. The second time, do the cheapest flight you can find (BOS-NYC or LAX-LAS) and get the nicest hotel you can find that’s within your budget. If you’re really ambitious, the third time around you can get Broadway tickets, helicopter tours, etc.

@Bentzi: You don’t need to use the hotels. Many of us don’t want to stay at the cheap flea-bitten hostels in NYC anyway. The key to this is finding cheap, throwaway flights and hotels as I said to Chana.

I don’t see any specification in Dan’s announcement that this is only for travel originating in Canada.

The rules of the voucher (read here: http://www.expedia.ca/daily/voucher/save300.html) clearly state that travel must originate in Canada. Therefore, I would not count on Expedia refunding any money for travel originating outside of Canada.

For anyone afraid of being charged fully in the long run, book the tickets on a JetBlue flight. My total cost was not CAD308.41-CAD300.00=C8.41, rather straight up CAD8.41. JetBlue only charges the difference between the voucher and the package price, not the actual package price and then processing a refund of CAD300.00, so the most you stand to lose is very little, or nothing at all.

Clearly says in their fine print that transaction/travel from Canada, but does that mean purchasing on their website counts as the transaction originating? Also, Expedia changed their flight terms earlier day as there were no specifications when deal went live at 3 EST yesterday.

So if you booked a NYC hotel but do not show up on the Boston-NYC JetBlue flight, you are essentially canceling part of the package, and you may get charged the $300…..

As my total expedia charge was under 300 and therefor zero dollars, my chase bank is still not showing any charges…an hour later (chase online usually posts charges in realtime in my experience). Guys, it looks like the jetblue rumor has panned out. I booked two separate trips, one for 94 dollars on my chase visa and one for 0 on my citicard, and both are with jetblue. Guess what shows on my CC: 94 and 0 😀

Also, for all the people freaking out and bugging Dan: Everyone please relax! Worse comes to worse this gets disputed with your credit card, as your itinerary shows the supposedly correct charge. Worse comes to worse they cancel the trip; they are not going to charge you beyond what you authorized, and if they do then the next big thread here will be us all putting together a class action law suit! 😀

I’m not worried about the concern of not originating from Canada…but for those of us who haphazardly booked packages solely for the hotel stays, intending to ditch the flights: Perhaps it’s better to just cancel the package? As Hocker pointed out, the terms are pretty clear and I’m not sure that will be as simple to dispute. Thoughts?

@Hocker: a “no show” is not a cancellation. Change dates 4 bdway show and make sure hotel is only 1night mid-week.
The way to really take advantage(besides using the expedia “add on’s” like tours & tkts) is to use it to fly ANYWHERE in the USA via nyc or las. Simply book multiple trips on 2 carriers so if u miss a leg it won’t qualify as a “no-show”-therefore canceling whole trip (the F.T summary on this point about there being collaboration between competing airlines is factually incorrect).
Those chasing AA exp can get to rdu from nyc and mileage-run until Dec 31st to las with deqm!

Deal is to good to be true.. I am expecting an apology letter from expedia one of these days.

2) No showing could be a problem i.e. considered a cancellation.

3) It does say that travel needs to originate for Canada.

There is no way expedia will be paying out all these $300 coupons when it clearly states it needs to originate out of Canada.
(unless they got some major stimulus from Obama that we don’t know about!

They’re not going to be able to charge money and not give a refund, as they sent out email confirmations with $0 prices.
Besides they’ll never win a credit card dispute against email conformations like that.
And people are reporting already seeing the expedia refunds coming through.

I booked a vaca on chanukah for 97 cents!!! however im stuck now because i told my husband to book his and he by mistake forgot to apply code and was charged 300.97 cents! not sure if it can be refunded and for sure cant use voucher anymore!! anyone going to be there chanukah? not into traveling myself!

Are you sure he forgot to apply the code? Does his email conformation have the discount in it because it is normal to be charged and then refunded the $300.

Also you should be able to call expedia to refund any ticket within 24 hours.

Why should the credit card company reimburse you for not following the terms and conditions. All of you are stupid for trying something under the assumption that if I break the rules its okay because my CC company will pay me back.

YES IM SURE HE FORGOT! mine said 97 cents and his said 300.97! he forgot! i spoke to expedia and they said that they were having system errors- i told them we tried and the coupon wouldnt go through. they said they would give 100 towards our expedia account for another trip, but i didnt want that. they said they will try to refund it by calling airlines but they couldnt successfully do that. i need to call back later when the airlines are open in vancouver so they can help me. hopefully they can refund it! if not they said they will refund hotel and give me a credit voucher for delta for $240 🙁

hi was wondering if i need to change the dates on my ticket can i call the airline directly in this case delta. and have them change the dates without having to wait on hold for 2 hours with expedia its within 24 of booking if that makes a difference

My experience has been that you will not be able to make changes to flights through the airline directly since your ticket was purchased through a second party. You’ll have to make changes through expedia who will charge you a change fee in addition to any change fee the airline charges and any difference in price of the new ticket. You could try calling and arguing but I’ve been there before and have been unsuccessful. Good luck!

update you cannot there is a 150 dollar change fee they also would not let me cancel since i made the res thru expedia

For all of those out there that are not planning on taking the flight portion of the itinerary. Up until the day of departure, Expedia has control of the ticket and therefore the airline cannot modify or cancel. If you call the airline on the day of, they have full control of the ticket and the airline can issue you a credit for the flight, less the cancellation fee. 🙂
